It saved my life. But before I underwent the stem cell transplant as part of my acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treatment, I had seriously considered backing out.

My AML treatment plan

A stem cell transplant was not what I’d been hoping for. I’d hoped that the clinical trial I was on as part of my AML treatment would put me in remission.

However, that was not to be. So my leukemia doctor at MD Anderson sent me to the stem cell unit for a transplant.

When I landed at the airport in Houston to go meet with a stem cell doctor at MD Anderson, I met a man and told him why I was there. Like many I met on my AML journey, he encouraged me and said I would be in his prayers.

Afterwards, I went to MD Anderson for final testing and an appointment with Chitra Hosing, M.D., professor in Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy. I told her my concerns about the transplant, and she reassured me. She never pressed me to go forward, but she talked about windows of opportunity. I was in remission, albeit incomplete, and remission was the time for a stem cell transplant. I left her office ready to move forward.

Second thoughts about my stem cell transplant

The next Saturday, my daughter-in-law, Ali, and I got in the car to drive to the hospital for my transplant.

About halfway there I got a call from the sister of a friend I had made at the transfusion unit. Her brother, Jesus, was a leukemia patient, like me. I had been jealous of him because he’d gotten his treatment and gone home to El Paso to recover. I had really thought that is what I would be doing, too.

Jesus’ sister told me that he died from chemo poisoning. The call could not have come at a worse time. I could no longer think about myself. This woman had just lost her brother. He’d left behind two young children and a wife.

I told her I was sorry, and as soon as I hung up, I related what had happened to Ali.

I wondered if this might be a sign. He’d died of chemo poisoning. I was about to undergo massive chemo to administer my stem cell transplant. Was I going to meet the same fate? I told Ali my concerns.

Ali dropped me off in front of the hospital. I told her not to come in because my 5-month-old grandson was asleep in the car. I then told her I would call her if I changed my mind.

Finding my resolve

I stood in front of the hospital doors not knowing what to do. A call home to my wife relieved some of my fears, but I was still apprehensive.

As I thought about it, it became clear to me that going home was not an option. I had been home for visits. Every other day was spent at the transfusion unit of the local hospital. My platelet count hovered between 10 and 15 unless I got a transfusion, and my red cell count was not much better. I turned and walked through doors with resolve.

I would check in. I would face this bravely, heeding the words of my oldest brother, my stem cell donor, who told me how I acted would impact my children.

In the morning, I asked my doctor about chemo poisoning. He just chuckled and reassured me. Two of my children came to see me that day, and I held my tears in check as I assured them that Dad was going to be okay.

And three years later, I am. I know with some certainty that I would not be here had I walked away from this life saving transplant. The stranger I had met at the airport will never know that his prayers, and the prayers of many others, for me were answered.

Together with colleagues from Halle, he has now succeeded in extending this period by a factor of about a billion to several minutes. “This does not only open up the possibility of designing more compact computer memories, but could also be the basis for the setup of quantum computers,” Wulfhekel says. Copper imbalances have been associated with a number of pathological conditions, including cancer. Scientists have found that copper in drinking water — given at the maximum levels permitted in public water supplies — accelerated the growth of tumors in mice. The crystals were about 10,000 times as large as the largest crystals from only four years ago. Nov. 4, 2013 — For the first time in a large study sample, the decline in brain function in normal aging is conclusively shown to be influenced by genes, say researchers from the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio and Yale University.”Identification of genes associated with brain aging should improve our understanding of the biological processes that govern normal age-related decline,” said John Blangero, Ph.D., a Texas Biomed geneticist and the senior author of the paper. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is published in the November 4, 2013 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. David Glahn, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, is the first author on the paper.In large pedigrees including 1,129 people aged 18 to 83, the scientists documented profound aging effects from young adulthood to old age, on neurocognitive ability and brain white matter measures. White matter actively affects how the brain learns and functions. Genetic material shared amongst biological relatives appears to predict the observed changes in brain function with age.Participants were enrolled in the Genetics of Brain Structure and Function Study and drawn from large Mexican Americans families in San Antonio. Brain imaging studies were conducted at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Research Imaging Institute directed by Peter Fox, M.D.”The use of large human pedigrees provides a powerful resource for measuring how genetic factors change with age,” Blangero said.By applying a sophisticated analysis, the scientists demonstrated a heritable basis for neurocognitive deterioration with age that could be attributed to genetic factors. Similarly, decreasing white matter integrity with age was influenced by genes., The investigators further demonstrated that different sets of genes are responsible for these two biological aging processes.”A key advantage of this study is that we specifically focused on large extended families and so we were able to disentangle genetic from non-genetic influences on the aging process,” said Glahn.

This is indicated in a new study at the University of Helsinki.The study focused on 24 women during the final trimester of their pregnancies. Half of the women played the melody of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to their fetuses five days a week for the final stages of their pregnancies. The brains of the babies who heard the melody in utero reacted more strongly to the familiar melody both immediately and four months after birth when compared with the control group. These results show that fetuses can recognise and remember sounds from the outside world.This is significant for the early rehabilitation, since rehabilitation aims at long-term changes in the brain.”Even though our earlier research indicated that fetuses could learn minor details of speech, we did not know how long they could retain the information. These results show that babies are capable of learning at a very young age, and that the effects of the learning remain apparent in the brain for a long time,” expounds Eino Partanen, who is currently finishing his dissertation at the Cognitive Brain Research Unit.”This is the first study to track how long fetal memories remain in the brain. The results are significant, as studying the responses in the brain let us focus on the foundations of fetal memory. The early mechanisms of memory are currently unknown,” points out Dr Minna Huotilainen, principal investigator.The researchers believe that song and speech are most beneficial for the fetus in terms of speech development. Oct. 23, 2013 — A paper in a recent issue of the journal Science [18 October] pits the front-running ideas about the growth of supermassive black holes against observational data — a limit on the strength of gravitational waves from pairs of black holes, obtained with CSIRO’s 64-m Parkes radio telescope in eastern Australia.The study was jointly led by Dr Ryan Shannon, a Postdoctoral Fellow with CSIRO, and Mr Vikram Ravi, a PhD student co-supervised by the University of Melbourne (Australia) and CSIRO.”For the first time, we’ve used information about gravitational waves as a tool in astrophysics,” said Dr Shannon.”It’s a powerful new tool. These black holes are very hard to observe directly, so this is a new chapter in astronomy.””One model for black-hole growth has failed our test and we’re painting the others into a corner. They may not break, but they’ll have to bend,” said Mr Ravi.Einstein predicted gravitational waves — ripples in space-time, generated by bodies changing speed or direction. Bodies, for instance, such as pairs of black holes orbiting each other.When galaxies merge, their resident central black holes are doomed to meet. They first waltz together then enter a desperate embrace and merge.”Theorists predict that towards the end of this dance they’re growling out gravitational waves at a frequency we’re set up to detect,” Dr Shannon said.Played out again and again across the Universe, such encounters create a background of gravitational waves, like the noise from a restless crowd.Astronomers have been searching for gravitational waves with the Parkes radio telescope and a set of 20 small, spinning stars called pulsars.Pulsars act as extremely precise clocks in space. We measure when their pulses arrive on Earth to within a tenth of a microsecond.As gravitational waves roll through an area of space-time, they temporarily swell or shrink the distances between objects in that region. “That can alter the arrival time of the pulses on Earth,” said Dr Michael Keith of the University of Manchester in the UK.The Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) project and an earlier collaboration between CSIRO and Swinburne University together provide nearly 20 years’ worth of timing data.”We haven’t yet detected gravitational waves outright, but we’re now into the right ballpark to do so,” said the project leader, CSIRO’s Dr George Hobbs.Combining pulsar-timing data from Parkes with that from other telescopes in Europe and the USA — a total of about 50 pulsars — should give us the accuracy to detect gravitational waves “within ten years,” he said.Meanwhile, the PPTA results are showing us how low the background rate of gravitational waves is.The strength of the gravitational wave background depends on how often supermassive black holes spiral together and merge, how massive they are, and how far away they are. So if the background is low, that puts a limit on one or more of those factors.Armed with the PPTA data, the researchers tested four models of black-hole growth. They effectively ruled out black holes gaining mass only through mergers, but the other three models “are still in the game,” said Dr Sarah Burke-Spolaor of California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

DIY Fairy Costume for Boys

Ryan first fell in love with pirates because of that TV show “Jake and the Neverland Pirates.” So of course I had to show him Peter Pan, one of our childhood favorites. And then? He became obsessed with Tinkerbell… and we saw the Tinkerbell movies… and he loves allllll the fairies. One day we got some pixie dust (from far far away!) and the poor kid was so disappointed when it didn’t make things fly!

Anyway, with Halloween coming up I had been asking him what he wanted to be…. a fairy, OF COURSE! He told me all about it–he wanted pixie dust and wings, but we were running out of pixie dust so only he could fly with it, Rebecca (his sister) and I would have to stay “grounded.” I wasn’t too surprised when I searched the internet and couldn’t find a single fairy costume for boys. I like making my kids’ costumes anyway, so I searched for ideas and got crafty. I found ONE great photo of a boy in a fairy costume and I used ideas from that and from the boy fairy in Tinkerbell.

It was actually very easy. First I hit up Salvation Army and I found:

• a long-sleeve green shirt (bought in one size larger than usual so it’d be long enough to cut the bottom and sleeve-ends jagged)


• brown leggings (from the girls section, bought one size larger)


• brown button down (I could only find a polo, but the idea is to cut it short anyway so it worked)


• brown hat (the one I found actually had a flower stitched on one side, but I just planned on covering it with leaves)


• tan-colored belt (bought in the men’s section–I cut off the buckle ends and tied it around the waist)


• matching tan-colored men’s socks (to put over the shoes and slouch around the ankles)

I cut the bottom of the green shirt jagged, as well as the ends of the sleeves. I cut the brown short-sleeve polo jagged just above the waist-line. And I did cut the toes off the tan socks, but in hindsight probably should have left them.

Next stop: Jo-Ann Fabrics. I was super lucky to find the brown feathered wings here. I love them! I had actually already bought a pair for him and they were white and sparkly, but I thought these would match the whole costume much better AND they were 70% off (one week before Halloween). The arm straps are a little big on Ryan so I just used safety pins to shorten them.

I bought a bag of loose leaves and hot glued them randomly onto the costume. And finally, I bought some white glitter and little drawstring mesh bags for pixie dust! Turns out the glitter was too fine and the mesh too large to be contained in those bags, but I tied the bag to his belt anyway–you can kind of see it in the photo above, it’s gold and near his hands.

Last stop: Walmart, only because I forgot this piece at the fabric store, haha. I got a 23-cent piece of brown felt that I cut into a strip, rolled, and hot glued onto the top of his hat to make an acorn hat!

Oct. 24, 2013 — An international research consortium led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the University of Chicago has answered several questions about the genetic background of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette syndrome (TS), providing the first direct confirmation that both are highly heritable and also revealing major differences between the underlying genetic makeup of the disorders. Their report is being published in the October issue of the open-access journal PLOS Genetics.”Both TS and OCD appear to have a genetic architecture of many different genes — perhaps hundreds in each person — acting in concert to cause disease,” says Jeremiah Scharf, MD, PhD, of the Psychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Genetics Unit in the MGH Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology, senior corresponding author of the report. “By directly comparing and contrasting both disorders, we found that OCD heritability appears to be concentrated in particular chromosomes — particularly chromosome 15 — while TS heritability is spread across many different chromosomes.”An anxiety disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions that disrupt the lives of patients, OCD is the fourth most common psychiatric illness. TS is a chronic disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics that usually begins in childhood and is often accompanied by conditions like OCD or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Both conditions have been considered to be heritable, since they are known to often recur in close relatives of affected individuals, but identifying specific genes that confer risk has been challenging.Two reports published last year in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, with leadership from Scharf and several co-authors of the current study, described genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of thousands of affected individuals and controls. While those studies identified several gene variants that appeared to increase the risk of each disorder, none of the associations were strong enough to meet the strict standards of genome-wide significance. Since the GWAS approach is designed to identify relatively common gene variants and it has been proposed that OCD and TS might be influenced by a number of rare variants, the research team adopted a different method. Called genome-wide complex trait analysis (GCTA), the approach allows simultaneous comparision of genetic variation across the entire genome, rather than the GWAS method of testing sites one at a time, as well as estimating the proportion of disease heritability caused by rare and common variants.”Trying to find a single causative gene for diseases with a complex genetic background is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack,” says Lea Davis, PhD, of the section of Genetic Medicine at the University of Chicago, co-corresponding author of the PLOS Genetics report. “With this approach, we aren’t looking for individual genes. …
