Previous explanations suggested that the stars that form the bulge are in banana-like orbits, but a new article suggests that the stars probably move in peanut-shell or figure of eight-shaped orbits instead.

Nov. 27, 2013 — Two months ago astronomers created a new 3D map of stars at the centre of our Galaxy (the Milky Way), showing more clearly than ever the bulge at its core. Previous explanations suggested that the stars that form the bulge are in banana-like orbits, but a paper published this week in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society suggests that the stars probably move in peanut-shell or figure of eight-shaped orbits instead.The difference is important; astronomers develop theories of star motions to not only understand how the stars in our galaxy are moving today but also how our galaxy formed and evolves. The Milky Way is shaped like a spiral, with a region of stars at the centre known as the “bar,” because of its shape. In the middle of this region, there is a “bulge” that expands out vertically.In the new work Alice Quillen, professor of astronomy at the University of Rochester, and her collaborators created a mathematical model of what might be happening at the centre of the Milky Way. Unlike the Solar System where most of the gravitational pull comes from the Sun and is simple to model, it is much harder to describe the gravitational field near the centre of the Galaxy, where millions of stars, vast clouds of dust, and even dark matter swirl about. In this case, Quillen and her colleagues considered the forces acting on the stars in or near the bulge.As the stars go round in their orbits, they also move above or below the plane of the bar. When stars cross the plane they get a little push, like a child on a swing. At the resonance point, which is a point a certain distance from the centre of the bar, the timing of the pushes on the stars is such that this effect is strong enough to make the stars at this point move up higher above the plane. (It is like when a child on the swing has been pushed a little every time and eventually is swinging higher.) These stars are pushed out from the edge of the bulge.The resonance at this point means that stars undergo two vertical oscillations for every orbital period. …

Nov. 21, 2013 — Using a new method to catch elusive “jumping genes” in the act, researchers have found two human proteins that are used by one type of DNA to replicate itself and move from place to place. The discovery, described in the Nov. 21 issue of Cell, breaks new ground, they say, in understanding the arms race between a jumping gene driven to colonize new areas of the human genome and cells working to limit the risk posed by such volatile bits of DNA.Jumping genes, more formally known as transposons or transposable elements, are DNA segments with the blueprints for proteins that help to either copy the segment or remove it, then insert it into a new place in the genome. Human genomes are littered with the remnants of ancient jumping genes, but because cells have an interest in limiting such trespasses, they have evolved ways to regulate them. Most jumping genes have mutated and can no longer move, but these “rusting hulks” are still passed down from generation to generation.One exception is a jumping gene called L1, which has been so successful that copies of it make up about 20 percent of human DNA. While many of these copies are now mutated and dormant, others are still active and thus the subject of much interest from geneticists.”Human cells have evolved ways of limiting jumping genes’ activity, since the more frequently they move, the more likely they are to disrupt an important gene and cause serious damage,” says Lixin Dai, Ph.D., a postdoctoral associate at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences, who led the study. To find out more about how cells control L1 and what tricks the jumping gene uses to get around these defenses, Dai and others in the laboratory of Jef Boeke, Ph.D., first induced lab-grown human cells to make large amounts of the proteins for which L1 contains the blueprints. As expected, the two types of L1 protein joined with human proteins and genetic material called RNA to form so-called ribonucleoprotein particle complexes, which L1 uses to “jump.”To find out which human proteins interact with ribonucleoproteins — and are therefore likely to have a role in either tamping down its activity or helping it along — Boeke’s team collaborated with researchers at The Rockefeller University who had developed a technique for fast-freezing yeast with liquid nitrogen, then grinding it up for analysis with steel balls and very rapidly pulling out the ribonucleoproteins with tiny magnetic particles. “It’s a good way of preserving the interactions,” Dai says.Adapting this powerful technique to human cells, the team found 37 proteins that appear to interact with the ribonucleoprotein, and they selected two for further analysis. …

Nov. 20, 2013 — A Florida State University scientist has uncovered what may be the first recognized example of ancient Martian crust.The work of Munir Humayun — a professor in FSU’s Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science and a researcher at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) — is based on an analysis of a 4.4 billion-year-old Martian meteorite that was unearthed by Bedouin tribesmen in the Sahara desert. The rock (NWA 7533) may be the first recognized sample of ancient Martian crust and holds a wealth of information about the origin and age of the Red Planet’s crust.Humayun’s groundbreaking discoveries about the crust and what it reveals about the Red Planet’s origins will be published in the journal Nature.In order to detect minute amounts of chemicals in this meteorite, Humayun and his collaborators performed complex analysis on the meteorite using an array of highly sophisticated mass spectrometers in the MagLab’s geochemistry department. High concentrations of trace metals such as iridium, an element that indicates meteoritic bombardment, showed that this meteorite came from the elusive cratered area of Mars’ southern highlands.”This cratered terrain has been long thought to hold the keys to Mars’ birth and early childhood,” Humayun said.While craters cover more than half of Mars, this is the first meteoric sample to come from this area and the first time researchers are able to understand Mars’ early crustal growth.Using the chemical information found in pieces of soil contained in the meteorite, the researchers were able to calculate the thickness of Mars’ crust. Their calculation aligned with estimates from independent spacecraft measurements and confirms that Mars did not experience a giant impact that melted the entire planet in its early history.Using a powerful microprobe at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, the team dated special crystals within the meteorite — called zircons — at an astounding 4.4 billion years old.”This date is about 100 million years after the first dust condensed in the solar system,” Humayun said. “We now know that Mars had a crust within the first 100 million years of the start of planet building, and that Mars’ crust formed concurrently with the oldest crusts on Earth and the Moon.”Humayun and his collaborators hypothesize that these trailblazing discoveries are just the tip of the iceberg of what continued research on this unique meteorite will uncover. Nov. 20, 2013 — Results from a DNA study of a young boy’s skeletal remains believed to be 24,000 years old could turn the archaeological world upside down — it’s been demonstrated that nearly 30 percent of modern Native American’s ancestry came from this youngster’s gene pool, suggesting First Americans came directly from Siberia, according to a research team that includes a Texas A&M University professor.Kelly Graf, assistant professor in the Center for the Study of First Americans and Department of Anthropology at Texas A&M, is part of an international team spearheaded by Eske Willerslev and Maanasa Raghaven from the Centre for GeoGenetics at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark and additional researchers from Sweden, Russia, United Kingdom, University of Chicago and University of California-Berkeley. Their work, funded by the Danish National Science Foundation, Lundbeck Foundation, and the National Science Foundation, is published in the current issue of Nature magazine.Graf and Willerslev conceived the project and traveled to the Hermitage State Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, where the remains are now housed to collect samples for ancient DNA. The skeleton was first discovered in the late 1920s near the village of Mal’ta in south-central Siberia, and since then it has been referred to as “the Mal’ta child” because until this DNA study the biological sex of the skeleton was unknown.”Now we can say with confidence that this individual was a male” says Graf.Graf helped extract DNA material from the boy’s upper arm and “the results surprised all of us quite a bit,” she explains.”It shows he had close genetic ties to today’s Native Americans and some western Eurasians, specifically some groups living in central Asia, South Asia, and Europe. Also, he shared close genetic ties with other Ice-Age western Eurasians living in European Russia, Czech Republic and even Germany. We think these Ice-Age people were quite mobile and capable of maintaining a far-reaching gene pool that extended from central Siberia all the way west to central Europe.”Another significant result of the study is that the Mal’ta boy’s people were also ancestors of Native Americans, explaining why some early Native American skeletons such as Kennewick Man were interpreted to have some European traits.”Our study proves that Native Americans ancestors migrated to the Americas from Siberia and not directly from Europe as some have recently suggested,” Graf explains.The DNA work performed on the boy is the oldest complete genome of a human sequenced so far, the study shows. Also found near the boy’s remains were flint tools, a beaded necklace and what appears to be pendant-like items, all apparently placed in the burial as grave goods.The discovery raises new questions about the timing of human entry in Alaska and ultimately North America, a topic hotly debated in First Americans studies.”Though our results cannot speak directly to this debate, they do indicate Native American ancestors could have been in Beringia — extreme northeastern Russia and Alaska — any time after 24,000 years ago and therefore could have colonized Alaska and the Americas much earlier than 14,500 years ago, the age suggested by the archaeological record.””What we need to do is continue searching for earlier sites and additional clues to piece together this very big puzzle.”

Together with colleagues from Halle, he has now succeeded in extending this period by a factor of about a billion to several minutes. “This does not only open up the possibility of designing more compact computer memories, but could also be the basis for the setup of quantum computers,” Wulfhekel says. Quantum computers are based on quantum physics properties of atomic systems. In theory at least, their speed might exceed that of classical computers by several factors.In their experiment, the researchers placed a single holmium atom onto a platinum substrate. DiNardo.jpg At MD Anderson, we’re constantly looking for innovative new

ways to provide the best possible cancer treatment options for our patients as

we work toward our mission of Making Cancer History®. To help with this, we’ve

enlisted a cognitive computing system powered by IBM Watson.


This technology, known as Oncology Expert Advisor™ (OEA),

will soon be used by our doctors and researchers as part of our Moon Shots Program, starting

with our fight against leukemia.

Ultimately, we hope to use the OEA in all of our clinics to help our patients

regardless of their cancer type.


By pulling together and analyzing vast amounts of

information from patient and research databases, the OEA is expected to help our

care teams identify and fine-tune the best possible cancer

treatments
for our patients, while also alerting them to problems that arise

during a patient’s care. The OEA is also expected to help our researchers

advance new discoveries in our fight against cancer.


We recently spoke with Courtney DiNardo, M.D., assistant

professor in Leukemia, who’s been testing the OEA before it debuts in our leukemia

clinic. Here’s what she had to say.


What are the benefits

of using the OEA to organize and collect data about

our patients?
The OEA can extract patient information from various data sources and

synthesize all available medical records into a clear, concise and accurate

synopsis. It can analyze clinical information, medical history, as well as

leukemia-related information, such as specific genetic and molecular features,

and look at all available information in the context of published

evidence-based guidelines and available clinical

trials
.


The OEA also allows us to look at changes in a patient’s

condition over time, enabling us to learn a wealth of information within

seconds and answer complex medical questions with speed, accuracy and

confidence. This has an enormous potential to help us make the best cancer

treatment decisions for our patients and the best research decisions that can

help us make progress in our fight against cancer.


What does the use of

the OEA mean for the future of personalized medicine?


The OEA enables us to provide better, more personalized care through accurate

and evidence-based treatment recommendations based upon a specific patient’s

characteristics as well as his or her leukemia-specific characteristics.


The OEA also can help doctors identify the best cancer

treatment for a particular patient by identifying both the standard treatment options

and clinical trials for which a patient is eligible.


Additionally, by following a patient over time along with

the physician, the OEA helps minimize potential adverse events and optimize

management of the patient’s care at all times.


How – and how soon – will

the OEA change cancer treatment here at MD Anderson?
The OEA is currently in the testing and evaluation stage in MD Anderson’s Department

of Leukemia
. The actual timeline of when this will be available to our

leukemia patients and then expanded to patients with other types of cancer is

not currently known.


We’re hoping that soon, various medical providers, including

physicians, mid-level providers and research teams, will soon be able to use it

to assimilate complex and ever-expanding genomic data and published scientific research.

The OEA then integrates this information with patient data to provide insights

and helps us select the best cancer treatment for each and every patient.


What does the OEA

mean for cancer care beyond MD Anderson?
The OEA has the potential to “democratize” cancer care, meaning that any physician

with Internet access will be able to access the latest scientific knowledge and

MD Anderson’s expertise.


For physicians who aren’t leukemia experts, the OEA can

function as an expert second opinion, allowing them to access the same

knowledge and information we have here. This will enable doctors even in remote

areas to provide the highest standard of care to patients who can’t travel to

Houston for their cancer treatment.


As a doctor, what do

you consider the OEA’s greatest potential?


The ability to integrate patient level data such as additional medical history,

medications, alongside cancer genomics, as well as cancer therapy received and

responses, side

effects
, etc., will provide an unparalleled research platform that can be

used to generate questions, explore hypotheses and provide answers to critical

research questions.


For example, the OEA will also enable us to analyze why

certain patients respond to certain cancer treatments and why particular patients

experience certain side effects, using a research platform that is currently not

available. This gives us the potential to really learn from the vast amount of

information we currently have, and use it to advance cancer research and to benefit

each individual patient.


I’m excited about the possibilities for accelerating new

research and providing the most effective treatments and cures for our patients.

Nov. 7, 2013 — In a new study, Dartmouth researchers rule out a controversial theory that the accelerating expansion of the universe is an illusion.While the findings don’t explain the cosmic speed-up, they eliminate one provocative possibility that our planet, solar system and galaxy are at the center of the universe and that there is no dark energy. The findings appear in the journal Physical Review D.The 2011 Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. One leading idea to explain the acceleration is a new, mysterious substance called dark energy, which is thought to make up nearly three-fourths of the energy of the universe. But another alternative is that Earth, our solar system and Milky Way galaxy are at the center of the universe. That theory violates the standard assumption that the universe has no center, but if true, then cosmic acceleration could be explained without dark energy or any new laws of physics.But Dartmouth researchers found that this model can’t hold up to other observational tests. The sky glows with light left over from the Big Bang, also known as the Cosmic Microwave Background, so they calculated how that glow would be affected. Their findings show that the model’s prediction is completely contrary to the glow that has been measured.”Essentially, we held a mirror up to the universe and asked if the reflection was special,” says Robert Caldwell, a professor of physics and astronomy who co-wrote the article with undergraduate physics major Nina Maksimova. “The reflection shows that we do not appear to live in a special location, and decisively excludes this explanation for the universe’s accelerating expansion. It would be a great relief to be able to understand a basic problem of cosmology within the known laws of physics, but our research is an important step in explaining the physics responsible for the cosmic acceleration.”

Study: Gardening and DIY projects can boost heart health




Gardening and simple tasks around the house can lead to a longer life, according to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Researchers from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences found that adults over the age of 60 who engaged in tasks such as gardening, home maintenance or automotive repair have better overall cardiovascular health.


According to the study's lead investigator, Elin Ekblom-Bak, the key to developing and maintaining good heart health is staying on your feet and avoiding sitting as much as possible.


"Sitting is mainly replacing time you spend in daily activity and vice versa," Ekblom-Bak said in a press release. "The results of this study showed that activities of daily life are as important as regular intentional exercise for older adults for cardiovascular health and longevity."


In the analysis, 3,800 men and women born in 1937 or 1938 were asked about their lifestyle, which included information about their diet and how physically active they were. The researchers also took blood samples to measure sugar and fat levels. Over the course of the 12-year trial, 476 participants either died from or experienced a heart attack or stoke. Those in the group who said that they moved regularly reduced their risk of being affected by these conditions by 30 percent.


Ekblom-Bak also noted in the press release that physicians should encourage their older patients to engage in these basic tasks, especially if they are no longer able to engage in vigorous exercise.

In the journal Zootaxa, they describe a rare shark, the Carolina hammerhead, that had long eluded discovery because it is outwardly indistinguishable from the common scalloped hammerhead. Through its rarity, the new species, Sphyrna gilberti, underscores the fragility of shark diversity in the face of relentless human predation.Quattro, a biology professor in USC’s College of Arts and Sciences, didn’t set out to discover a new cryptic species, let alone one found exclusively in saltwater. When he started as an assistant professor at USC in 1995, he was largely focused on fish in the freshwater rivers that flow through the state before emptying into the western Atlantic Ocean.He has wide interests that include conservation, genetic diversity and taxonomy. A driving force in his scientific curiosity is a desire to better understand evolution. Nov. 4, 2013 — For the first time in a large study sample, the decline in brain function in normal aging is conclusively shown to be influenced by genes, say researchers from the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio and Yale University.”Identification of genes associated with brain aging should improve our understanding of the biological processes that govern normal age-related decline,” said John Blangero, Ph.D., a Texas Biomed geneticist and the senior author of the paper. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is published in the November 4, 2013 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. David Glahn, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, is the first author on the paper.In large pedigrees including 1,129 people aged 18 to 83, the scientists documented profound aging effects from young adulthood to old age, on neurocognitive ability and brain white matter measures. White matter actively affects how the brain learns and functions. Similarly, decreasing white matter integrity with age was influenced by genes., The investigators further demonstrated that different sets of genes are responsible for these two biological aging processes.”A key advantage of this study is that we specifically focused on large extended families and so we were able to disentangle genetic from non-genetic influences on the aging process,” said Glahn.

Oct. 28, 2013 — n a pair of landmark studies that exploit the genetic sequencing of the “missing link” cold virus, rhinovirus C, scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have constructed a three-dimensional model of the pathogen that shows why there is no cure yet for the common cold.Writing today (Oct. 28, 2013) in the journal Virology, a team led by UW-Madison biochemistry Professor Ann Palmenberg provides a meticulous topographical model of the capsid or protein shell of a cold virus that until 2006 was unknown to science.Rhinovirus C is believed to be responsible for up to half of all childhood colds, and is a serious complicating factor for respiratory conditions such as asthma. Together with rhinoviruses A and B, the recently discovered virus is responsible for millions of illnesses yearly at an estimated annual cost of more than $40 billion in the United States alone.The work is important because it sculpts a highly detailed structural model of the virus, showing that the protein shell of the virus is distinct from those of other strains of cold viruses.“The question we sought to answer was how is it different and what can we do about it? We found it is indeed quite different,” says Palmenberg, noting that the new structure “explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinovirus.”The A and B families of cold virus, including their three-dimensional structures, have long been known to science as they can easily be grown and studied in the lab. Rhinovirus C, on the other hand, resists culturing and escaped notice entirely until 2006 when “gene chips” and advanced gene sequencing revealed the virus had long been lurking in human cells alongside the more observable A and B virus strains.The new cold virus model was built “in silico,” drawing on advanced bioinformatics and the genetic sequences of 500 rhinovirus C genomes, which provided the three-dimensional coordinates of the viral capsid.“It’s a very high-resolution model,” notes Palmenberg, whose group along with a team from the University of Maryland was the first to map the genomes for all known common cold virus strains in 2009. “We can see that it fits the data.”With a structure in hand, the likelihood that drugs can be designed to effectively thwart colds may be in the offing. Drugs that work well against the A and B strains of cold virus have been developed and advanced to clinical trials. However, their efficacy was blunted because they were built to take advantage of the surface features of the better known strains, whose structures were resolved years ago through X-ray crystallography, a well-established technique for obtaining the structures of critical molecules.Because all three cold virus strains all contribute to the common cold, drug candidates failed as the surface features that permit rhinovirus C to dock with host cells and evade the immune system were unknown and different from those of rhinovirus A and B.Based on the new structure, “we predict you’ll have to make a C-specific drug,” explains Holly A. Basta, the lead author of the study and a graduate student working with Palmenberg in the UW-Madison Institute for Molecular Virology. …
