Pills of the future: Nanoparticles

Researchers design drug-carrying nanoparticles that can be taken orally instead of being injected.

via ScienceDaily: Top Health News:

Nov. 27, 2013 — Drugs delivered by nanoparticles hold promise for targeted treatment of many diseases, including cancer. However, the particles have to be injected into patients, which has limited their usefulness so far. Now, researchers from MIT and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) have developed a new type of nanoparticle that can be delivered orally and absorbed through the digestive tract, allowing patients to simply take a pill instead of receiving injections. In a paper appearing in the Nov. 27 online edition of Science Translational Medicine, the researchers used the particles to demonstrate oral delivery of insulin in mice, but they say the particles could be used to carry any kind of drug that can be encapsulated in a nanoparticle. The new nanoparticles are coated with antibodies that act as a key to unlock receptors found on the surfaces of cells that line the intestine, allowing the nanoparticles to break through the intestinal walls and enter the bloodstream. This type of drug delivery could be especially useful in developing new treatments for conditions such as high cholesterol or arthritis. Patients with those diseases would be much more likely to take pills regularly than to make frequent visits to a doctor’s office to receive nanoparticle injections, say the researchers.”If you were a patient and you had a choice, there’s just no question: Patients would always prefer drugs they can take orally,” says Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT, a member of MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, and an author of the Science Translational Medicine paper.Lead authors of the paper are former MIT grad student Eric Pridgen and former BWH postdoc Frank Alexis, and the senior author is Omid Farokhzad, director of the Laboratory of Nanomedicine and Biomaterials at BWH. Other authors are Timothy Kuo, a gastroenterologist at BWH; Etgar Levy-Nissenbaum, a former BWH postdoc; Rohit Karnik, an MIT associate professor of mechanical engineering; and Richard Blumberg, co-director of BWH’s Biomedical Research Institute. No more injectionsSeveral types of nanoparticles carrying chemotherapy drugs or short interfering RNA, which can turn off selected genes, are now in clinical trials to treat cancer and other diseases. These particles exploit the fact that tumors and other diseased tissues are surrounded by leaky blood vessels. After the particles are intravenously injected into patients, they seep through those leaky vessels and release their payload at the tumor site. For nanoparticles to be taken orally, they need to be able to get through the intestinal lining, which is made of a layer of epithelial cells that join together to form impenetrable barriers called tight junctions.”The key challenge is how to make a nanoparticle get through this barrier of cells. …

via ScienceDaily: Living Well News:

Nov. 26, 2013 — Research has suggested that a particular gene in the brain’s reward system contributes to overeating and obesity in adults. This same variant has now been linked to childhood obesity and tasty food choices, particularly for girls, according to a new study by Dr. Patricia Silveira and Prof. Michael Meaney of McGill University and Dr. Robert Levitan of the University of Toronto.Contrary to “blaming” obese individuals for making poor food choices, Meaney and his team suggest that obesity lies at the interface of three factors: genetic predispositions, environmental stress and emotional well-being. These findings, published in the journal, Appetite, shed light on why some children may be predisposed to obesity, and could mark a critical step towards prevention and treatment.”In broad terms, we are finding that obesity is a product of genetics, early development and circumstance,” says Meaney, who is also Associate Director of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute Research Centre. The work is part of the MAVAN (Maternal Adversity Vulnerability & Neurodevelopment) project, headed by Meaney and Hélène Gaudreau, Project Coordinator. Their team studied pregnant women, some of whom suffered from depression or lived in poverty, and followed their children from birth until the age of ten.For the study, researchers tested 150 four-year old MAVAN children by administering a snack test meal. The children were faced with healthy and non-healthy food choices. Mothers also completed a questionnaire to address their child’s normal food consumption and preferences. …

via ScienceDaily: Top Science News:

Nov. 24, 2013 — Much like the Grand Canyon, Nanedi Valles snakes across the Martian surface suggesting that liquid water once crossed the landscape, according to a team of researchers who believe that molecular hydrogen made it warm enough for water to flow. The presence of molecular hydrogen, in addition to carbon dioxide and water, could have created a greenhouse effect on Mars 3.8 billion years ago that pushed temperatures high enough to allow for liquid water, the researchers state in the current issue of Nature Geoscience. The team includes Ramses M. Ramirez, a doctoral student working with James Kasting, Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences, Penn State.Previous efforts to produce temperatures warm enough to allow for liquid water used climate models that include only carbon dioxide and water and were unsuccessful. The researchers used a model to show that an atmosphere with sufficient carbon dioxide, water and hydrogen could have made the surface temperatures of Mars warm to above freezing. Those above-freezing temperatures would allow liquid water to flow across the Martian surface over 3.8 billion years ago and form the ancient valley networks, such as Nanedi Valles, much the way sections of the Grand Canyon snake across the western United States today.”This is exciting because explaining how early Mars could have been warm and wet enough to form the ancient valleys had scientists scratching their heads for the past 30 years,” said Ramirez. “We think we may have a credible solution to this great mystery.”The researchers note that one alternative theory is that the Martian valleys formed after large meteorites bombarded the planet, generating steam atmospheres that then rained out. But this mechanism cannot produce the large volumes of water thought necessary to carve the valleys.”We think that there is no way to form the ancient valleys with any of the alternate cold early Mars models,” said Ramirez. “However, the problem with selling a warm early Mars is that nobody had been able to put forth a feasible mechanism in the past three decades. So, we hope that our results will get people to reconsider their positions.”Ramirez and post-doctoral researcher Ravi Kopparapu co-developed a one-dimensional climate model to demonstrate the possibility that the gas levels from volcanic activity could have created enough hydrogen and carbon dioxide to form a greenhouse and raise temperatures sufficiently to allow for liquid water. Once they developed the model, Ramirez ran the model using new hydrogen absorption data and used it to recreate the conditions on early Mars, a time when the sun was about 30 percent less bright than it is today.”It’s kind of surprising to think that Mars could have been warm and wet because at the time the sun was much dimmer,” Ramirez said.Mars’ mantle appears to be more reduced than Earth’s, based on evidence from Shergotty, Nahkla, and Chassigny meteorites, Martian meteorites named for the towns near which they were found. …

Computer scientists are working to create a virtual birthing simulator that will help doctors and midwives prepare for unusual or dangerous births. via ScienceDaily: Top Health News:

Nov. 22, 2013 — Computer scientists from the University of East Anglia are working to create a virtual birthing simulator that will help doctors and midwives prepare for unusual or dangerous births.Share This:The new program will take into account factors such as the shape of the mother’s body and the positioning of the baby to provide patient-specific birth predictions. The research will be presented at the International Conference on E-Health and Bioengineering in Romania.Dr Rudy Lapeer from UEA’s school of Computing Sciences is leading the project. He said: “We are creating a forward engineered simulation of childbirth using 3D graphics to simulate the sequence of movements as a baby descends through the pelvis during labor”Users will be able to input key anatomical data — such as the size and shape of the mother’s pelvis, and the baby’s head and torso. By doing this you will be able to set different bespoke scenarios for both the mother and baby.”The simulation software will see ultra-sound data used to re-create a geometric model of a baby’s skull and body in 3D graphics as well as the mother’s body and pelvis. Programers are also taking into account the force from the mother pushing during labor and are even modelling a ‘virtual’ midwife’s hands which can interact with the baby’s head.”Because this program is patient-specific, doctors and midwives will be able to see how a birth may take place before it has happened on a case-by-case basis. For example, you would be able to see if a baby’s shoulders will get stuck.”We hope that this could help to avoid complicated births altogether by guiding people in the medical profession to advise on caesarean sections where necessary.”Share this story on Facebook, Twitter, and Google:Other social bookmarking and sharing tools:|Story Source: The above story is based on materials provided by University of East Anglia. The work was not planned and the risks ignored.”Forklift trucks remain one of the most dangerous hazards in the construction industry and executives must ensure they plan any work involving the vehicle properly.By Chris StevensonOr call us on freephone 0800 884 0321SHARE THIS

Large graphene crystals with exceptional electrical properties created

Researchers are using oxygen to grow large single graphene crystals on copper. Large single-crystal graphene is of great interest because the grain boundaries in polycrystalline material have defects, and eliminating such defects makes for a better material.

via ScienceDaily: Top Science News:

Nov. 14, 2013 — When it comes to the growth of graphene — an ultrathin, ultrastrong, all-carbon material — it is survival of the fittest, according to researchers at The University of Texas at Austin. The team used surface oxygen to grow centimeter-size single graphene crystals on copper. The crystals were about 10,000 times as large as the largest crystals from only four years ago. Very large single crystals have exceptional electrical properties.”The game we play is that we want nucleation (the growth of tiny ‘crystal seeds’) to occur, but we also want to harness and control how many of these tiny nuclei there are, and which will grow larger,” said Rodney S. Ruoff, professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering. “Oxygen at the right surface concentration means only a few nuclei grow, and winners can grow into very large crystals.”The team — led by postdoctoral fellow Yufeng Hao and Ruoff of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Materials Science and Engineering Program, along with Luigi Colombo, a material scientist with Texas Instruments — worked for three years on the graphene growth method. The team’s paper, “The Role of Surface Oxygen in the Growth of Large Single-Crystal Graphene on Copper,” is featured on the cover of the Nov. 8, 2013, issue of Science. One of the world’s strongest materials, graphene is flexible and has high electrical and thermal conductivity that makes it a promising material for flexible electronics, solar cells, batteries and high-speed transistors. The team’s understanding of how graphene growth is influenced by differing amounts of surface oxygen is a major step toward improved high-quality graphene films at industrial scale. The team’s method “is a fundamental breakthrough, which will lead to growth of high-quality and large area graphene film,” said Sanjay Banerjee, who heads the Cockrell School’s South West Academy of Nanoelectronics (SWAN). “By increasing the single-crystal domain sizes, the electronic transport properties will be dramatically improved and lead to new applications in flexible electronics.”Graphene has always been grown in a polycrystalline form, that is, it is composed of many crystals that are joined together with irregular chemical bonding at the boundaries between crystals (“grain boundaries”), something like a patch-work quilt. …

By Brittany Cordeiro

Each day in the United States, about 4,000 kids smoke their

first cigarette. Many of them will become daily smokers.

“For teens, it may seem cool to smoke. But tobacco use at a

young age can cause immediate and long-term health problems like cancer,” says Alexander Prokhorov,

M.D., Ph.D.
, director of the Tobacco Outreach Education Program at MD

Anderson.

Recent data shows that the declining number of teen

tobacco users
has stalled. And, the tobacco industry may be to blame.

The industry advertises products, like e-cigarettes,

flavored cigarillos and hookahs, as “safe” and is capturing the attention of

kids.

“All tobacco products are dangerous,” Prokhorov says. “We

need to be proactive about educating our communities, schools and governments

about the dangers of these products.”

Use the facts below to educate kids about the health risks

of trendy tobacco products.

Cigarillos contain

dangerous chemicals
Cigar

use
among high school students rose from 7% in 2009 to 12% in 2011. One

main factor: flavored cigarillos.

Cigarillos, or little cigars, are a cousin to the flavored

cigar. They’re sweet, cheap and come in colorful packages. “They’re especially

appealing to minorities,” Prokhorov says. “The tobacco industry recognizes this

and markets to them.”

You can buy cigarillos individually for less than 70 cents.

Health risks: Cigarillos

may seem fun to kids, but they contain the same dangerous chemicals as regular

cigarettes and cigars. Smoking them can cause heart disease, lung cancer and

lung disease.

Hookahs promote

nicotine addiction
Hookahs are water pipes that create flavored tobacco vapor.

Most people use hookahs at bars and cafes to socialize, but companies also sell

hookahs for personal use.

Health risks: During the average 40-minute hookah

session, users can inhale about 100 times the amount of smoke that’s in a

cigarette.

“The culprit is still nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals,”

Prokhorov says. “Nicotine addiction in youth can develop fast and remain

strong.”

E-cigarettes: a

gateway for other tobacco products
Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are smokeless

electronic devices that the tobacco industry is pitching as harmless.

E-cigarette users inhale a vapor of liquid nicotine similar

to the way a smoker puffs on a cigarette. You can buy the liquid nicotine in a

wide variety flavors.

“Don’t be fooled,” Prokhorov says. “Because e-cigarettes

aren’t regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, we don’t know what chemicals

and additives are really in e-cigarettes, but they could be harmful.”

Health risks: Even

though they don’t use tobacco, e-cigarettes contain nicotine and can easily

become a gateway for teens to try other tobacco products. E-cigarettes also can

put kids at risk for lung cancer and heart disease.

A natural shift to stronger warm El Niño events in the Pacific Ocean might be responsible for a substantial portion of the global warming recorded during the past 50 years, according to new research.

via ScienceDaily: Top Science News:

Nov. 13, 2013 — A natural shift to stronger warm El Niño events in the Pacific Ocean might be responsible for a substantial portion of the global warming recorded during the past 50 years, according to new research at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).“Our modeling shows that natural climate cycles explain at least part of the ocean warming we’ve seen since the 1950s,” said Dr. Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist in UAH’s Earth System Science Center and the new study’s lead author. “But we also found that because the globe has had more frequent La Niña cooling events in the past 10 or 15 years, they are canceling out some of the effects of global warming.”The paper detailing this research, “The Role of ENSO in Global Ocean Temperature Changes During 1955-2011 Simulated with a 1D Climate Model,” is scheduled for publication in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Science. The results also suggest the world will warm by 1.3 C (about 2.34° F) from a doubling of atmospheric CO2, which is only one-half of the warming expected by most climate researchers.General circulation climate models – such as those used to forecast global climate change – do not reproduce the tendency toward 30 year periods of stronger El Niño or La Niña activity, as are seen in nature.Spencer and co-author Dr. Danny Braswell used all of the usual climate modeling forcings – including carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas enrichment – in their study, but also plugged the observed history of El Niño ocean warming and La Niña ocean cooling events into their model to calculate the 61-year change in global ocean temperature averages from the sea surface to a depth of 2,000 meters.“We used the observed ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) history since the 1950s as a pseudo forcing factor of the model,” Spencer said. When they ran their ocean model without ENSO, they arrived at the same general conclusions as the more complex general circulation climate models. When they added data from past El Niño and La Niña events as only a change in ocean mixing, the model indicated a climate system that is slightly less sensitive to CO2-induced warming than has been believed. But the biggest change was when the model was allowed to change cloud cover with El Niño and La Niña in the same way as has been observed from satellites. The results suggest that these natural climate cycles change the total amount of energy received from the sun, providing a natural warming and cooling mechanism of the surface and the deep ocean on multi-decadal time scales.“As a result, because as much as 50 percent of the warming since the 1970s could be attributed to stronger El Niño activity, it suggests that the climate system is only about half as sensitive to increasing CO2 as previously believed,” Spencer said.“Basically, previously it was believed that if we doubled the CO2 in the atmosphere, sea surface temperatures would warm about 2.5 C,” Spencer said. That’s 4.5° F. “But when we factor in the ENSO warming, we see only a 1.3 C (about 2.3° F) final total warming after the climate system has adjusted to having twice as much CO2.”It was previously known that Pacific Ocean warming and cooling events come and go in roughly 30-year periods of predominance, where El Niño warming events are stronger than La Niño cooling events for approximately 30 years, followed by roughly three decades where the reverse is true.During the period of this study, cooling events were dominant from the 1950s into the late 1970s. That was followed by a period of strong El Niño warming activity that lasted into the early 2000s. …

New light on dark energy, cosmic speed-up: Big Bang afterglow shows Earth has no special place in expanding universe

Astronomers have ruled out a controversial theory that the accelerating expansion of the universe is an illusion. While the findings don’t explain the cosmic speed-up, they eliminate one provocative possibility that our planet, solar system and galaxy are at the center of the universe and that there is no dark energy.

via ScienceDaily: Top Science News:

Nov. 7, 2013 — In a new study, Dartmouth researchers rule out a controversial theory that the accelerating expansion of the universe is an illusion. While the findings don’t explain the cosmic speed-up, they eliminate one provocative possibility that our planet, solar system and galaxy are at the center of the universe and that there is no dark energy. The findings appear in the journal Physical Review D.The 2011 Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. One leading idea to explain the acceleration is a new, mysterious substance called dark energy, which is thought to make up nearly three-fourths of the energy of the universe. But another alternative is that Earth, our solar system and Milky Way galaxy are at the center of the universe. That theory violates the standard assumption that the universe has no center, but if true, then cosmic acceleration could be explained without dark energy or any new laws of physics. But Dartmouth researchers found that this model can’t hold up to other observational tests. The sky glows with light left over from the Big Bang, also known as the Cosmic Microwave Background, so they calculated how that glow would be affected. Their findings show that the model’s prediction is completely contrary to the glow that has been measured.”Essentially, we held a mirror up to the universe and asked if the reflection was special,” says Robert Caldwell, a professor of physics and astronomy who co-wrote the article with undergraduate physics major Nina Maksimova. “The reflection shows that we do not appear to live in a special location, and decisively excludes this explanation for the universe’s accelerating expansion. It would be a great relief to be able to understand a basic problem of cosmology within the known laws of physics, but our research is an important step in explaining the physics responsible for the cosmic acceleration.”

Ivy is 4 months old!

Slow down. Just please slow down a bit, little Ivy. You’re changing too fast!

New tricks this month:

  • laughing (for real)

  • grabbing onto things, holding them, and putting them in her mouth

  • rolling over

  • *not* nursing when she’s nursing–this girl is super distracted by anything

  • I think she’s beginning to recognize the word “nurse”

  • pottying really well–almost every time I bring her to the potty, she will go

  • wiggling and squirming and scooting herself around. No more leaving her unattended on the bed!

Ivy loves to stand up and watch what’s going on. She will also jump up and down (okay, more like standing up and then sitting down) which sends Zari into paroxysms of laughter. She loves playing with her siblings as long as they are not squishing her. Which happens a lot, unfortunately.

Ivy helps put Inga to bed almost every time now. This is our routine:

Ivy is big enough for a back carry now. She’s gone on some walks in the Ergo. I’ve also put her in the stroller a few times.

Ivy loves any form of water: shower, baths, swimming pools, sprinklers. We’ve taken her swimming a lot this last month. Never a single squawk, no matter the water temperature.

A sneak peek from a mini session I did last weekend with m.e.g. photography. She is AMAZING.

Study: Gardening and DIY projects can boost heart health

Gardening and simple tasks around the house can lead to a longer life, according to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Researchers from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences found that adults over the age of 60 who engaged in tasks such as gardening, home maintenance or automotive repair have better overall cardiovascular health.

According to the study's lead investigator, Elin Ekblom-Bak, the key to developing and maintaining good heart health is staying on your feet and avoiding sitting as much as possible.

"Sitting is mainly replacing time you spend in daily activity and vice versa," Ekblom-Bak said in a press release. "The results of this study showed that activities of daily life are as important as regular intentional exercise for older adults for cardiovascular health and longevity."

In the analysis, 3,800 men and women born in 1937 or 1938 were asked about their lifestyle, which included information about their diet and how physically active they were. The researchers also took blood samples to measure sugar and fat levels. Over the course of the 12-year trial, 476 participants either died from or experienced a heart attack or stoke. Those in the group who said that they moved regularly reduced their risk of being affected by these conditions by 30 percent.

Ekblom-Bak also noted in the press release that physicians should encourage their older patients to engage in these basic tasks, especially if they are no longer able to engage in vigorous exercise.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will not only reduce your risk for heart attack or stroke, it may also make you eligible for competitive term life insurance rates. Visit LifeInsure.com to find out which life insurance policies you may qualify for.

via ScienceDaily: Top Science News:

Nov. 8, 2013 — An international team of high-energy physicists says the discovery of an electrically charged subatomic particle called Zc(4020) is a sign that they have begun to unveil a whole new family of four-quark objects. The Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII) collaboration, which includes scientists from UH Mānoa, previously announced the discovery of a mysterious four-quark particle called Zc(3900) in April 2013.”While quarks have long been known to bind together in groups of twos or threes, these new results seem to be quickly opening the door to a previously elusive type of four-quark matter,” said Frederick Harris, a professor of physics and astronomy at UH Mānoa, and a spokesman for the BESIII experiment. “The unique data sample collected by the BESIII collaboration has continued to yield a stream of clues about the nature of multi-quark objects.”The recent breakthroughs by the BESIII collaboration have come about through a dedicated study of the byproducts of the anomalous Y(4260) particle.Using the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII) in China, scientists tuned the energy at which electrons and positrons annihilate matter to 4260 MeV, which corresponds to the mass of the Y(4260) particle. The BESIII Collaboration used this method to directly produce and collect large samples of the particle’s byproducts, or decays. This experimental method allowed the BESIII collaboration to first observe the Zc(3900) and then the Zc(4020). Also recently spotted in the decays is the electrically neutral X(3872), a particle that has been experimentally established for more than 10 years, and has long been suspected to be a four-quark object.”The year 2013 has so far been an exciting one for the BESIII experiment,” Harris said. “Using decays of the Y(4260), a family of four-quark objects has begun to appear. While the theoretical picture remains to be finalized, more and more clues are suggesting that we are witnessing new forms of matter. And while a new ‘zoo’ of mysterious particles is emerging, it seems a new classification system may soon be at hand to understand it.”About the BESIII ExperimentThe Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII) experiment at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider is composed of about 350 physicists from 50 institutions in 11 countries. U.S. groups include Carnegie Mellon University, Indiana University, The University of Minnesota, The University of Rochester, as well as physicists in the High Energy Physics Group, in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.
