If you talk to many very successful traders they know the importance of trading psychology. But they are not consumed by it. In last 10 years I have interacted closely with many successful traders, few market wizards , and some hedge fund people, none of them had ever hired a trading psychologist. And most of those people are at top of their game. The key to their success is their belief system.But if you talk to struggling traders they often think trading psychology is important and some claim it is the most important thing. But if you talk to struggling traders they often think trading psychology is important and some claim it is the most important thing. If psychology is an issue for you and you think it is affecting your trading , what concrete steps can you take to resolve it.

There is lot of talk of trading psychology , but what exactly are the 3 or 5 things you can do to improve your psychology.


If you want to increase your muscles you go and lift weight


If you want to improve your stamina, you go and run daily


If you want to reduce weight you eat less and exercise more


What exactly do you need to do to improve your psychology.



First starting point if you want to improve your psychology is by examining your beliefs

You can only trade what you believe in.


Your beliefs drive your behavior.


If you believe only way to trade is using mechanical methods ( that is a belief) and as a result all your behavior will flow from it.


If you believe one should only trade triple etf and not waste time on individual stocks (that is a belief) and as a result all your behavior will flow from it.


If you believe that only way to trade is with big risk (that is a belief) and as a result all your behavior will flow from it.


Every trade has deeply held beliefs. The bundle of deeply held beliefs drive what kind of setup they will trade, what kind of timeframe they will trade and also all elements of trade like entry, exit , risk, and number of positions held.


Beliefs are not necessarily based on science or logic. In trading there are many beliefs based on to others pseudoscience . Personally I would never trade based on Elliott Waves , because it is not in line with my belief system. I believe it is not scientific and hocus focus. But there are traders who build their entire trading around it.


Your beliefs drive your trading actions. If you want better results in your trading you start by examining your beliefs about market, how they operate and about your trading and beliefs behind those trading decisions. A critical study of them might show you where you need to fix things.


It is difficult to change beliefs. Contrary to what self help books and many motivational authors and speakers will tell you it is not easy to change beliefs. Beliefs persist for lifetime in some people. So much of human behavior is driven by beliefs. Religion survives because people are driven by beliefs.


But psychologists who have studied beliefs know it is difficult to change deeply ingrained beliefs. There are no magical technique or method which will change your beliefs overnight.To change beliefs you need to educate yourself , expose yourself to new way of thinking, get rewarded for new beliefs.


When you are kid you have many simple beliefs, like monster exist or eating sweets will lead to cavities, or my parents are going to be forever, but as you grow and get exposed to science your beliefs change.


New knowledge and new discovery leads to change of beliefs. Same thing with markets and and trading. More you educate yourself and expose yourself to different beliefs you will reexamine some of your deeply held beliefs and start changing them. Your surroundings and people you interact with also helps to change or reinforce your beliefs. If you want to change beliefs change your surroundings, friends, family and incentive structure.



For traders same thing applies. If you hang around with traders who all the time whine and “believe” market is manipulated, you will also imbibe same beliefs, you will get rewarded in that setting for those beliefs. If you change that and say start interacting with a highly motivated trader with 10 year plus track record and no negative years , your beliefs will change. In that setting you will not be rewarded for your beliefs about manipulation.

First starting point if you want to improve your psychology is by examining your beliefs


Align your beliefs with market structure by educating yourself about how markets work. Align your belief with what has shown to have worked in the market based on history and statistics. Align your belief with a style of investing growth, value, contrarian investing. Align your belief with time frame (day trade , swing, position). Align your belief with right kind of market paradigm


Lot of time people claim they have discipline problem, but the basic problem is wrong beliefs and as a result wrong behavior. If you fix the beliefs discipline is comparatively easy.

Previous explanations suggested that the stars that form the bulge are in banana-like orbits, but a paper published this week in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society suggests that the stars probably move in peanut-shell or figure of eight-shaped orbits instead.The difference is important; astronomers develop theories of star motions to not only understand how the stars in our galaxy are moving today but also how our galaxy formed and evolves. The Milky Way is shaped like a spiral, with a region of stars at the centre known as the “bar,” because of its shape. In the middle of this region, there is a “bulge” that expands out vertically.In the new work Alice Quillen, professor of astronomy at the University of Rochester, and her collaborators created a mathematical model of what might be happening at the centre of the Milky Way. Unlike the Solar System where most of the gravitational pull comes from the Sun and is simple to model, it is much harder to describe the gravitational field near the centre of the Galaxy, where millions of stars, vast clouds of dust, and even dark matter swirl about. In this case, Quillen and her colleagues considered the forces acting on the stars in or near the bulge.As the stars go round in their orbits, they also move above or below the plane of the bar. When stars cross the plane they get a little push, like a child on a swing. At the resonance point, which is a point a certain distance from the centre of the bar, the timing of the pushes on the stars is such that this effect is strong enough to make the stars at this point move up higher above the plane. (It is like when a child on the swing has been pushed a little every time and eventually is swinging higher.) These stars are pushed out from the edge of the bulge.The resonance at this point means that stars undergo two vertical oscillations for every orbital period. …

Note: In this post I discussed some of the aspects about my former career while I was still working. One of my problems was “lack of adequate replacement”. Like some people have pointed out, most people need something to do. However, I would point out that this does not need to be a job. It could be taking care of a bonsai tree; or it could be working as a gardener. In terms of the suggestions below, they are remarkably constant. The only thing that’s changed in the two years that have passed is that I no longer foresee starting a bookstore.




What does early retirement mean for those who chose to save so intensely and early for retirement and essentially had enough money to stop working around age 30? This is a question I have been asking myself and for which there does not seem to be any conventional solutions.


In most cases, at least as far as I understand from reading Smartmoney magazine, early retirement means spending more time playing golf, being home with the kids, or seeing the world. None of this seems particularly appealing to me (I don’t have kids) right now. In 15 years, maybe, but not now.


Conventionally, I should be doing what most phds with a few years of experience do, that is, try to work myself to death in the desperate attempt to get tenure. Except for the death part, that is actually what I still do even though I in principle could quit. However, having seen first hand where this road can lead I must admit that I am no longer so sold on the idea as I was 5 years ago. Here’s my cost benefit analysis: costs: 95% of the students, grant writing, committees, relatively poor pay, forced mobility, department politics, and did I mention, 95% of the students – benefits: making my own schedule, 5% of the students, and doing research. I think having the freedom to take half the day off on Monday and work 16 hours on Tuesday is overrated given that it comes with a constant pressure to perform. It feels equally nice to work 9-5 and know that you are not supposed to work outside of those hours. Call me naive, but I have finally realized that 95% of the students at higher ed do not really seem to want to be there. Some professors live for the enthusiasm for the remaining 5%, but I don’t think the 1 in 20 ratio is high enough for me. Research is interesting and frustrating. Interesting because everything you do is a “first” e.g. you have discovered something that no humans have known before. Frustrating because there is a ton of dead ends that must be explored. It is really 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. Just imagine trying to come up with something creative when you know that in all likelihood it will fail. Then repeat and do it again. In addition, most researchers, myself included, are working on things that are only interesting 5 other people in the world. There’s a slight shot at fame. For instance, I have published a good 20 papers. Forsooth, you can find them in university libraries around them world, even! However, 30 years from now, I will just be a set of initials in some dusty journal that will only be read by some poor suffering grad student. I am after all not working on curing cancer, so while somewhat meaningful, my work is perhaps not terribly important [except for those 5 persons in the world]. It’s not a terribly bad life though. One gets to influence events in the sense of deciding where thousands and even millions of tax payer/alumni money gets spent. There’s all the free traveling to conferences etc. I have been to 14 countries so far and never paid a dime. It’s not exactly a luxury vacation, but the similarities are probably larger than the differences. However, I wonder whether I am going to spend the rest of my life doing this. If I do, I’m projected to pass $1,000,000 when I’m 40, but what am I going to spend that money on anyway? The law of diminishing returns of extra dollars is knocking on my door already. There is also significant opportunity cost. Maybe I will be wondering what if I had done something differently. The question is, what is the alternative. I think it is exceedingly important to live a life of no regrets.

Okay, so I could in principle retire, but I haven’t. Why not? One problem is that I have not found anything sufficiently meaningful to replace a full fledged career with. In contrast to a job a career should be a means of self-actualization and I tell you if you actually have a career goal in mind, this works out quite well. If you don’t, then it turns into a job fairly quickly, whoops!


Financially independent is a better description of my situation. Maybe people aren’t meant to retire this early. It’s almost like breaking the law of the rat-race e.g. “you still have so many years left in you”.


Perhaps Beingfrugal.net‘s son’s mom said it best when it what described as re-tirement as in changing tires during a pit stop. Yeah, I might want to change my tires.


Here’s my list of possible re-tirings.



  1. Start a PF blog (I have previously thought of becoming a tech writer and this seems to fit the bill).

  2. Start a bookstore.

  3. Buy a small farm, breed an army of sheep and take over the world.

  4. Sell my soul to Wall Street.

  5. Become a watch maker.


I have started on 1. The question is whether I can make a career out of it in the traditional sense of a career e.g. something that takes up much of the day and keeps me active while being somewhat meaningful and self-actualizing.


As you might have surmised I am not really sure about this. It turns out that it is a lot harder to figure out what to do with financial independence than to achieve it in the first place. It is definitely something I should have thought of earlier in the process.

The discovery, described in the Nov. 21 issue of Cell, breaks new ground, they say, in understanding the arms race between a jumping gene driven to colonize new areas of the human genome and cells working to limit the risk posed by such volatile bits of DNA.Jumping genes, more formally known as transposons or transposable elements, are DNA segments with the blueprints for proteins that help to either copy the segment or remove it, then insert it into a new place in the genome. Human genomes are littered with the remnants of ancient jumping genes, but because cells have an interest in limiting such trespasses, they have evolved ways to regulate them. Most jumping genes have mutated and can no longer move, but these “rusting hulks” are still passed down from generation to generation.One exception is a jumping gene called L1, which has been so successful that copies of it make up about 20 percent of human DNA. While many of these copies are now mutated and dormant, others are still active and thus the subject of much interest from geneticists.”Human cells have evolved ways of limiting jumping genes’ activity, since the more frequently they move, the more likely they are to disrupt an important gene and cause serious damage,” says Lixin Dai, Ph.D., a postdoctoral associate at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences, who led the study. To find out more about how cells control L1 and what tricks the jumping gene uses to get around these defenses, Dai and others in the laboratory of Jef Boeke, Ph.D., first induced lab-grown human cells to make large amounts of the proteins for which L1 contains the blueprints. As expected, the two types of L1 protein joined with human proteins and genetic material called RNA to form so-called ribonucleoprotein particle complexes, which L1 uses to “jump.”To find out which human proteins interact with ribonucleoproteins — and are therefore likely to have a role in either tamping down its activity or helping it along — Boeke’s team collaborated with researchers at The Rockefeller University who had developed a technique for fast-freezing yeast with liquid nitrogen, then grinding it up for analysis with steel balls and very rapidly pulling out the ribonucleoproteins with tiny magnetic particles. “It’s a good way of preserving the interactions,” Dai says.Adapting this powerful technique to human cells, the team found 37 proteins that appear to interact with the ribonucleoprotein, and they selected two for further analysis. …

Nov. 19, 2013 — Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have demonstrated in the laboratory a lithium-sulfur (Li/S) battery that has more than twice the specific energy of lithium-ion batteries, and that lasts for more than 1,500 cycles of charge-discharge with minimal decay of the battery’s capacity. This is the longest cycle life reported so far for any lithium-sulfur battery.A schematic of a lithium-sulfur battery with SEM photo of silicon-graphene oxide material.Demand for high-performance batteries for electric and hybrid electric vehicles capable of matching the range and power of the combustion engine encourages scientists to develop new battery chemistries that could deliver more power and energy than lithium-ion batteries, currently the best performing battery chemistry in the marketplace.For electric vehicles to have a 300-mile range, the battery should provide a cell-level specific energy of 350 to 400 Watt-hours/kilogram (Wh/kg). This would require almost double the specific energy (about 200 Wh/kg) of current lithium-ion batteries. The batteries would also need to have at least 1,000, and preferably 1,500 charge-discharge cycles without showing a noticeable power or energy storage capacity loss.”Our cells may provide a substantial opportunity for the development of zero-emission vehicles with a driving range similar to that of gasoline vehicles,” says Elton Cairns, of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division (EETD) at Berkeley Lab.The battery initially showed an estimated cell-specific energy of more than 500 Wh/kg and it maintained it at >300 Wh/kg after 1,000 cycles — much higher than that of currently available lithium-ion cells.The team is now seeking support for the continuing development of the Li/S cell, including higher sulfur utilization, operation under extreme conditions, and scale-up. Partnerships with industry are being sought. The next steps in the development are to further increase the cell energy density, improve cell performance under extreme conditions, and scale up to larger cells.The results were reported in the journal Nano Letters, in a paper authored by Min-Kyu Song (Molecular Foundry, Berkeley Lab), Yuegang Zhang (Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Cairns (Environmental Energy Technologies Division, Berkeley Lab). The research was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science and a University of California Proof of Concept Award.

Global emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels are set to rise again in 2013, reaching a record high of 36 billion tons – according to new figures from the Global Carbon Project. The biggest contributors to fossil fuel emissions in 2012 were China (27 per cent), the United States (14 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent), and India (6 per cent). The projected rise for 2013 comes after a similar rise of 2.2 per cent in 2012.

She said: “Governments meeting in Warsaw this week need to agree on how to reverse this trend. Additional emissions every year cause further warming and climate change.”Alongside the latest Carbon Budget is the launch of the Carbon Atlas – a new online platform showing the world’s biggest carbon emitters more clearly than ever before. Nov. 17, 2013 — Researchers have made the first battery electrode that heals itself, opening a new and potentially commercially viable path for making the next generation of lithium ion batteries for electric cars, cell phones and other devices. The secret is a stretchy polymer that coats the electrode, binds it together and spontaneously heals tiny cracks that develop during battery operation, said the team from Stanford University and the Department of Energy’s (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.They reported the advance in the Nov. 19 issue of Nature Chemistry.”Self-healing is very important for the survival and long lifetimes of animals and plants,” said Chao Wang, a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford and one of two principal authors of the paper. “We want to incorporate this feature into lithium ion batteries so they will have a long lifetime as well.”Chao developed the self-healing polymer in the lab of Stanford Professor Zhenan Bao, whose group has been working on flexible electronic skin for use in robots, sensors, prosthetic limbs and other applications. For the battery project he added tiny nanoparticles of carbon to the polymer so it would conduct electricity.”We found that silicon electrodes lasted 10 times longer when coated with the self-healing polymer, which repaired any cracks within just a few hours,” Bao said.”Their capacity for storing energy is in the practical range now, but we would certainly like to push that,” said Yi Cui, an associate professor at SLAC and Stanford who led the research with Bao. The electrodes worked for about 100 charge-discharge cycles without significantly losing their energy storage capacity. “That’s still quite a way from the goal of about 500 cycles for cell phones and 3,000 cycles for an electric vehicle,” Cui said, “but the promise is there, and from all our data it looks like it’s working.”Researchers worldwide are racing to find ways to store more energy in the negative electrodes of lithium ion batteries to achieve higher performance while reducing weight. One of the most promising electrode materials is silicon; it has a high capacity for soaking up lithium ions from the battery fluid during charging and then releasing them when the battery is put to work.But this high capacity comes at a price: Silicon electrodes swell to three times normal size and shrink back down again each time the battery charges and discharges, and the brittle material soon cracks and falls apart, degrading battery performance. This is a problem for all electrodes in high-capacity batteries, said Hui Wu, a former Stanford postdoc who is now a faculty member at Tsinghua University in Beijing, the other principal author of the paper.To make the self-healing coating, scientists deliberately weakened some of the chemical bonds within polymers — long, chain-like molecules with many identical units. …

Together with colleagues from Halle, he has now succeeded in extending this period by a factor of about a billion to several minutes. “This does not only open up the possibility of designing more compact computer memories, but could also be the basis for the setup of quantum computers,” Wulfhekel says. In theory at least, their speed might exceed that of classical computers by several factors.In their experiment, the researchers placed a single holmium atom onto a platinum substrate. Nov. 13, 2013 — A natural shift to stronger warm El Niño events in the Pacific Ocean might be responsible for a substantial portion of the global warming recorded during the past 50 years, according to new research at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).“Our modeling shows that natural climate cycles explain at least part of the ocean warming we’ve seen since the 1950s,” said Dr. Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist in UAH’s Earth System Science Center and the new study’s lead author. “But we also found that because the globe has had more frequent La Niña cooling events in the past 10 or 15 years, they are canceling out some of the effects of global warming.”The paper detailing this research, “The Role of ENSO in Global Ocean Temperature Changes During 1955-2011 Simulated with a 1D Climate Model,” is scheduled for publication in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Science.The results also suggest the world will warm by 1.3 C (about 2.34° F) from a doubling of atmospheric CO2, which is only one-half of the warming expected by most climate researchers.General circulation climate models – such as those used to forecast global climate change – do not reproduce the tendency toward 30 year periods of stronger El Niño or La Niña activity, as are seen in nature.Spencer and co-author Dr. Danny Braswell used all of the usual climate modeling forcings – including carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas enrichment – in their study, but also plugged the observed history of El Niño ocean warming and La Niña ocean cooling events into their model to calculate the 61-year change in global ocean temperature averages from the sea surface to a depth of 2,000 meters.“We used the observed ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) history since the 1950s as a pseudo forcing factor of the model,” Spencer said.When they ran their ocean model without ENSO, they arrived at the same general conclusions as the more complex general circulation climate models. When they added data from past El Niño and La Niña events as only a change in ocean mixing, the model indicated a climate system that is slightly less sensitive to CO2-induced warming than has been believed.But the biggest change was when the model was allowed to change cloud cover with El Niño and La Niña in the same way as has been observed from satellites. The results suggest that these natural climate cycles change the total amount of energy received from the sun, providing a natural warming and cooling mechanism of the surface and the deep ocean on multi-decadal time scales.“As a result, because as much as 50 percent of the warming since the 1970s could be attributed to stronger El Niño activity, it suggests that the climate system is only about half as sensitive to increasing CO2 as previously believed,” Spencer said.“Basically, previously it was believed that if we doubled the CO2 in the atmosphere, sea surface temperatures would warm about 2.5 C,” Spencer said. That’s 4.5° F. “But when we factor in the ENSO warming, we see only a 1.3 C (about 2.3° F) final total warming after the climate system has adjusted to having twice as much CO2.”It was previously known that Pacific Ocean warming and cooling events come and go in roughly 30-year periods of predominance, where El Niño warming events are stronger than La Niño cooling events for approximately 30 years, followed by roughly three decades where the reverse is true.During the period of this study, cooling events were dominant from the 1950s into the late 1970s. That was followed by a period of strong El Niño warming activity that lasted into the early 2000s. …

Nov. 7, 2013 — In a new study, Dartmouth researchers rule out a controversial theory that the accelerating expansion of the universe is an illusion.While the findings don’t explain the cosmic speed-up, they eliminate one provocative possibility that our planet, solar system and galaxy are at the center of the universe and that there is no dark energy. The findings appear in the journal Physical Review D.The 2011 Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. One leading idea to explain the acceleration is a new, mysterious substance called dark energy, which is thought to make up nearly three-fourths of the energy of the universe. But another alternative is that Earth, our solar system and Milky Way galaxy are at the center of the universe. That theory violates the standard assumption that the universe has no center, but if true, then cosmic acceleration could be explained without dark energy or any new laws of physics.But Dartmouth researchers found that this model can’t hold up to other observational tests. The sky glows with light left over from the Big Bang, also known as the Cosmic Microwave Background, so they calculated how that glow would be affected. Their findings show that the model’s prediction is completely contrary to the glow that has been measured.”Essentially, we held a mirror up to the universe and asked if the reflection was special,” says Robert Caldwell, a professor of physics and astronomy who co-wrote the article with undergraduate physics major Nina Maksimova. “The reflection shows that we do not appear to live in a special location, and decisively excludes this explanation for the universe’s accelerating expansion. It would be a great relief to be able to understand a basic problem of cosmology within the known laws of physics, but our research is an important step in explaining the physics responsible for the cosmic acceleration.”

Study: Gardening and DIY projects can boost heart health




Gardening and simple tasks around the house can lead to a longer life, according to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Researchers from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences found that adults over the age of 60 who engaged in tasks such as gardening, home maintenance or automotive repair have better overall cardiovascular health.


According to the study's lead investigator, Elin Ekblom-Bak, the key to developing and maintaining good heart health is staying on your feet and avoiding sitting as much as possible.


"Sitting is mainly replacing time you spend in daily activity and vice versa," Ekblom-Bak said in a press release. "The results of this study showed that activities of daily life are as important as regular intentional exercise for older adults for cardiovascular health and longevity."


In the analysis, 3,800 men and women born in 1937 or 1938 were asked about their lifestyle, which included information about their diet and how physically active they were. The researchers also took blood samples to measure sugar and fat levels. Over the course of the 12-year trial, 476 participants either died from or experienced a heart attack or stoke. Those in the group who said that they moved regularly reduced their risk of being affected by these conditions by 30 percent.

Nov. 7, 2013 — Skeletal muscle has proved to be very difficult to grow in patients with muscular dystrophy and other disorders that degrade and weaken muscle. Researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital’s Stem Cell Program now report boosting muscle mass and reversing disease in a mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, using a “cocktail” of three compounds identified through a new rapid culture system. Adding the same compounds to stem cells derived from patients’ skin cells, they then successfully grew human muscle cells in a dish.Senior investigator Leonard Zon, MD, director of the Stem Cell Program at Boston Children’s and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, hopes for clinical trials to begin transplanting these cells into patients with muscle loss in the next several years. In the meantime, the screening technique, described in the journal Cell (published online November 7), can also be applied to multiple disorders beyond muscular dystrophy, he says.#1: ZebrafishThe drug screening technique begins with zebrafish. Zon and colleagues placed tiny zebrafish blastomeres — cells from very early stage embryos — into 384-well culture dishes, adding one test compound to each well. This allowed them to screen 2,400 compounds at once, seeking ones that boosted numbers of muscle progenitor cells in the see-through fish as they developed.The Zon Lab’s earlier work with zebrafish led to a drug derived from prostaglandin that expands numbers of blood stem cells and is now in a Phase II clinical trial. But this time, researchers genetically modified the fish so that newly created muscle progenitor cells would show up in fluorescent green, and muscle fibers in red. Nov. 6, 2013 — Scientists have found the oldest fossil depicting copulating insects in northeastern China, published November 6th in the open-access journal PLOS ONE by Dong Ren and colleagues at the Capital Normal University in China.Share This:Fossil records of mating insects are fairly sparse, and therefore our current knowledge of mating position and genitalia orientation in the early stages of evolution is rather limited.In this study, the authors present a fossil of a pair of copulating froghoppers, a type of small insect that hops from plant to plant much like tiny frogs. The well-preserved fossil of these two froghoppers showed belly-to-belly mating position and depicts the male reproductive organ inserting into the female copulatory structure.This is the earliest record of copulating insects to date, and suggests that froghoppers’ genital symmetry and mating position have remained static for over 165 million years.
