Global emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels are set to rise again in 2013, reaching a record high of 36 billion tons – according to new figures from the Global Carbon Project. The biggest contributors to fossil fuel emissions in 2012 were China (27 per cent), the United States (14 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent), and India (6 per cent). The projected rise for 2013 comes after a similar rise of 2.2 per cent in 2012.

Nov. 18, 2013 — Global emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels are set to rise again in 2013, reaching a record high of 36 billion tonnes – according to new figures from the Global Carbon Project, co-led by researchers from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia (UEA).The 2.1 per cent rise projected for 2013 means global emissions from burning fossil fuel are 61 per cent above 1990 levels, the baseline year for the Kyoto Protocol.Prof Corinne Le Quéré of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia led the Global Carbon Budget report. She said: “Governments meeting in Warsaw this week need to agree on how to reverse this trend. Emissions must fall substantially and rapidly if we are to limit global climate change to below two degrees. Additional emissions every year cause further warming and climate change.”Alongside the latest Carbon Budget is the launch of the Carbon Atlas – a new online platform showing the world’s biggest carbon emitters more clearly than ever before. The Carbon Atlas reveals the biggest carbon emitters of 2012, what is driving the growth in China’s emissions, and where the UK is outsourcing its emissions. Users can also compare EU emissions and see which countries are providing the largest environmental services to the rest of the world by removing carbon from the atmosphere.“We are communicating new science,” said Prof Le Quéré. “Everyone can explore their own emissions, and compare them with their neighbouring countries – past, present, and future.”The Global Carbon Budget reveals that the biggest contributors to fossil fuel emissions in 2012 were China (27 per cent), the United States (14 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent), and India (6 per cent). Nov. 18, 2013 — University of Illinois anthropology professor Ripan Malhi looks to DNA to tell the story of how ancient humans first came to the Americas and what happened to them once they were here.He will share some of his findings at the meeting, “Ancient DNA: The First Three Decades,” at The Royal Society in London on Nov. 18 and 19.Malhi, an affiliate of the Institute for Genomic Biology at Illinois, will describe his collaborative approach, which includes working with present-day Native Americans on studies of their genetic history.He and a group of collaborators from the Tsimshian Nation on the northwest coast of British Columbia, for example, recently found a direct ancestral link between ancient human remains in the Prince Rupert Island area and the native peoples living in the region today. That study looked at changes in the mitochondrial genome, which children inherit only from their mothers.Other studies from Malhi’s lab analyze changes in the Y chromosome or the protein-coding regions of the genome.”The best opportunity to infer the evolutionary history of Native Americans and to assess the effects of European colonization is to analyze genomes of ancient Native Americans and those of their living descendants,” Malhi said.”I think what makes my lab unique is that we focus not only on the initial peopling of the Americas but also what happened after the initial peopling. How did these groups move to new environments and adapt to their local settings over 15,000 years?”While continuing his work in British Columbia, Malhi also is setting up study sites in California, Guatemala, Mexico and Illinois.”What’s interesting about the northwest coast and California is that these communities were complex hunter-gatherer societies, whereas in Mexico and Guatemala, it’s more communities that transitioned to farming and then experienced the effects of European colonization,” he said.Genomic studies can fill in the blanks on studies that seek to tell the story of life in the Americas before and after European colonization, Malhi said. Researchers may draw the wrong conclusions about human history when looking only at artifacts and language, he said.

But now Norwegian scientists are sounding the alarm that the bacteria can survive these treatments, by hiding in amoebae.Legionella bacteria can cause deadly pneumonia via our shower water. On the basis of her own recent findings, SINTEF scientist Catrine Ahlén warns that we should not blindly assume that the measures recommended to deal with legionella infections in water systems always work.Mystery solvedThe number of cases of legionellosis, or Legionnaires’ disease, has increased in Europe during the past few years, at the same time as a mystery has been building up; on board ships and in buildings all over the world, the feared bacteria have repeatedly turned up in tap-water, in spite of the recommended high doses of chlorine and hot-water treatments that have been implemented — measures that these bacteria don’t normally survive.But now the mystery appears to have been solved.Time to extend emergency preparednessFor the past three years, Catrine Ahlén has been collaborating with the Royal Norwegian Navy and her own colleagues at SINTEF and NTNU in systematic studies of how legionella problems arise and remain in ships’ water systems.In the samples from the navy ships, the SINTEF senior scientist found evidence that the bacteria had survived the recommended treatment by using the amoebae as a shield, something that had not previously been demonstrated in a water supply system.Chlorine and hot water kill legionella, but not amoebae, so Ahlén now strongly recommends that our contingency planning for legionella outbreaks should be extended to include the demonstration and elimination of amoebae, both at sea and ashore.Old water pipesOn land, legionella bacteria are tend to be found in the water supply of hotels, sports halls and swimming baths, and of institutions like hospitals and nursing homes.”The Norwegian water supply system is old. The pipes contain huge amounts of internal fouling in the shape of biofilm, a slimy coating that offers amoebae first-class living conditions. The network can therefore spread amoebae, even though many purification systems at sources of drinking water are hypermodern,” says Ahlén.In view of her findings on behalf of the Navy, she therefore recommends that everyone whose tap-water has been shown to contain legionella should order a set of analyses that would show whether the water also contains amoebae.Find themselves hostsAmoebae are relatively large single-celled organisms. They normally eat bacteria, including legionella; in other words, they kill them. However, laboratory tests in the USA showed as long ago as 2000 that a few legionella bacteria do manage to survive and reproduce inside amoebae.The research project with the Royal Norwegian Navy sampled water from 41 naval vessels. Half of them turned out to be infected by the species Legionella pneumophila (see fact-box). Ahlén and her colleagues also found amoebae in all the legionella-infected ships. …

Oct. 29, 2013 — Like humans, young rats that give birth have a reduced risk of breast cancer later in life. But a new study shows that this protective effect in animals is negated if they’re exposed to an obesity-linked hormone during pregnancy.The study, to be published online Nov. 1 in Cancer Prevention Research by Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center scientists, suggests an important direction for research in women’s health, particularly given obesity rates worldwide.In humans, pregnancy initially increases breast cancer risk within the first five to seven years after birth, and then either permanently reduces the risk by nearly half in younger women, or increases the risk in women older than 30. The same pattern is seen in rats.The link between obesity, pregnancy and breast cancer risk is only now being explored.”We know that pregnant women who gain an excessive amount of weight have high blood levels of leptin — a hormone made by fat tissue — and that they have an increased risk of developing breast cancer after menopause,” explains Leena Hilakivi-Clarke, PhD, a professor of oncology at Georgetown Lombardi, and lead author of the new study. “By studying these factors in animals, we hope to understand how they’re linked.”For the study, the researchers looked at breast cancer risk after pregnant rats were exposed to leptin and what, if any, gene changes could be observed.Their findings showed that similar to women, female rats had an initial increase in breast cancer risk after birth, but the risk eventually diminished to a level that was lower than in rats that did not give birth.”This suggests pregnancy has a life-long protective effect against breast cancer in animals as it does in women,” Hilakivi-Clarke explains.But breast cancer risk in the rats exposed to leptin during pregnancy did not decrease. “This is concerning, as it suggests the exposure to the obesity-linked hormone negated the protective effect of birth on breast cancer risk.”To discover possible reasons for the differences in breast cancer risk, the researchers looked at gene patterns in the mammary glands of all the rats. “We saw a much different pattern among the rat groups,” Hilakivi-Clarke says.In women and animals, pregnancy permanently turns on genes that allow healthy breast cells to protect themselves against insults that can initiate cancer. These gene changes are believed to explain the dramatic drop in breast cancer risk in women who had a child before age 20.”It appears that treating rats with leptin during pregnancy prevented the protective changes in genes from happening,” Hilakivi-Clarke explains. “This work points to an important direction for research to prevent breast cancer in women since obesity is an epidemic,” Hilakivi-Clarke concludes.
