The following is the latest post in my “Reader Profiles” series. Each post in this series details the financial situation and challenges of an FMF reader. The purpose of this series is to help us all identify with people like us (in similar situations — not all will be, of course, but eventually I’m sure you will find someone like you here), get to know the frequent commenters on the site, and hear some financial wisdom/challenges from people other than me.
If you’re interested in contributing to this series, then drop me an email. The series seems to be very popular with readers and I need a steady stream of new ones to keep it going.
Also, please leave constructive comments, questions, and so forth. Simply telling someone what a mess they have, how they have made poor decisions, and so forth is not helpful. There is a way to say, “That was a mistake, but here’s what you can do to correct it” that both acknowledges the problem and offers a solution. It’s this sort of feedback that this series is intended to solicit.
Next in the series is FMF reader JV. She answered my questions (in black italics below) as follows:
Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I am married, 25, and I work in sales in Pennsylvania. My husband is 25 and is a graduate student. We are college sweethearts and have been together for 6 years but only combined our finances about 2.5 years ago when I graduated from college, we got engaged, and we moved in together.
My husband will graduate with his Ph.D. soon so we both are in the process of finding new jobs for our next stage of life.
Describe your financial situation (who works in your family, how your income is (general), how your expenses are, etc.).
Both my husband and I work. My husband’s parents paid for his college, and my college was covered through a significant scholarship, some parent money, and part time jobs. Because of this, we do not have any student loans. We are in the lucky position to be able to focus on wealth building as soon as we have started our careers.
When I first started making money, I did want to buy nice furniture, kitchen gadgets, and clothes — all things that I had a little but not a lot of growing up. However, since then, I’ve started to value freedom more than stuff and we have reduced our expenses dramatically. In August, we moved to a crappy student apartment and reduced our rent by $400 a month. Our friends and family thought we were crazy for moving somewhere without a dishwasher, but being within walking distance of my husband’s job has been fantastic so we are happier here than we were at the other place. We’ve also sold our second car in the last few months.
On to the numbers:
Income
Total: $4,754.87
Expenses
The housing expenses are for our new place. Everything else is averaged over 10 months, which is how long I’ve been tracking all of our expenses.
Total: $3,390
Difference: $1,364.87 (29%)
Having affordable housing and no debt makes a huge difference in our ability to save while affording some pleasures. We have participated in multiple weddings and travel to see our family often but are glad to spend that money while cutting back elsewhere. We spend way too much money on food and it required constant attention for us. Also, I’d like to start giving to charity but I haven’t figured out where I’d like to give yet.
Assets
Net Worth: $39,436.63
We don’t keep much money in cash as my husband’s job as a graduate student is very secure and it’s just the two of us. However, we do anticipate needing to build up our cash reserves for moving expenses in the next year. I am also considering redistributing the investments to reduce the fees by choosing a cheap S&P 500 fund in my 401K and then distributing the rest of the money according to my ideal asset allocation of 90% stocks and 10% bonds.
Also, getting life insurance and wills has been on my to-do list since we’ve been married and I still haven’t done it yet. It is worth it for ~$40 a month.
What are the current financial issues you’re facing (saving, paying off debt, etc.)?
We are focusing more on keeping our expenses in check than on our investments. I’ve tried to keep our investments simple since our net worth is still small and the savings rate matters more at this point.
What are your plans for the future (retire early, build your career, etc.)?
We have a big life transition coming in the next year as we both switch jobs and hopefully increase our income (and savings rate) substantially. This is our top priority.
Also, I plan to grow my career by getting an MBA in the next few years as I hope to transition from technical sales to a more finance heavy role.
We hope to accumulate savings quickly over the next 5 years or so. Our goal is at least $400,000 by age 30. At that point, we hope to dial our careers back a bit to have a family. Even though that number isn’t enough for retirement, it is enough to give us many, many options with our careers and our family over the years.
What’s your best piece(s) of financial advice and/or your general philosophy on personal finances?
Focus on saving and avoid overwhelming amounts of debt. To reduce expenses, look at the big expenses like cars and housing, and the repeat expenses like phones, entertainment subscriptions, and internet. It takes once to address it, and you reap the benefits over time. Even though we personally do not have debt, we have many friends that have large amounts of student loans or car loans and it makes for a tight and stressful budget.
Also, focus on growing your income. The $4,000 in raises I’ve negotiated have been small but good practice for negotiating. I believe in increasing our income and that is why we plan on moving very soon.
But most of all, I’d like for people my age to know that having expenses much lower than their income makes life so much less stressful. The flexibility and increased financial security is worth so much more than what I’ve given up, even if it means I wash my dishes by hand.

Researchers have developed models to design a new polymer gel that would enable complex materials to regenerate themselves.

Nov. 26, 2013 — When a chair leg breaks or a cell phone shatters, either must be repaired or replaced. But what if these materials could be programmed to regenerate-themselves, replenishing the damaged or missing components, and thereby extend their lifetime and reduce the need for costly repairs? That potential is now possible according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering, who have developed computational models to design a new polymer gel that would enable complex materials to regenerate themselves.Principal investigator is Anna C. Balazs, PhD, the Swanson School’s Distinguished Robert v. d. Luft Professor of chemical and petroleum engineering, and co-authors are Xin Yong, PhD, postdoctoral associate, who is the article’s lead author; Olga Kuksenok, PhD, research associate professor; and Krzysztof Matyjaszewski, PhD, J.C. Warner University Professor of Natural Sciences, department of chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University.”This is one of the holy grails of materials science,” noted Dr. Balazs. “While others have developed materials that can mend small defects, there is no published research regarding systems that can regenerate bulk sections of a severed material. This has a tremendous impact on sustainability because you could potentially extend the lifetime of a material by giving it the ability to regrow when damaged.”The research team was inspired by biological processes in species such as amphibians, which can regenerate severed limbs. …

Nov. 22, 2013 — Computer scientists from the University of East Anglia are working to create a virtual birthing simulator that will help doctors and midwives prepare for unusual or dangerous births.Share This:The new program will take into account factors such as the shape of the mother’s body and the positioning of the baby to provide patient-specific birth predictions. The research will be presented at the International Conference on E-Health and Bioengineering in Romania.Dr Rudy Lapeer from UEA’s school of Computing Sciences is leading the project. He said: “We are creating a forward engineered simulation of childbirth using 3D graphics to simulate the sequence of movements as a baby descends through the pelvis during labor”Users will be able to input key anatomical data — such as the size and shape of the mother’s pelvis, and the baby’s head and torso. By doing this you will be able to set different bespoke scenarios for both the mother and baby.”The simulation software will see ultra-sound data used to re-create a geometric model of a baby’s skull and body in 3D graphics as well as the mother’s body and pelvis. Programers are also taking into account the force from the mother pushing during labor and are even modelling a ‘virtual’ midwife’s hands which can interact with the baby’s head.”Because this program is patient-specific, doctors and midwives will be able to see how a birth may take place before it has happened on a case-by-case basis. For example, you would be able to see if a baby’s shoulders will get stuck.”We hope that this could help to avoid complicated births altogether by guiding people in the medical profession to advise on caesarean sections where necessary.”Share this story on Facebook, Twitter, and Google:Other social bookmarking and sharing tools:|Story Source: The above story is based on materials provided by University of East Anglia. Nov. 22, 2013 — Think Greenland’s ice sheet is small today? It was smaller — as small as it has ever been in recent history — from 3-5,000 years ago, according to scientists who studied the ice sheet’s history using a new technique they developed for interpreting the Arctic fossil record.”What’s really interesting about this is that on land, the atmosphere was warmest between 9,000 and 5,000 years ago, maybe as late as 4,000 years ago. The oceans, on the other hand, were warmest between 5-3,000 years ago,” said Jason Briner, PhD, University at Buffalo associate professor of geology, who led the study.”What it tells us is that the ice sheets might really respond to ocean temperatures,” he said. “It’s a clue to what might happen in the future as the Earth continues to warm.”The findings appeared online on Nov. 22 in the journal Geology. Briner’s team included Darrell Kaufman, an organic geochemist from Northern Arizona University; Ole Bennike, a clam taxonomist from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland; and Matthew Kosnik, a statistician from Australia’s Macquarie University. The study is important not only for illuminating the history of Greenland’s ice sheet, but for providing geologists with an important new tool: A method of using Arctic fossils to deduce when glaciers were smaller than they are today.Scientists have many techniques for figuring out when ice sheets were larger, but few for the opposite scenario.”Traditional approaches have a difficult time identifying when ice sheets were smaller,” Briner said. “The outcome of our work is that we now have a tool that allows us to see how the ice sheet responded to past times that were as warm or warmer than present — times analogous to today and the near future.”The technique the scientists developed involves dating fossils in piles of debris found at the edge of glaciers. To elaborate: Growing ice sheets are like bulldozers, pushing rocks, boulders and other detritus into heaps of rubble called moraines.Because glaciers only do this plowing when they’re getting bigger, logic dictates that rocks or fossils found in a moraine must have been scooped up at a time when the associated glacier was older and smaller. So if a moraine contains fossils from 3,000 years ago, that means the glacier was growing — and smaller than it is today — 3,000 years ago. This is exactly what the scientists saw in Greenland: They looked at 250 ancient clams from moraines in three western regions, and discovered that most of the fossils were between 3-5,000 years old.The finding suggests that this was the period when the ice sheet’s western extent was at its smallest in recent history, Briner said.”Because we see the most shells dating to the 5-3000-year period, we think that this is when the most land was ice-free, when large layers of mud and fossils were allowed to accumulate before the glacier came and bulldozed them up,” he said.Because radiocarbon dating is expensive, Briner and his colleagues found another way to trace the age of their fossils.Their solution was to look at the structure of amino acids — the building blocks of proteins — in the fossils of ancient clams. Amino acids come in two orientations that are mirror images of each other, known as D and L, and living organisms generally keep their amino acids in an L configuration. When organisms die, however, the amino acids begin to flip. In dead clams, for example, D forms of aspartic acid start turning to L’s.Because this shift takes place slowly over time, the ratio of D’s to L’s in a fossil is a giveaway of its age.Knowing this, Briner’s research team matched D and L ratios in 20 Arctic clamshells to their radiocarbon-dated ages to generate a scale showing which ratios corresponded with which ages. …

Nov. 21, 2013 — Using a new method to catch elusive “jumping genes” in the act, researchers have found two human proteins that are used by one type of DNA to replicate itself and move from place to place. The discovery, described in the Nov. 21 issue of Cell, breaks new ground, they say, in understanding the arms race between a jumping gene driven to colonize new areas of the human genome and cells working to limit the risk posed by such volatile bits of DNA.Jumping genes, more formally known as transposons or transposable elements, are DNA segments with the blueprints for proteins that help to either copy the segment or remove it, then insert it into a new place in the genome. Human genomes are littered with the remnants of ancient jumping genes, but because cells have an interest in limiting such trespasses, they have evolved ways to regulate them. Most jumping genes have mutated and can no longer move, but these “rusting hulks” are still passed down from generation to generation. One exception is a jumping gene called L1, which has been so successful that copies of it make up about 20 percent of human DNA. While many of these copies are now mutated and dormant, others are still active and thus the subject of much interest from geneticists.”Human cells have evolved ways of limiting jumping genes’ activity, since the more frequently they move, the more likely they are to disrupt an important gene and cause serious damage,” says Lixin Dai, Ph.D., a postdoctoral associate at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences, who led the study. To find out more about how cells control L1 and what tricks the jumping gene uses to get around these defenses, Dai and others in the laboratory of Jef Boeke, Ph.D., first induced lab-grown human cells to make large amounts of the proteins for which L1 contains the blueprints. As expected, the two types of L1 protein joined with human proteins and genetic material called RNA to form so-called ribonucleoprotein particle complexes, which L1 uses to “jump.”To find out which human proteins interact with ribonucleoproteins — and are therefore likely to have a role in either tamping down its activity or helping it along — Boeke’s team collaborated with researchers at The Rockefeller University who had developed a technique for fast-freezing yeast with liquid nitrogen, then grinding it up for analysis with steel balls and very rapidly pulling out the ribonucleoproteins with tiny magnetic particles. “It’s a good way of preserving the interactions,” Dai says.Adapting this powerful technique to human cells, the team found 37 proteins that appear to interact with the ribonucleoprotein, and they selected two for further analysis. …

People who have suffered an injury, been involved in a car crash, or who have been damaged by someone else’s actions, often speak to a lawyer about their legal options. For many of these people, this is the first time they have ever stepped into an attorney’s office. They often don’t know very much about the law other than what they have seen on TV or read online. It’s very common for people in this type of situation to have a lot of questions about the law and the terminology that lawyers use. One of these terms, a “tort,” is something that lawyers often talk about, even though most people don’t really know what it means. Here’s what you need to know about torts.HarmsLet’s say you were riding your bike and were hit by a car. Because of the collision you suffered some minor injuries and your bicycle was destroyed. Can you sue the person driving the car? You probably can because the driver likely committed a tort. Torts are the legal basis for some lawsuits. More specifically, a tort is a harm that someone does to another person or organization that the law recognizes as a legitimate basis for a lawsuit. …

Nov. 18, 2013 — University of Illinois anthropology professor Ripan Malhi looks to DNA to tell the story of how ancient humans first came to the Americas and what happened to them once they were here.He will share some of his findings at the meeting, “Ancient DNA: The First Three Decades,” at The Royal Society in London on Nov. 18 and 19.Malhi, an affiliate of the Institute for Genomic Biology at Illinois, will describe his collaborative approach, which includes working with present-day Native Americans on studies of their genetic history. He and a group of collaborators from the Tsimshian Nation on the northwest coast of British Columbia, for example, recently found a direct ancestral link between ancient human remains in the Prince Rupert Island area and the native peoples living in the region today. That study looked at changes in the mitochondrial genome, which children inherit only from their mothers.Other studies from Malhi’s lab analyze changes in the Y chromosome or the protein-coding regions of the genome.”The best opportunity to infer the evolutionary history of Native Americans and to assess the effects of European colonization is to analyze genomes of ancient Native Americans and those of their living descendants,” Malhi said.”I think what makes my lab unique is that we focus not only on the initial peopling of the Americas but also what happened after the initial peopling. How did these groups move to new environments and adapt to their local settings over 15,000 years?”While continuing his work in British Columbia, Malhi also is setting up study sites in California, Guatemala, Mexico and Illinois.”What’s interesting about the northwest coast and California is that these communities were complex hunter-gatherer societies, whereas in Mexico and Guatemala, it’s more communities that transitioned to farming and then experienced the effects of European colonization,” he said.Genomic studies can fill in the blanks on studies that seek to tell the story of life in the Americas before and after European colonization, Malhi said. Researchers may draw the wrong conclusions about human history when looking only at artifacts and language, he said.

One of the methods used for examining the molecules in a liquid consists in passing the fluid through a nano-sized hole so as to detect their passage. Researchers have found a way to improve this technique by using a material with unique properties: graphene.

via ScienceDaily: Top Science News:
Nov. 17, 2013 — If we wanted to count the number of people in a crowd, we could make on the fly estimates, very likely to be imprecise, or we could ask each person to pass through a turnstile. The latter resembles the model that EPFL researchers have used for creating a “DNA reader” that is able to detect the passage of individual DNA molecules through a tiny hole: a nanopore with integrated graphene transistor. The DNA molecules are diluted in a solution containing ions and are driven by an electric field through a membrane with a nanopore. When the molecule goes through the orifice, it provokes a slight perturbation to the field, detectable not only by the modulations in ionic current but also by concomitant modulation in the graphene transistor current. Based on this information, it is possible to determine whether a DNA molecule has passed through the membrane or not. This system is based on a method that has been known for over a dozen years. The original technique was not as reliable since it presented a number of shortcomings such as clogging pores and lack of precision, among others. “We thought that we would be able to solve these problems by creating a membrane as thin as possible while maintaining the orifice’s strength,” said Aleksandra Radenovic from the Laboratory of Nanoscale Biology at EPFL. Together with Floriano Traversi, postdoctoral student, and colleagues from the Laboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures, she came across the material that turned out to be both the strongest and most resilient: graphene, which consists of a single layer of carbon molecules. The strips of graphene or nanoribbons used in the experiment were produced at EPFL, thanks to the work carried out at the Center for Micro Nanotechnology (CMI) and the Center for Electron Microscopy (CIME).”Through an amazing coincidence, continued the researcher, the graphene layer’s thickness measures 0.335 nm, which exactly fits the gap existing between two DNA bases, whereas in the materials used so far there was a 15 nm thickness.” As a result, while previously it was not possible to individually analyze the passage of DNA bases through these “long” tunnels — at a molecular scale -, the new method is likely to provide a much higher precision. Eventually, it could be used for DNA sequencing. However they are not there yet. …

Nov. 14, 2013 — When it comes to the growth of graphene — an ultrathin, ultrastrong, all-carbon material — it is survival of the fittest, according to researchers at The University of Texas at Austin. The team used surface oxygen to grow centimeter-size single graphene crystals on copper. The crystals were about 10,000 times as large as the largest crystals from only four years ago. Very large single crystals have exceptional electrical properties.”The game we play is that we want nucleation (the growth of tiny ‘crystal seeds’) to occur, but we also want to harness and control how many of these tiny nuclei there are, and which will grow larger,” said Rodney S. Ruoff, professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering. “Oxygen at the right surface concentration means only a few nuclei grow, and winners can grow into very large crystals.”The team — led by postdoctoral fellow Yufeng Hao and Ruoff of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Materials Science and Engineering Program, along with Luigi Colombo, a material scientist with Texas Instruments — worked for three years on the graphene growth method. The team’s paper, “The Role of Surface Oxygen in the Growth of Large Single-Crystal Graphene on Copper,” is featured on the cover of the Nov. 8, 2013, issue of Science. One of the world’s strongest materials, graphene is flexible and has high electrical and thermal conductivity that makes it a promising material for flexible electronics, solar cells, batteries and high-speed transistors. The team’s understanding of how graphene growth is influenced by differing amounts of surface oxygen is a major step toward improved high-quality graphene films at industrial scale. The team’s method “is a fundamental breakthrough, which will lead to growth of high-quality and large area graphene film,” said Sanjay Banerjee, who heads the Cockrell School’s South West Academy of Nanoelectronics (SWAN). “By increasing the single-crystal domain sizes, the electronic transport properties will be dramatically improved and lead to new applications in flexible electronics.”Graphene has always been grown in a polycrystalline form, that is, it is composed of many crystals that are joined together with irregular chemical bonding at the boundaries between crystals (“grain boundaries”), something like a patch-work quilt. …

Each day in the United States, about 4,000 kids smoke their
first cigarette. Many of them will become daily smokers.
“For teens, it may seem cool to smoke. But tobacco use at a
young age can cause immediate and long-term health problems like cancer,” says Alexander Prokhorov,
M.D., Ph.D., director of the Tobacco Outreach Education Program at MD
Anderson.
Recent data shows that the declining number of teen
tobacco users has stalled. And, the tobacco industry may be to blame.
The industry advertises products, like e-cigarettes,
flavored cigarillos and hookahs, as “safe” and is capturing the attention of
kids.
“All tobacco products are dangerous,” Prokhorov says. “We
need to be proactive about educating our communities, schools and governments
about the dangers of these products.”
Use the facts below to educate kids about the health risks
of trendy tobacco products.
Cigarillos contain
dangerous chemicals
Cigar
use among high school students rose from 7% in 2009 to 12% in 2011. One
main factor: flavored cigarillos.
Cigarillos, or little cigars, are a cousin to the flavored
cigar. They’re sweet, cheap and come in colorful packages. “They’re especially
appealing to minorities,” Prokhorov says. “The tobacco industry recognizes this
and markets to them.”
You can buy cigarillos individually for less than 70 cents.
Health risks: Cigarillos
may seem fun to kids, but they contain the same dangerous chemicals as regular
cigarettes and cigars. Smoking them can cause heart disease, lung cancer and
lung disease.
Hookahs promote
nicotine addiction
Hookahs are water pipes that create flavored tobacco vapor.
Most people use hookahs at bars and cafes to socialize, but companies also sell
hookahs for personal use.
Health risks: During the average 40-minute hookah
session, users can inhale about 100 times the amount of smoke that’s in a
cigarette.
“The culprit is still nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals,”
Prokhorov says. “Nicotine addiction in youth can develop fast and remain
strong.”
E-cigarettes: a
gateway for other tobacco products
Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are smokeless
electronic devices that the tobacco industry is pitching as harmless.
E-cigarette users inhale a vapor of liquid nicotine similar
to the way a smoker puffs on a cigarette. You can buy the liquid nicotine in a
wide variety flavors.
“Don’t be fooled,” Prokhorov says. “Because e-cigarettes
aren’t regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, we don’t know what chemicals
and additives are really in e-cigarettes, but they could be harmful.”
Health risks: Even
though they don’t use tobacco, e-cigarettes contain nicotine and can easily
become a gateway for teens to try other tobacco products. E-cigarettes also can
put kids at risk for lung cancer and heart disease.

Nov. 7, 2013 — In a new study, Dartmouth researchers rule out a controversial theory that the accelerating expansion of the universe is an illusion. While the findings don’t explain the cosmic speed-up, they eliminate one provocative possibility that our planet, solar system and galaxy are at the center of the universe and that there is no dark energy. The findings appear in the journal Physical Review D.The 2011 Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. One leading idea to explain the acceleration is a new, mysterious substance called dark energy, which is thought to make up nearly three-fourths of the energy of the universe. But another alternative is that Earth, our solar system and Milky Way galaxy are at the center of the universe. That theory violates the standard assumption that the universe has no center, but if true, then cosmic acceleration could be explained without dark energy or any new laws of physics. But Dartmouth researchers found that this model can’t hold up to other observational tests. The sky glows with light left over from the Big Bang, also known as the Cosmic Microwave Background, so they calculated how that glow would be affected. Their findings show that the model’s prediction is completely contrary to the glow that has been measured.”Essentially, we held a mirror up to the universe and asked if the reflection was special,” says Robert Caldwell, a professor of physics and astronomy who co-wrote the article with undergraduate physics major Nina Maksimova. “The reflection shows that we do not appear to live in a special location, and decisively excludes this explanation for the universe’s accelerating expansion. It would be a great relief to be able to understand a basic problem of cosmology within the known laws of physics, but our research is an important step in explaining the physics responsible for the cosmic acceleration.”

Gardening and simple tasks around the house can lead to a longer life, according to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Researchers from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences found that adults over the age of 60 who engaged in tasks such as gardening, home maintenance or automotive repair have better overall cardiovascular health.
According to the study's lead investigator, Elin Ekblom-Bak, the key to developing and maintaining good heart health is staying on your feet and avoiding sitting as much as possible.
"Sitting is mainly replacing time you spend in daily activity and vice versa," Ekblom-Bak said in a press release. "The results of this study showed that activities of daily life are as important as regular intentional exercise for older adults for cardiovascular health and longevity."
In the analysis, 3,800 men and women born in 1937 or 1938 were asked about their lifestyle, which included information about their diet and how physically active they were. The researchers also took blood samples to measure sugar and fat levels. Over the course of the 12-year trial, 476 participants either died from or experienced a heart attack or stoke. Those in the group who said that they moved regularly reduced their risk of being affected by these conditions by 30 percent.
Ekblom-Bak also noted in the press release that physicians should encourage their older patients to engage in these basic tasks, especially if they are no longer able to engage in vigorous exercise.
