It saved my life. But before I underwent the stem cell transplant as part of my acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treatment, I had seriously considered backing out.


My AML treatment plan

A stem cell transplant was not what I’d been hoping for. I’d hoped that the clinical trial I was on as part of my AML treatment would put me in remission.


However, that was not to be. So my leukemia doctor at MD Anderson sent me to the stem cell unit for a transplant.


When I landed at the airport in Houston to go meet with a stem cell doctor at MD Anderson, I met a man and told him why I was there. Like many I met on my AML journey, he encouraged me and said I would be in his prayers.


Afterwards, I went to MD Anderson for final testing and an appointment with Chitra Hosing, M.D., professor in Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy. I told her my concerns about the transplant, and she reassured me. She never pressed me to go forward, but she talked about windows of opportunity. I was in remission, albeit incomplete, and remission was the time for a stem cell transplant. I left her office ready to move forward.


Second thoughts about my stem cell transplant

The next Saturday, my daughter-in-law, Ali, and I got in the car to drive to the hospital for my transplant.


About halfway there I got a call from the sister of a friend I had made at the transfusion unit. Her brother, Jesus, was a leukemia patient, like me. I had been jealous of him because he’d gotten his treatment and gone home to El Paso to recover. I had really thought that is what I would be doing, too.


Jesus’ sister told me that he died from chemo poisoning. The call could not have come at a worse time. I could no longer think about myself. This woman had just lost her brother. He’d left behind two young children and a wife.

I told her I was sorry, and as soon as I hung up, I related what had happened to Ali.


I wondered if this might be a sign. He’d died of chemo poisoning. I was about to undergo massive chemo to administer my stem cell transplant. Was I going to meet the same fate? I told Ali my concerns.


Ali dropped me off in front of the hospital. I told her not to come in because my 5-month-old grandson was asleep in the car. I then told her I would call her if I changed my mind.


Finding my resolve

I stood in front of the hospital doors not knowing what to do. A call home to my wife relieved some of my fears, but I was still apprehensive.


As I thought about it, it became clear to me that going home was not an option. I had been home for visits. Every other day was spent at the transfusion unit of the local hospital. My platelet count hovered between 10 and 15 unless I got a transfusion, and my red cell count was not much better. I turned and walked through doors with resolve.


I would check in. I would face this bravely, heeding the words of my oldest brother, my stem cell donor, who told me how I acted would impact my children.


In the morning, I asked my doctor about chemo poisoning. He just chuckled and reassured me. Two of my children came to see me that day, and I held my tears in check as I assured them that Dad was going to be okay.


And three years later, I am. I know with some certainty that I would not be here had I walked away from this life saving transplant. The stranger I had met at the airport will never know that his prayers, and the prayers of many others, for me were answered.

One of the methods used for examining the molecules in a liquid consists in passing the fluid through a nano-sized hole so as to detect their passage. Researchers have found a way to improve this technique by using a material with unique properties: graphene.

Nov. 17, 2013 — If we wanted to count the number of people in a crowd, we could make on the fly estimates, very likely to be imprecise, or we could ask each person to pass through a turnstile. The latter resembles the model that EPFL researchers have used for creating a “DNA reader” that is able to detect the passage of individual DNA molecules through a tiny hole: a nanopore with integrated graphene transistor.The DNA molecules are diluted in a solution containing ions and are driven by an electric field through a membrane with a nanopore. When the molecule goes through the orifice, it provokes a slight perturbation to the field, detectable not only by the modulations in ionic current but also by concomitant modulation in the graphene transistor current. Based on this information, it is possible to determine whether a DNA molecule has passed through the membrane or not.This system is based on a method that has been known for over a dozen years. The original technique was not as reliable since it presented a number of shortcomings such as clogging pores and lack of precision, among others. “We thought that we would be able to solve these problems by creating a membrane as thin as possible while maintaining the orifice’s strength,” said Aleksandra Radenovic from the Laboratory of Nanoscale Biology at EPFL. Together with Floriano Traversi, postdoctoral student, and colleagues from the Laboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures, she came across the material that turned out to be both the strongest and most resilient: graphene, which consists of a single layer of carbon molecules. The strips of graphene or nanoribbons used in the experiment were produced at EPFL, thanks to the work carried out at the Center for Micro Nanotechnology (CMI) and the Center for Electron Microscopy (CIME).”Through an amazing coincidence, continued the researcher, the graphene layer’s thickness measures 0.335 nm, which exactly fits the gap existing between two DNA bases, whereas in the materials used so far there was a 15 nm thickness.” As a result, while previously it was not possible to individually analyze the passage of DNA bases through these “long” tunnels — at a molecular scale -, the new method is likely to provide a much higher precision. Eventually, it could be used for DNA sequencing.However they are not there yet. …

Researchers have made the first battery electrode that heals itself, opening a new and potentially commercially viable path for making the next generation of lithium ion batteries for electric cars, cell phones and other devices. The secret is a stretchy polymer that coats the electrode, binds it together and spontaneously heals tiny cracks that develop during battery operation, according to the research.

Nov. 17, 2013 — Researchers have made the first battery electrode that heals itself, opening a new and potentially commercially viable path for making the next generation of lithium ion batteries for electric cars, cell phones and other devices. The secret is a stretchy polymer that coats the electrode, binds it together and spontaneously heals tiny cracks that develop during battery operation, said the team from Stanford University and the Department of Energy’s (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.They reported the advance in the Nov. 19 issue of Nature Chemistry.”Self-healing is very important for the survival and long lifetimes of animals and plants,” said Chao Wang, a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford and one of two principal authors of the paper. “We want to incorporate this feature into lithium ion batteries so they will have a long lifetime as well.”Chao developed the self-healing polymer in the lab of Stanford Professor Zhenan Bao, whose group has been working on flexible electronic skin for use in robots, sensors, prosthetic limbs and other applications. For the battery project he added tiny nanoparticles of carbon to the polymer so it would conduct electricity.”We found that silicon electrodes lasted 10 times longer when coated with the self-healing polymer, which repaired any cracks within just a few hours,” Bao said.”Their capacity for storing energy is in the practical range now, but we would certainly like to push that,” said Yi Cui, an associate professor at SLAC and Stanford who led the research with Bao. The electrodes worked for about 100 charge-discharge cycles without significantly losing their energy storage capacity. “That’s still quite a way from the goal of about 500 cycles for cell phones and 3,000 cycles for an electric vehicle,” Cui said, “but the promise is there, and from all our data it looks like it’s working.”Researchers worldwide are racing to find ways to store more energy in the negative electrodes of lithium ion batteries to achieve higher performance while reducing weight. One of the most promising electrode materials is silicon; it has a high capacity for soaking up lithium ions from the battery fluid during charging and then releasing them when the battery is put to work.But this high capacity comes at a price: Silicon electrodes swell to three times normal size and shrink back down again each time the battery charges and discharges, and the brittle material soon cracks and falls apart, degrading battery performance. This is a problem for all electrodes in high-capacity batteries, said Hui Wu, a former Stanford postdoc who is now a faculty member at Tsinghua University in Beijing, the other principal author of the paper.To make the self-healing coating, scientists deliberately weakened some of the chemical bonds within polymers — long, chain-like molecules with many identical units. …
