Nov. 27, 2013 — Drugs delivered by nanoparticles hold promise for targeted treatment of many diseases, including cancer. However, the particles have to be injected into patients, which has limited their usefulness so far.Now, researchers from MIT and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) have developed a new type of nanoparticle that can be delivered orally and absorbed through the digestive tract, allowing patients to simply take a pill instead of receiving injections.In a paper appearing in the Nov. 27 online edition of Science Translational Medicine, the researchers used the particles to demonstrate oral delivery of insulin in mice, but they say the particles could be used to carry any kind of drug that can be encapsulated in a nanoparticle. The new nanoparticles are coated with antibodies that act as a key to unlock receptors found on the surfaces of cells that line the intestine, allowing the nanoparticles to break through the intestinal walls and enter the bloodstream.This type of drug delivery could be especially useful in developing new treatments for conditions such as high cholesterol or arthritis. Patients with those diseases would be much more likely to take pills regularly than to make frequent visits to a doctor’s office to receive nanoparticle injections, say the researchers.”If you were a patient and you had a choice, there’s just no question: Patients would always prefer drugs they can take orally,” says Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT, a member of MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, and an author of the Science Translational Medicine paper.Lead authors of the paper are former MIT grad student Eric Pridgen and former BWH postdoc Frank Alexis, and the senior author is Omid Farokhzad, director of the Laboratory of Nanomedicine and Biomaterials at BWH. Other authors are Timothy Kuo, a gastroenterologist at BWH; Etgar Levy-Nissenbaum, a former BWH postdoc; Rohit Karnik, an MIT associate professor of mechanical engineering; and Richard Blumberg, co-director of BWH’s Biomedical Research Institute.No more injectionsSeveral types of nanoparticles carrying chemotherapy drugs or short interfering RNA, which can turn off selected genes, are now in clinical trials to treat cancer and other diseases. These particles exploit the fact that tumors and other diseased tissues are surrounded by leaky blood vessels. After the particles are intravenously injected into patients, they seep through those leaky vessels and release their payload at the tumor site.For nanoparticles to be taken orally, they need to be able to get through the intestinal lining, which is made of a layer of epithelial cells that join together to form impenetrable barriers called tight junctions.”The key challenge is how to make a nanoparticle get through this barrier of cells. …

It was smaller — as small as it has ever been in recent history — from 3-5,000 years ago, according to scientists who studied the ice sheet’s history using a new technique they developed for interpreting the Arctic fossil record.”What’s really interesting about this is that on land, the atmosphere was warmest between 9,000 and 5,000 years ago, maybe as late as 4,000 years ago. The oceans, on the other hand, were warmest between 5-3,000 years ago,” said Jason Briner, PhD, University at Buffalo associate professor of geology, who led the study.”What it tells us is that the ice sheets might really respond to ocean temperatures,” he said. “It’s a clue to what might happen in the future as the Earth continues to warm.”The findings appeared online on Nov. 22 in the journal Geology. Briner’s team included Darrell Kaufman, an organic geochemist from Northern Arizona University; Ole Bennike, a clam taxonomist from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland; and Matthew Kosnik, a statistician from Australia’s Macquarie University.The study is important not only for illuminating the history of Greenland’s ice sheet, but for providing geologists with an important new tool: A method of using Arctic fossils to deduce when glaciers were smaller than they are today.Scientists have many techniques for figuring out when ice sheets were larger, but few for the opposite scenario.”Traditional approaches have a difficult time identifying when ice sheets were smaller,” Briner said. “The outcome of our work is that we now have a tool that allows us to see how the ice sheet responded to past times that were as warm or warmer than present — times analogous to today and the near future.”The technique the scientists developed involves dating fossils in piles of debris found at the edge of glaciers.To elaborate: Growing ice sheets are like bulldozers, pushing rocks, boulders and other detritus into heaps of rubble called moraines.Because glaciers only do this plowing when they’re getting bigger, logic dictates that rocks or fossils found in a moraine must have been scooped up at a time when the associated glacier was older and smaller.So if a moraine contains fossils from 3,000 years ago, that means the glacier was growing — and smaller than it is today — 3,000 years ago.This is exactly what the scientists saw in Greenland: They looked at 250 ancient clams from moraines in three western regions, and discovered that most of the fossils were between 3-5,000 years old.The finding suggests that this was the period when the ice sheet’s western extent was at its smallest in recent history, Briner said.”Because we see the most shells dating to the 5-3000-year period, we think that this is when the most land was ice-free, when large layers of mud and fossils were allowed to accumulate before the glacier came and bulldozed them up,” he said.Because radiocarbon dating is expensive, Briner and his colleagues found another way to trace the age of their fossils.Their solution was to look at the structure of amino acids — the building blocks of proteins — in the fossils of ancient clams. Amino acids come in two orientations that are mirror images of each other, known as D and L, and living organisms generally keep their amino acids in an L configuration.When organisms die, however, the amino acids begin to flip. In dead clams, for example, D forms of aspartic acid start turning to L’s.Because this shift takes place slowly over time, the ratio of D’s to L’s in a fossil is a giveaway of its age.Knowing this, Briner’s research team matched D and L ratios in 20 Arctic clamshells to their radiocarbon-dated ages to generate a scale showing which ratios corresponded with which ages. …

Nov. 20, 2013 — A Florida State University scientist has uncovered what may be the first recognized example of ancient Martian crust.The work of Munir Humayun — a professor in FSU’s Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science and a researcher at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) — is based on an analysis of a 4.4 billion-year-old Martian meteorite that was unearthed by Bedouin tribesmen in the Sahara desert. The rock (NWA 7533) may be the first recognized sample of ancient Martian crust and holds a wealth of information about the origin and age of the Red Planet’s crust.Humayun’s groundbreaking discoveries about the crust and what it reveals about the Red Planet’s origins will be published in the journal Nature.In order to detect minute amounts of chemicals in this meteorite, Humayun and his collaborators performed complex analysis on the meteorite using an array of highly sophisticated mass spectrometers in the MagLab’s geochemistry department. High concentrations of trace metals such as iridium, an element that indicates meteoritic bombardment, showed that this meteorite came from the elusive cratered area of Mars’ southern highlands.”This cratered terrain has been long thought to hold the keys to Mars’ birth and early childhood,” Humayun said.While craters cover more than half of Mars, this is the first meteoric sample to come from this area and the first time researchers are able to understand Mars’ early crustal growth.Using the chemical information found in pieces of soil contained in the meteorite, the researchers were able to calculate the thickness of Mars’ crust. Their calculation aligned with estimates from independent spacecraft measurements and confirms that Mars did not experience a giant impact that melted the entire planet in its early history.Using a powerful microprobe at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, the team dated special crystals within the meteorite — called zircons — at an astounding 4.4 billion years old.”This date is about 100 million years after the first dust condensed in the solar system,” Humayun said. “We now know that Mars had a crust within the first 100 million years of the start of planet building, and that Mars’ crust formed concurrently with the oldest crusts on Earth and the Moon.”Humayun and his collaborators hypothesize that these trailblazing discoveries are just the tip of the iceberg of what continued research on this unique meteorite will uncover. Further studies may reveal more clues about the impact history of Mars, the nature of Martian zircons and the makeup of the earliest sediments on the Red Planet.Humayun’s international team of collaborators include curator of meteorites Brigitte Zanda with the National Museum of Natural History (the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle) in Paris; A. Nov. 20, 2013 — Results from a DNA study of a young boy’s skeletal remains believed to be 24,000 years old could turn the archaeological world upside down — it’s been demonstrated that nearly 30 percent of modern Native American’s ancestry came from this youngster’s gene pool, suggesting First Americans came directly from Siberia, according to a research team that includes a Texas A&M University professor.Kelly Graf, assistant professor in the Center for the Study of First Americans and Department of Anthropology at Texas A&M, is part of an international team spearheaded by Eske Willerslev and Maanasa Raghaven from the Centre for GeoGenetics at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark and additional researchers from Sweden, Russia, United Kingdom, University of Chicago and University of California-Berkeley. Their work, funded by the Danish National Science Foundation, Lundbeck Foundation, and the National Science Foundation, is published in the current issue of Nature magazine.Graf and Willerslev conceived the project and traveled to the Hermitage State Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, where the remains are now housed to collect samples for ancient DNA. The skeleton was first discovered in the late 1920s near the village of Mal’ta in south-central Siberia, and since then it has been referred to as “the Mal’ta child” because until this DNA study the biological sex of the skeleton was unknown.”Now we can say with confidence that this individual was a male” says Graf.Graf helped extract DNA material from the boy’s upper arm and “the results surprised all of us quite a bit,” she explains.”It shows he had close genetic ties to today’s Native Americans and some western Eurasians, specifically some groups living in central Asia, South Asia, and Europe. Also, he shared close genetic ties with other Ice-Age western Eurasians living in European Russia, Czech Republic and even Germany. We think these Ice-Age people were quite mobile and capable of maintaining a far-reaching gene pool that extended from central Siberia all the way west to central Europe.”Another significant result of the study is that the Mal’ta boy’s people were also ancestors of Native Americans, explaining why some early Native American skeletons such as Kennewick Man were interpreted to have some European traits.”Our study proves that Native Americans ancestors migrated to the Americas from Siberia and not directly from Europe as some have recently suggested,” Graf explains.The DNA work performed on the boy is the oldest complete genome of a human sequenced so far, the study shows. Also found near the boy’s remains were flint tools, a beaded necklace and what appears to be pendant-like items, all apparently placed in the burial as grave goods.The discovery raises new questions about the timing of human entry in Alaska and ultimately North America, a topic hotly debated in First Americans studies.”Though our results cannot speak directly to this debate, they do indicate Native American ancestors could have been in Beringia — extreme northeastern Russia and Alaska — any time after 24,000 years ago and therefore could have colonized Alaska and the Americas much earlier than 14,500 years ago, the age suggested by the archaeological record.””What we need to do is continue searching for earlier sites and additional clues to piece together this very big puzzle.”

Global emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels are set to rise again in 2013, reaching a record high of 36 billion tons – according to new figures from the Global Carbon Project. The biggest contributors to fossil fuel emissions in 2012 were China (27 per cent), the United States (14 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent), and India (6 per cent). The projected rise for 2013 comes after a similar rise of 2.2 per cent in 2012.

Nov. 18, 2013 — Global emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels are set to rise again in 2013, reaching a record high of 36 billion tonnes – according to new figures from the Global Carbon Project, co-led by researchers from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia (UEA).The 2.1 per cent rise projected for 2013 means global emissions from burning fossil fuel are 61 per cent above 1990 levels, the baseline year for the Kyoto Protocol.Prof Corinne Le Quéré of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia led the Global Carbon Budget report. She said: “Governments meeting in Warsaw this week need to agree on how to reverse this trend. Emissions must fall substantially and rapidly if we are to limit global climate change to below two degrees. Additional emissions every year cause further warming and climate change.”Alongside the latest Carbon Budget is the launch of the Carbon Atlas – a new online platform showing the world’s biggest carbon emitters more clearly than ever before. The Carbon Atlas reveals the biggest carbon emitters of 2012, what is driving the growth in China’s emissions, and where the UK is outsourcing its emissions. Users can also compare EU emissions and see which countries are providing the largest environmental services to the rest of the world by removing carbon from the atmosphere.“We are communicating new science,” said Prof Le Quéré. “Everyone can explore their own emissions, and compare them with their neighbouring countries – past, present, and future.”The Global Carbon Budget reveals that the biggest contributors to fossil fuel emissions in 2012 were China (27 per cent), the United States (14 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent), and India (6 per cent). Nov. 18, 2013 — University of Illinois anthropology professor Ripan Malhi looks to DNA to tell the story of how ancient humans first came to the Americas and what happened to them once they were here.He will share some of his findings at the meeting, “Ancient DNA: The First Three Decades,” at The Royal Society in London on Nov. 18 and 19.Malhi, an affiliate of the Institute for Genomic Biology at Illinois, will describe his collaborative approach, which includes working with present-day Native Americans on studies of their genetic history.He and a group of collaborators from the Tsimshian Nation on the northwest coast of British Columbia, for example, recently found a direct ancestral link between ancient human remains in the Prince Rupert Island area and the native peoples living in the region today. How did these groups move to new environments and adapt to their local settings over 15,000 years?”While continuing his work in British Columbia, Malhi also is setting up study sites in California, Guatemala, Mexico and Illinois.”What’s interesting about the northwest coast and California is that these communities were complex hunter-gatherer societies, whereas in Mexico and Guatemala, it’s more communities that transitioned to farming and then experienced the effects of European colonization,” he said.Genomic studies can fill in the blanks on studies that seek to tell the story of life in the Americas before and after European colonization, Malhi said. Researchers may draw the wrong conclusions about human history when looking only at artifacts and language, he said.

Nov. 17, 2013 — If we wanted to count the number of people in a crowd, we could make on the fly estimates, very likely to be imprecise, or we could ask each person to pass through a turnstile. The latter resembles the model that EPFL researchers have used for creating a “DNA reader” that is able to detect the passage of individual DNA molecules through a tiny hole: a nanopore with integrated graphene transistor.The DNA molecules are diluted in a solution containing ions and are driven by an electric field through a membrane with a nanopore. When the molecule goes through the orifice, it provokes a slight perturbation to the field, detectable not only by the modulations in ionic current but also by concomitant modulation in the graphene transistor current. Based on this information, it is possible to determine whether a DNA molecule has passed through the membrane or not.This system is based on a method that has been known for over a dozen years. The original technique was not as reliable since it presented a number of shortcomings such as clogging pores and lack of precision, among others. “We thought that we would be able to solve these problems by creating a membrane as thin as possible while maintaining the orifice’s strength,” said Aleksandra Radenovic from the Laboratory of Nanoscale Biology at EPFL. Together with Floriano Traversi, postdoctoral student, and colleagues from the Laboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures, she came across the material that turned out to be both the strongest and most resilient: graphene, which consists of a single layer of carbon molecules. The strips of graphene or nanoribbons used in the experiment were produced at EPFL, thanks to the work carried out at the Center for Micro Nanotechnology (CMI) and the Center for Electron Microscopy (CIME).”Through an amazing coincidence, continued the researcher, the graphene layer’s thickness measures 0.335 nm, which exactly fits the gap existing between two DNA bases, whereas in the materials used so far there was a 15 nm thickness.” As a result, while previously it was not possible to individually analyze the passage of DNA bases through these “long” tunnels — at a molecular scale -, the new method is likely to provide a much higher precision. Nov. 17, 2013 — Researchers have made the first battery electrode that heals itself, opening a new and potentially commercially viable path for making the next generation of lithium ion batteries for electric cars, cell phones and other devices. The secret is a stretchy polymer that coats the electrode, binds it together and spontaneously heals tiny cracks that develop during battery operation, said the team from Stanford University and the Department of Energy’s (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.They reported the advance in the Nov. 19 issue of Nature Chemistry.”Self-healing is very important for the survival and long lifetimes of animals and plants,” said Chao Wang, a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford and one of two principal authors of the paper. “We want to incorporate this feature into lithium ion batteries so they will have a long lifetime as well.”Chao developed the self-healing polymer in the lab of Stanford Professor Zhenan Bao, whose group has been working on flexible electronic skin for use in robots, sensors, prosthetic limbs and other applications. For the battery project he added tiny nanoparticles of carbon to the polymer so it would conduct electricity.”We found that silicon electrodes lasted 10 times longer when coated with the self-healing polymer, which repaired any cracks within just a few hours,” Bao said.”Their capacity for storing energy is in the practical range now, but we would certainly like to push that,” said Yi Cui, an associate professor at SLAC and Stanford who led the research with Bao. The electrodes worked for about 100 charge-discharge cycles without significantly losing their energy storage capacity. “That’s still quite a way from the goal of about 500 cycles for cell phones and 3,000 cycles for an electric vehicle,” Cui said, “but the promise is there, and from all our data it looks like it’s working.”Researchers worldwide are racing to find ways to store more energy in the negative electrodes of lithium ion batteries to achieve higher performance while reducing weight. One of the most promising electrode materials is silicon; it has a high capacity for soaking up lithium ions from the battery fluid during charging and then releasing them when the battery is put to work.But this high capacity comes at a price: Silicon electrodes swell to three times normal size and shrink back down again each time the battery charges and discharges, and the brittle material soon cracks and falls apart, degrading battery performance. This is a problem for all electrodes in high-capacity batteries, said Hui Wu, a former Stanford postdoc who is now a faculty member at Tsinghua University in Beijing, the other principal author of the paper.To make the self-healing coating, scientists deliberately weakened some of the chemical bonds within polymers — long, chain-like molecules with many identical units. …

Together with colleagues from Halle, he has now succeeded in extending this period by a factor of about a billion to several minutes. “This does not only open up the possibility of designing more compact computer memories, but could also be the basis for the setup of quantum computers,” Wulfhekel says. Quantum computers are based on quantum physics properties of atomic systems. In theory at least, their speed might exceed that of classical computers by several factors.In their experiment, the researchers placed a single holmium atom onto a platinum substrate. At temperatures close to absolute zero, i.e. at about 1 degree Kelvin, they measured the magnetic orientation of the atom using the fine tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. …

Each day in the United States, about 4,000 kids smoke their

first cigarette. Many of them will become daily smokers.


“For teens, it may seem cool to smoke. But tobacco use at a

young age can cause immediate and long-term health problems like cancer,” says Alexander Prokhorov,

M.D., Ph.D.
, director of the Tobacco Outreach Education Program at MD

Anderson.


Recent data shows that the declining number of teen

tobacco users
has stalled. And, the tobacco industry may be to blame.


The industry advertises products, like e-cigarettes,

flavored cigarillos and hookahs, as “safe” and is capturing the attention of

kids.


“All tobacco products are dangerous,” Prokhorov says. “We

need to be proactive about educating our communities, schools and governments

about the dangers of these products.”


Use the facts below to educate kids about the health risks

of trendy tobacco products.


Cigarillos contain

dangerous chemicals
Cigar

use
among high school students rose from 7% in 2009 to 12% in 2011. One

main factor: flavored cigarillos.




Cigarillos, or little cigars, are a cousin to the flavored

cigar. They’re sweet, cheap and come in colorful packages. “They’re especially

appealing to minorities,” Prokhorov says. “The tobacco industry recognizes this

and markets to them.”


You can buy cigarillos individually for less than 70 cents.


Health risks: Cigarillos

may seem fun to kids, but they contain the same dangerous chemicals as regular

cigarettes and cigars. Smoking them can cause heart disease, lung cancer and

lung disease.


Hookahs promote

nicotine addiction
Hookahs are water pipes that create flavored tobacco vapor.

Most people use hookahs at bars and cafes to socialize, but companies also sell

hookahs for personal use.


Health risks: During the average 40-minute hookah

session, users can inhale about 100 times the amount of smoke that’s in a

cigarette.


“The culprit is still nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals,”

Prokhorov says. “Nicotine addiction in youth can develop fast and remain

strong.”


E-cigarettes: a

gateway for other tobacco products
Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are smokeless

electronic devices that the tobacco industry is pitching as harmless.


E-cigarette users inhale a vapor of liquid nicotine similar

to the way a smoker puffs on a cigarette. You can buy the liquid nicotine in a

wide variety flavors.


“Don’t be fooled,” Prokhorov says. “Because e-cigarettes

aren’t regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, we don’t know what chemicals

and additives are really in e-cigarettes, but they could be harmful.”


Health risks: Even

though they don’t use tobacco, e-cigarettes contain nicotine and can easily

become a gateway for teens to try other tobacco products. E-cigarettes also can

put kids at risk for lung cancer and heart disease.

ways to provide the best possible cancer treatment options for our patients as

we work toward our mission of Making Cancer History®. To help with this, we’ve

enlisted a cognitive computing system powered by IBM Watson.


This technology, known as Oncology Expert Advisor™ (OEA),

will soon be used by our doctors and researchers as part of our Moon Shots Program, starting

with our fight against leukemia.

Ultimately, we hope to use the OEA in all of our clinics to help our patients

regardless of their cancer type.


By pulling together and analyzing vast amounts of

information from patient and research databases, the OEA is expected to help our

care teams identify and fine-tune the best possible cancer

treatments
for our patients, while also alerting them to problems that arise

during a patient’s care. The OEA is also expected to help our researchers

advance new discoveries in our fight against cancer.


We recently spoke with Courtney DiNardo, M.D., assistant

professor in Leukemia, who’s been testing the OEA before it debuts in our leukemia

clinic. Here’s what she had to say.


What are the benefits

of using the OEA to organize and collect data about

our patients?
The OEA can extract patient information from various data sources and

synthesize all available medical records into a clear, concise and accurate

synopsis. It can analyze clinical information, medical history, as well as

leukemia-related information, such as specific genetic and molecular features,

and look at all available information in the context of published

evidence-based guidelines and available clinical

trials
.


The OEA also allows us to look at changes in a patient’s

condition over time, enabling us to learn a wealth of information within

seconds and answer complex medical questions with speed, accuracy and

confidence. This has an enormous potential to help us make the best cancer

treatment decisions for our patients and the best research decisions that can

help us make progress in our fight against cancer.


What does the use of

the OEA mean for the future of personalized medicine?


The OEA enables us to provide better, more personalized care through accurate

and evidence-based treatment recommendations based upon a specific patient’s

characteristics as well as his or her leukemia-specific characteristics.


The OEA also can help doctors identify the best cancer

treatment for a particular patient by identifying both the standard treatment options

and clinical trials for which a patient is eligible.


Additionally, by following a patient over time along with

the physician, the OEA helps minimize potential adverse events and optimize

management of the patient’s care at all times.


How – and how soon – will

the OEA change cancer treatment here at MD Anderson?
The OEA is currently in the testing and evaluation stage in MD Anderson’s Department

of Leukemia
. The actual timeline of when this will be available to our

leukemia patients and then expanded to patients with other types of cancer is

not currently known.


We’re hoping that soon, various medical providers, including

physicians, mid-level providers and research teams, will soon be able to use it

to assimilate complex and ever-expanding genomic data and published scientific research.

The OEA then integrates this information with patient data to provide insights

and helps us select the best cancer treatment for each and every patient.


What does the OEA

mean for cancer care beyond MD Anderson?
The OEA has the potential to “democratize” cancer care, meaning that any physician

with Internet access will be able to access the latest scientific knowledge and

MD Anderson’s expertise.


For physicians who aren’t leukemia experts, the OEA can

function as an expert second opinion, allowing them to access the same

knowledge and information we have here. This will enable doctors even in remote

areas to provide the highest standard of care to patients who can’t travel to

Houston for their cancer treatment.


As a doctor, what do

you consider the OEA’s greatest potential?


The ability to integrate patient level data such as additional medical history,

medications, alongside cancer genomics, as well as cancer therapy received and

responses, side

effects
, etc., will provide an unparalleled research platform that can be

used to generate questions, explore hypotheses and provide answers to critical

research questions.


For example, the OEA will also enable us to analyze why

certain patients respond to certain cancer treatments and why particular patients

experience certain side effects, using a research platform that is currently not

available. This gives us the potential to really learn from the vast amount of

information we currently have, and use it to advance cancer research and to benefit

each individual patient.


I’m excited about the possibilities for accelerating new

research and providing the most effective treatments and cures for our patients.

Ivy is 4 months old!



Slow down. Just please slow down a bit, little Ivy. You’re changing too fast!


New tricks this month:



  • laughing (for real)

  • grabbing onto things, holding them, and putting them in her mouth

  • rolling over

  • *not* nursing when she’s nursing–this girl is super distracted by anything

  • I think she’s beginning to recognize the word “nurse”

  • pottying really well–almost every time I bring her to the potty, she will go

  • wiggling and squirming and scooting herself around. No more leaving her unattended on the bed!


Ivy loves to stand up and watch what’s going on. She will also jump up and down (okay, more like standing up and then sitting down) which sends Zari into paroxysms of laughter. She loves playing with her siblings as long as they are not squishing her. Which happens a lot, unfortunately.


Ivy helps put Inga to bed almost every time now. This is our routine:



Ivy is big enough for a back carry now. She’s gone on some walks in the Ergo. I’ve also put her in the stroller a few times.


Ivy loves any form of water: shower, baths, swimming pools, sprinklers. We’ve taken her swimming a lot this last month. Never a single squawk, no matter the water temperature.

I retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 26 years as a fighter pilot. After that, I served another 15 years as a high school Air Force Junior ROTC instructor. My military service included two tours in Vietnam and combat action in Operation Desert Storm, where I served as the commander of the unit that flew the Fii7A stealth fighter.


But my latest battle came in February 2013, when, at age 67, I received a prostate cancer diagnosis.


I had watched my Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test scores climb slowly over several years, but a dramatic increase in a recent physical exam had motivated me to have a biopsy. The biopsy came back positive for prostate cancer.


Choosing my prostate cancer treatment

I diligently evaluated my prostate cancer treatment options. I discussed a variety of cancer treatments with my primary care physician, my urologist, a radiation oncologist and other men who had experienced prostate cancer. But I was not particularly pleased with what I heard regarding the options available to me in my hometown.


I kept going back to an option I had discovered on the website for MD Anderson: proton therapy.

Unfortunately, I could not find anyone that I could talk to face-to-face about proton therapy. So my wife Ann and I decided to visit MD Anderson to get a second opinion about my prostate cancer diagnosis and to learn all we could about proton therapy.


Why proton therapy was the right choice for me

As an Air Force stealth fighter aviator during Desert Storm, I was tasked with employing a new and innovative technology, the F-117A, in a dangerous, unforgiving environment. There were naysayers who said the aircraft was too expensive, but I knew that it would enable bombs to reach targets without collateral damage to civilians and allow us to return home safely.


When I flew into the teeth of battle with the explosions of antiaircraft artillery and surface to air missiles raging about me, I knew I was extremely fortunate to be in that stealth aircraft.


Likewise, when I found MD Anderson and proton therapy, I knew my treatment team could attack my tumor with precision and destroy that target with maximum effect and minimal, if any, side effects. As a patient faced with a disease that could kill me, I wanted to go into that fight with the most capable treatment and one that will cause minimal if any collateral damage to other parts of my body.


Not only did I want to survive, but I wanted to preserve my quality of life. And through proton therapy I did just that. Throughout my treatment, I increased my walking to three or four miles a day and spent a couple of hours at the gym at least three times a week.

Most importantly, I completed my prostate cancer treatment and was declared cancer-free in early November 2013.


In both the Air Force and at MD Anderson, I was blessed that people had shown the initiative and determination to pursue new and evolving technologies that would benefit humanity and not base that decision solely on the cost.


I decided to come to MD Anderson because I knew it would offer the best treatment available. What I didn’t know was that this journey would also lead me to a caring, professional and competent medical team that not only is the best at what they do, but also inspired, comforted and cared for me in ways I never imagined possible.
