Home » No Win No Fee » Latest Personal Injury News » 2013 » 11 » Tayside firm fined after electrician’s accidentTayside firm fined after electrician’s accidentA Scottish company has been fined after a worker suffered burns to his face, hands and arms while carrying out regular electrical tests.Gordon Roberts, aged 38 at the time of the incident on December 2nd 2010, had to spend more than a week in hospital because of his injuries, but was lucky to survive and returned to work two months later after making a full recovery.Dundee Sheriff Court was told that Mr Roberts, an employee of McGill Electrical, was testing an electricity substation on the premises of a manufacturing company in Dundee when he climbed a stepladder to take off bolted covers, which guarded access against live conductors he was due to test.But as he did this, a corner of the cover appeared to come into contact with electrical currents and this caused an arc flashover, which struck Mr Roberts.While a colleague was in the vicinity, he did not see the incident, but reported that all the lights went out and the room filled with smoke.Luckily, Mr Roberts was able to walk out of the substation unaided and his co-worker used snow surrounding the area to cool down burns before the ambulance arrived, something that aided his long-term recovery chances.When the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was made aware of the incident, it launched an investigation that found a suitable risk assessment had not taken place and McGill Electrical failed to ensure that distribution boards were de-energised during the removal of covers.For its part in the accident, McGill Electrical was fined £2,000 after it pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.After the case finished, HSE inspector Mac Young said: “This incident was wholly preventable. Nov. 21, 2013 — A team led by UC San Francisco (UCSF) scientists has identified the disruption of a single type of cell — in a particular brain region and at a particular time in brain development — as a significant factor in the emergence of autism.The finding, reported in the Nov. 21 issue of Cell, was made with techniques developed only within the last few years and marks a turning point in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) research.Large-scale gene-sequencing projects are revealing hundreds of autism-associated genes. Scientists have begun to leverage new methods to decipher how mutations in these disparate genes might converge to exert their effects in the developing brain.The new research focused on just nine genes, those most strongly associated with autism in recent sequencing studies, and investigated their effects using precise maps of gene expression during human brain development.Led by Jeremy Willsey, a graduate student in the laboratory of senior author Matthew W. State, MD, PhD, of UCSF, the group showed that this set of genes contributes to abnormalities in brain cells known as cortical projection neurons in the deepest layers of the developing prefrontal cortex, during the middle period of fetal development.Though a range of developmental scenarios in multiple brain regions is surely at work in ASDs, the researchers said the ability to place these specific genetic mutations in one specific set of cells — among hundreds of cell types in the brain, and at a specific point in human development — is a critical step in beginning to understand how autism comes about.”Given the small subset of autism genes we studied, I had no expectation that we would see the degree of spatiotemporal convergence that we saw,” said State, an international authority on the genetics of neurodevelopmental disorders.”This strongly suggests that, though there are hundreds of autism risk genes, the number of underlying biological mechanisms will be far fewer,” he said. “This is a very important clue to advance precision medicine for autism toward the development of personalized and targeted therapies.”Complex Genetic Architecture of ASDsASDs, which are marked by deficits in social interaction and language development, as well as by repetitive behaviors and/or restricted interests, are known to have a strong genetic component.But these disorders are exceedingly complex, with considerable variation in symptoms and severity, and little consistency in the mutations among affected individuals.Instead, with the rise of new sequencing methods over the past several years, researchers have identified many rare, non-inherited, spontaneous mutations that appear to act in combination with other genetic and non-genetic factors to cause ASDs. According to some estimates, mutations in as many as 1,000 genes could play a role in the development of these disorders.While researchers have been heartened that specific genes are now rapidly being tied to ASDs, State said the complex genetic architecture of ASDs is also proving to be challenging.”If there are 1,000 genes in the population that can contribute to risk in varying degrees and each has multiple developmental functions, it is not immediately obvious how to move forward to determine what is specifically related to autism,” State said. “Without this, it is very difficult to think about how to develop new and better medications,” he said.Focusing on Nine GenesTo begin to grapple with those questions, the researchers involved in the new study first selected as “seeds” the nine genes that have been most strongly tied to ASDs in recent sequencing research from their labs and others.Importantly, these nine genes were chosen solely because of the statistical evidence for a relationship to ASDs, not because their function was known to fit a theory of the cause of ASDs. “We asked where the leads take us, without any preconceived idea about where they should take us,” said State.The team then took advantage of BrainSpan, a digital atlas assembled by a large research consortium, including co-author Nenad Šestan, MD, PhD, and colleagues at Yale School of Medicine. Based on donated brain specimens, BrainSpan documents how and where genes are expressed in the human brain over the lifespan.The scientists, who also included Bernie Devlin, PhD, of The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; Kathryn Roeder, PhD, of Carnegie-Mellon University; and James Noonan, PhD, of Yale School of Medicine, used this tool to investigate when and where the nine seed genes join up with other genes in “co-expression networks” to wire up the brain or maintain its function.The resulting co-expression networks were then tested using a variety of pre-determined criteria to see whether they showed additional evidence of being related to ASDs. …

It was smaller — as small as it has ever been in recent history — from 3-5,000 years ago, according to scientists who studied the ice sheet’s history using a new technique they developed for interpreting the Arctic fossil record.”What’s really interesting about this is that on land, the atmosphere was warmest between 9,000 and 5,000 years ago, maybe as late as 4,000 years ago. The oceans, on the other hand, were warmest between 5-3,000 years ago,” said Jason Briner, PhD, University at Buffalo associate professor of geology, who led the study.”What it tells us is that the ice sheets might really respond to ocean temperatures,” he said. “It’s a clue to what might happen in the future as the Earth continues to warm.”The findings appeared online on Nov. 22 in the journal Geology. Briner’s team included Darrell Kaufman, an organic geochemist from Northern Arizona University; Ole Bennike, a clam taxonomist from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland; and Matthew Kosnik, a statistician from Australia’s Macquarie University.The study is important not only for illuminating the history of Greenland’s ice sheet, but for providing geologists with an important new tool: A method of using Arctic fossils to deduce when glaciers were smaller than they are today.Scientists have many techniques for figuring out when ice sheets were larger, but few for the opposite scenario.”Traditional approaches have a difficult time identifying when ice sheets were smaller,” Briner said. “The outcome of our work is that we now have a tool that allows us to see how the ice sheet responded to past times that were as warm or warmer than present — times analogous to today and the near future.”The technique the scientists developed involves dating fossils in piles of debris found at the edge of glaciers.To elaborate: Growing ice sheets are like bulldozers, pushing rocks, boulders and other detritus into heaps of rubble called moraines.Because glaciers only do this plowing when they’re getting bigger, logic dictates that rocks or fossils found in a moraine must have been scooped up at a time when the associated glacier was older and smaller.So if a moraine contains fossils from 3,000 years ago, that means the glacier was growing — and smaller than it is today — 3,000 years ago.This is exactly what the scientists saw in Greenland: They looked at 250 ancient clams from moraines in three western regions, and discovered that most of the fossils were between 3-5,000 years old.The finding suggests that this was the period when the ice sheet’s western extent was at its smallest in recent history, Briner said.”Because we see the most shells dating to the 5-3000-year period, we think that this is when the most land was ice-free, when large layers of mud and fossils were allowed to accumulate before the glacier came and bulldozed them up,” he said.Because radiocarbon dating is expensive, Briner and his colleagues found another way to trace the age of their fossils.Their solution was to look at the structure of amino acids — the building blocks of proteins — in the fossils of ancient clams. Amino acids come in two orientations that are mirror images of each other, known as D and L, and living organisms generally keep their amino acids in an L configuration.When organisms die, however, the amino acids begin to flip. In dead clams, for example, D forms of aspartic acid start turning to L’s.Because this shift takes place slowly over time, the ratio of D’s to L’s in a fossil is a giveaway of its age.Knowing this, Briner’s research team matched D and L ratios in 20 Arctic clamshells to their radiocarbon-dated ages to generate a scale showing which ratios corresponded with which ages. …

Nov. 20, 2013 — A Florida State University scientist has uncovered what may be the first recognized example of ancient Martian crust.The work of Munir Humayun — a professor in FSU’s Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science and a researcher at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) — is based on an analysis of a 4.4 billion-year-old Martian meteorite that was unearthed by Bedouin tribesmen in the Sahara desert. The rock (NWA 7533) may be the first recognized sample of ancient Martian crust and holds a wealth of information about the origin and age of the Red Planet’s crust.Humayun’s groundbreaking discoveries about the crust and what it reveals about the Red Planet’s origins will be published in the journal Nature.In order to detect minute amounts of chemicals in this meteorite, Humayun and his collaborators performed complex analysis on the meteorite using an array of highly sophisticated mass spectrometers in the MagLab’s geochemistry department. High concentrations of trace metals such as iridium, an element that indicates meteoritic bombardment, showed that this meteorite came from the elusive cratered area of Mars’ southern highlands.”This cratered terrain has been long thought to hold the keys to Mars’ birth and early childhood,” Humayun said.While craters cover more than half of Mars, this is the first meteoric sample to come from this area and the first time researchers are able to understand Mars’ early crustal growth.Using the chemical information found in pieces of soil contained in the meteorite, the researchers were able to calculate the thickness of Mars’ crust. Their calculation aligned with estimates from independent spacecraft measurements and confirms that Mars did not experience a giant impact that melted the entire planet in its early history.Using a powerful microprobe at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, the team dated special crystals within the meteorite — called zircons — at an astounding 4.4 billion years old.”This date is about 100 million years after the first dust condensed in the solar system,” Humayun said. “We now know that Mars had a crust within the first 100 million years of the start of planet building, and that Mars’ crust formed concurrently with the oldest crusts on Earth and the Moon.”Humayun and his collaborators hypothesize that these trailblazing discoveries are just the tip of the iceberg of what continued research on this unique meteorite will uncover. Nov. 19, 2013 — Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have demonstrated in the laboratory a lithium-sulfur (Li/S) battery that has more than twice the specific energy of lithium-ion batteries, and that lasts for more than 1,500 cycles of charge-discharge with minimal decay of the battery’s capacity. This is the longest cycle life reported so far for any lithium-sulfur battery.A schematic of a lithium-sulfur battery with SEM photo of silicon-graphene oxide material.Demand for high-performance batteries for electric and hybrid electric vehicles capable of matching the range and power of the combustion engine encourages scientists to develop new battery chemistries that could deliver more power and energy than lithium-ion batteries, currently the best performing battery chemistry in the marketplace.For electric vehicles to have a 300-mile range, the battery should provide a cell-level specific energy of 350 to 400 Watt-hours/kilogram (Wh/kg). This would require almost double the specific energy (about 200 Wh/kg) of current lithium-ion batteries. The batteries would also need to have at least 1,000, and preferably 1,500 charge-discharge cycles without showing a noticeable power or energy storage capacity loss.”Our cells may provide a substantial opportunity for the development of zero-emission vehicles with a driving range similar to that of gasoline vehicles,” says Elton Cairns, of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division (EETD) at Berkeley Lab.The battery initially showed an estimated cell-specific energy of more than 500 Wh/kg and it maintained it at >300 Wh/kg after 1,000 cycles — much higher than that of currently available lithium-ion cells.The team is now seeking support for the continuing development of the Li/S cell, including higher sulfur utilization, operation under extreme conditions, and scale-up. Partnerships with industry are being sought. The next steps in the development are to further increase the cell energy density, improve cell performance under extreme conditions, and scale up to larger cells.The results were reported in the journal Nano Letters, in a paper authored by Min-Kyu Song (Molecular Foundry, Berkeley Lab), Yuegang Zhang (Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Cairns (Environmental Energy Technologies Division, Berkeley Lab). The research was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science and a University of California Proof of Concept Award.

Home » No Win No Fee » Latest Personal Injury News » 2013 » 11 » Bolton worker could receive compensation after injuriesBolton worker could receive compensation after injuriesA worker at a recycling firm in Bolton could be in line to receive compensation after he was badly injured by a steel beam.The unnamed 52-year-old from Horwich was stood next to a forklift truck in the outside section of J Doyle’s yard on Gaskell Street on July 18th 2012 when the incident took place.Trafford Magistrates’ Court was told that the staff member had been attempting to load a steel beam into an empty skip so it could be sent out to a customer, but when he did this he was struck by the object as it fell off the legs of a forklift truck.Such was the extent of the injuries, the worker was rushed to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured ankle, a deep laceration to his shin, as well as bruising and swelling to his skin, ankle and foot.The man was off work for three months and now walks with a permanent limp.After hearing of the incident, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched an investigation and found work had not been planned effectively by bosses at the firm – something evidenced by the fact a 100 kg steel beam had been loaded by a forklift truck.J Doyle was fined £2,000 and told to pay prosecution costs of £1,500 after he pleaded guilty to breaching the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.Commenting after the trial, HSE inspector Emily Osborne said: “The injuries suffered by J Doyle’s employee are still affecting him today, more than a year after the incident and have caused him a considerable amount of pain.”The firm should never have allowed a long steel beam, weighing over 100 kg, to be lifted on a forklift truck in this dangerous way. Global carbon emissions set to reach record 36 billion tons in 2013



Global emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels are set to rise again in 2013, reaching a record high of 36 billion tons – according to new figures from the Global Carbon Project. The biggest contributors to fossil fuel emissions in 2012 were China (27 per cent), the United States (14 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent), and India (6 per cent). The projected rise for 2013 comes after a similar rise of 2.2 per cent in 2012.

She said: “Governments meeting in Warsaw this week need to agree on how to reverse this trend. Additional emissions every year cause further warming and climate change.”Alongside the latest Carbon Budget is the launch of the Carbon Atlas – a new online platform showing the world’s biggest carbon emitters more clearly than ever before. Each day in the United States, about 4,000 kids smoke their

first cigarette. Many of them will become daily smokers.


“For teens, it may seem cool to smoke. But tobacco use at a

young age can cause immediate and long-term health problems like cancer,” says Alexander Prokhorov,

M.D., Ph.D.
, director of the Tobacco Outreach Education Program at MD

Anderson.


Recent data shows that the declining number of teen

tobacco users
has stalled. And, the tobacco industry may be to blame.


The industry advertises products, like e-cigarettes,

flavored cigarillos and hookahs, as “safe” and is capturing the attention of

kids.


“All tobacco products are dangerous,” Prokhorov says. “We

need to be proactive about educating our communities, schools and governments

about the dangers of these products.”


Use the facts below to educate kids about the health risks

of trendy tobacco products.


Cigarillos contain

dangerous chemicals
Cigar

use
among high school students rose from 7% in 2009 to 12% in 2011. One

main factor: flavored cigarillos.




Cigarillos, or little cigars, are a cousin to the flavored

cigar. They’re sweet, cheap and come in colorful packages. “They’re especially

appealing to minorities,” Prokhorov says. “The tobacco industry recognizes this

and markets to them.”


You can buy cigarillos individually for less than 70 cents.


Health risks: Cigarillos

may seem fun to kids, but they contain the same dangerous chemicals as regular

cigarettes and cigars. Smoking them can cause heart disease, lung cancer and

lung disease.


Hookahs promote

nicotine addiction
Hookahs are water pipes that create flavored tobacco vapor.

Most people use hookahs at bars and cafes to socialize, but companies also sell

hookahs for personal use.


Health risks: During the average 40-minute hookah

session, users can inhale about 100 times the amount of smoke that’s in a

cigarette.


“The culprit is still nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals,”

Prokhorov says. “Nicotine addiction in youth can develop fast and remain

strong.”


E-cigarettes: a

gateway for other tobacco products
Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are smokeless

electronic devices that the tobacco industry is pitching as harmless.


E-cigarette users inhale a vapor of liquid nicotine similar

to the way a smoker puffs on a cigarette. You can buy the liquid nicotine in a

wide variety flavors.


“Don’t be fooled,” Prokhorov says. “Because e-cigarettes

aren’t regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, we don’t know what chemicals

and additives are really in e-cigarettes, but they could be harmful.”


Health risks: Even

though they don’t use tobacco, e-cigarettes contain nicotine and can easily

become a gateway for teens to try other tobacco products. E-cigarettes also can

put kids at risk for lung cancer and heart disease.

DiNardo.jpg At MD Anderson, we’re constantly looking for innovative new

ways to provide the best possible cancer treatment options for our patients as

we work toward our mission of Making Cancer History®. To help with this, we’ve

enlisted a cognitive computing system powered by IBM Watson.


This technology, known as Oncology Expert Advisor™ (OEA),

will soon be used by our doctors and researchers as part of our Moon Shots Program, starting

with our fight against leukemia.

Ultimately, we hope to use the OEA in all of our clinics to help our patients

regardless of their cancer type.


By pulling together and analyzing vast amounts of

information from patient and research databases, the OEA is expected to help our

care teams identify and fine-tune the best possible cancer

treatments
for our patients, while also alerting them to problems that arise

during a patient’s care. The OEA is also expected to help our researchers

advance new discoveries in our fight against cancer.


We recently spoke with Courtney DiNardo, M.D., assistant

professor in Leukemia, who’s been testing the OEA before it debuts in our leukemia

clinic. Here’s what she had to say.


What are the benefits

of using the OEA to organize and collect data about

our patients?
The OEA can extract patient information from various data sources and

synthesize all available medical records into a clear, concise and accurate

synopsis. It can analyze clinical information, medical history, as well as

leukemia-related information, such as specific genetic and molecular features,

and look at all available information in the context of published

evidence-based guidelines and available clinical

trials
.


The OEA also allows us to look at changes in a patient’s

condition over time, enabling us to learn a wealth of information within

seconds and answer complex medical questions with speed, accuracy and

confidence. This has an enormous potential to help us make the best cancer

treatment decisions for our patients and the best research decisions that can

help us make progress in our fight against cancer.


What does the use of

the OEA mean for the future of personalized medicine?


The OEA enables us to provide better, more personalized care through accurate

and evidence-based treatment recommendations based upon a specific patient’s

characteristics as well as his or her leukemia-specific characteristics.


The OEA also can help doctors identify the best cancer

treatment for a particular patient by identifying both the standard treatment options

and clinical trials for which a patient is eligible.


Additionally, by following a patient over time along with

the physician, the OEA helps minimize potential adverse events and optimize

management of the patient’s care at all times.


How – and how soon – will

the OEA change cancer treatment here at MD Anderson?
The OEA is currently in the testing and evaluation stage in MD Anderson’s Department

of Leukemia
. The actual timeline of when this will be available to our

leukemia patients and then expanded to patients with other types of cancer is

not currently known.


We’re hoping that soon, various medical providers, including

physicians, mid-level providers and research teams, will soon be able to use it

to assimilate complex and ever-expanding genomic data and published scientific research.

The OEA then integrates this information with patient data to provide insights

and helps us select the best cancer treatment for each and every patient.


What does the OEA

mean for cancer care beyond MD Anderson?
The OEA has the potential to “democratize” cancer care, meaning that any physician

with Internet access will be able to access the latest scientific knowledge and

MD Anderson’s expertise.


For physicians who aren’t leukemia experts, the OEA can

function as an expert second opinion, allowing them to access the same

knowledge and information we have here. This will enable doctors even in remote

areas to provide the highest standard of care to patients who can’t travel to

Houston for their cancer treatment.


As a doctor, what do

you consider the OEA’s greatest potential?


The ability to integrate patient level data such as additional medical history,

medications, alongside cancer genomics, as well as cancer therapy received and

responses, side

effects
, etc., will provide an unparalleled research platform that can be

used to generate questions, explore hypotheses and provide answers to critical

research questions.


For example, the OEA will also enable us to analyze why

certain patients respond to certain cancer treatments and why particular patients

experience certain side effects, using a research platform that is currently not

available. This gives us the potential to really learn from the vast amount of

information we currently have, and use it to advance cancer research and to benefit

each individual patient.


I’m excited about the possibilities for accelerating new

research and providing the most effective treatments and cures for our patients.

Is life insurance available to diabetics?




In a previous post, we discussed how it is possible for survivors of a critical or long-term illness like cancer to purchase a life insurance policy. Details vary by insurer, but most survivors of critical illnesses can qualify for a life insurance policy if they are currently in good heath and have little risk of developing the disease again. While this eligibility is great for people who are no longer dealing with an ailment, where does this leave individuals who have a chronic disease like diabetes?


Having diabetes will not automatically disqualify you from obtaining a life insurance policy, but you may have to do some digging to find one with affordable premiums. The American Diabetes Association recommends that any diabetic on the hunt for a life insurance policy should consider the following:



  • Consulting with an independent agent may be beneficial – You should look for an agent who is experienced in working with individuals with "impaired risk." They will know which life insurance companies may be more likely to offer you a policy.

Ivy is 4 months old!



Slow down. Just please slow down a bit, little Ivy. You’re changing too fast!


New tricks this month:



  • laughing (for real)

  • grabbing onto things, holding them, and putting them in her mouth

  • rolling over

  • *not* nursing when she’s nursing–this girl is super distracted by anything

  • I think she’s beginning to recognize the word “nurse”

  • pottying really well–almost every time I bring her to the potty, she will go

  • wiggling and squirming and scooting herself around. No more leaving her unattended on the bed!


Ivy loves to stand up and watch what’s going on. She will also jump up and down (okay, more like standing up and then sitting down) which sends Zari into paroxysms of laughter. She loves playing with her siblings as long as they are not squishing her. Which happens a lot, unfortunately.


Ivy helps put Inga to bed almost every time now. This is our routine:



Ivy is big enough for a back carry now. She’s gone on some walks in the Ergo. I’ve also put her in the stroller a few times.


Ivy loves any form of water: shower, baths, swimming pools, sprinklers. We’ve taken her swimming a lot this last month. Never a single squawk, no matter the water temperature.

Study: Gardening and DIY projects can boost heart health




Gardening and simple tasks around the house can lead to a longer life, according to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Researchers from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences found that adults over the age of 60 who engaged in tasks such as gardening, home maintenance or automotive repair have better overall cardiovascular health.


According to the study's lead investigator, Elin Ekblom-Bak, the key to developing and maintaining good heart health is staying on your feet and avoiding sitting as much as possible.


"Sitting is mainly replacing time you spend in daily activity and vice versa," Ekblom-Bak said in a press release. "The results of this study showed that activities of daily life are as important as regular intentional exercise for older adults for cardiovascular health and longevity."


In the analysis, 3,800 men and women born in 1937 or 1938 were asked about their lifestyle, which included information about their diet and how physically active they were. The researchers also took blood samples to measure sugar and fat levels. Over the course of the 12-year trial, 476 participants either died from or experienced a heart attack or stoke. Those in the group who said that they moved regularly reduced their risk of being affected by these conditions by 30 percent.


Ekblom-Bak also noted in the press release that physicians should encourage their older patients to engage in these basic tasks, especially if they are no longer able to engage in vigorous exercise.

Nov. 8, 2013 — An international team of high-energy physicists says the discovery of an electrically charged subatomic particle called Zc(4020) is a sign that they have begun to unveil a whole new family of four-quark objects.The Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII) collaboration, which includes scientists from UH Mānoa, previously announced the discovery of a mysterious four-quark particle called Zc(3900) in April 2013.”While quarks have long been known to bind together in groups of twos or threes, these new results seem to be quickly opening the door to a previously elusive type of four-quark matter,” said Frederick Harris, a professor of physics and astronomy at UH Mānoa, and a spokesman for the BESIII experiment. “The unique data sample collected by the BESIII collaboration has continued to yield a stream of clues about the nature of multi-quark objects.”The recent breakthroughs by the BESIII collaboration have come about through a dedicated study of the byproducts of the anomalous Y(4260) particle.Using the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII) in China, scientists tuned the energy at which electrons and positrons annihilate matter to 4260 MeV, which corresponds to the mass of the Y(4260) particle. The BESIII Collaboration used this method to directly produce and collect large samples of the particle’s byproducts, or decays.This experimental method allowed the BESIII collaboration to first observe the Zc(3900) and then the Zc(4020). Also recently spotted in the decays is the electrically neutral X(3872), a particle that has been experimentally established for more than 10 years, and has long been suspected to be a four-quark object.”The year 2013 has so far been an exciting one for the BESIII experiment,” Harris said. “Using decays of the Y(4260), a family of four-quark objects has begun to appear. While the theoretical picture remains to be finalized, more and more clues are suggesting that we are witnessing new forms of matter. And while a new ‘zoo’ of mysterious particles is emerging, it seems a new classification system may soon be at hand to understand it.”About the BESIII ExperimentThe Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII) experiment at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider is composed of about 350 physicists from 50 institutions in 11 countries. U.S. groups include Carnegie Mellon University, Indiana University, The University of Minnesota, The University of Rochester, as well as physicists in the High Energy Physics Group, in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.
