Week in FX Europe – BoE Shake Up No Match For Yellen’s FOMC

Week in FX Europe – BoE Shake Up No Match For Yellen’s FOMC

via MarketPulse:

Geopolitical risk continues to be high after Crimea’s overtly pro-Russian vote in Sunday’s referendum. The fact that energy and other commodities had high stocks before the Ukraine-Russian turmoil decreased the effect that it had on prices. Russian stock markets where the hardest hit this week with western counterparts unfazed and even boosted by President Putin’s words about no further Ukrainian region expected to join. The EUR/USD stood mostly in a very tight range around 1.39 before the US Federal Reserve’s FOMC.

The Bank of England governor announced his shake up of the Old Lady. Answering two of the biggest complaints about the central bank Carney appointed a new Chief Economist and a Deputy of Banks and Markets. The fact that the market was calling out the BoE for being out of touch with the economy and having the wrong forecasts explains the first appointment. The biggest loser in the shake up was MPC member Fisher who oversaw one of the people who have been suspended in the ongoing FX manipulation probe. This probably means that Fisher will be out when his term ends.

Sanctions against Russia continue to rise. The US has used the more aggressive language, but in the end both the EU and the US have been limited to sanctions on individuals in the periphery of the conflict and no direct economic sanctions for Russia. The US has nothing to lose as trade with Russia is small. Russia does not hold that much US debt that could hurt the US if they decide to sell. Europe on the other hand has a much co-dependant relationship with Russia. The Europe needs Russian energy. Germany in particular accounts for most Russian exports to Europe. Russian in exchange needs the profits from those energy exports to sustain its economy. German sanctions would hurt Russia, but would also impact the rate of growth of the economy and Europe as the teuton nation is the engine of the region.

The Janet Yellen era at the United States Federal Reserve has officially begun. Her first Federal Open Market Committee was memorable. The actual FOMC statement was what the market has come to expect from central bank communication: Optimistic, but cautious. The expected $10 billion added taper continues the trend set by Bernanke in the December FOMC. What took markets by surprise was Mrs Yellen first post FOMC press conference.

The Fed chair said that the quantitative easing program would could end by fall if the current pace continues to be constant and rates could be higher six months after that. Nowhere in the FOMC statement did that timeline appear. In fact the actual release foresaw low rates for “considerable time”. Yellen surprised by giving a closer date that most analyst expected given other Fed members previous statements.

What begun last summer with another apparent off script comment from Ben Bernanke regarding tapering seems to be moving forward. The era of record low rates around the world seems to be over. Emerging markets were particularly hard-hit by the tapering announcement. This time around the USD has made big gains against all currencies across the board.

The Fed chair word’s dropped the EUR/USD below the 1.39 range and well into 1.37. It has seen retreated slightly to above 1.38. Deflation and the strong euro continue to be a concern for the European Central Bank. Thanks to Yellen they have to focus only on deflation for now.

Local generation, better data boost energy security

Local generation, better data boost energy security

via Greenbang:

There is little doubt that utilities today face a major challenge in maintaining sustained access to energy and in safeguarding its long-term delivery to consumers. In light of this inescapable reality, it is encouraging to see the Technology Strategy Board show support for local clean energy generation with its latest program, through which it will invest up to £11 million to support research and development to stimulate innovation in localized energy systems.

While currently geared at stimulating innovation among small businesses, the initiative could very successfully be adapted to drive progress across the entire country. With the smart meter rollout imminent and the smart energy market expected to grow by roughly 30 per cent each year across the EU, innovation in this space is most welcome, and quite frankly necessary for any economy looking to keep up with this fast pace of innovation.

Grid operators, who are already tasked with ensuring the safe, secure, reliable flow of power to consumers, will face many new challenges as the grid gets linked to a growing number of localized energy networks. To overcome these difficulties and successfully manage the integration of new technologies onto the grid, energy retailers will rely on smart-grid technology, and on the network management systems that will allow them to balance demand and supply more effectively.

An intelligent grid

As dynamic, intricately connected webs, utility networks present unique engineering and safety challenges that make them particularly complex to manage. To facilitate the move toward localized power generation and help support the accelerating adoption of renewable energy sources, grid operators will need to adapt their network infrastructure and IT resources to keep networks running smoothly even as new energy sources are added to them.

For energy utilities, the key to modernizing their network management systems lies in the data they will collect and analyze from the smart grid. This will include not only consolidating the vast amount of information that next-generation grids will provide them, but also quickly converting this into valuable network insight.

With the heightened awareness of network behavior they will gain with the smart grid, operators can then take a more proactive approach to managing energy flow and deliver a more stable and reliable service to their customers.

Applied to localized power generation sites, this means that the grid can provide utilities with data-driven insight into network behavior that will allow them to accommodate flow disruptions caused once these new energy sources are added to the grid. To add to this, data analytics tools can help energy retailers optimize distribution to keep wastage to an absolute minimum.

Putting data to good use

As the smart grid rollout takes form, utilities will begin collecting and analyzing information from a growing number of data points to better understand how voltage is being distributed throughout their networks. Modern network management systems can help utilities make the most of the information they collect from charging stations by allowing them to automatically adapt demand response to network conditions in near real-time.

With the ability to automatically balance power supply and demand in the grid, utilities will be able to tailor their energy distribution strategy to match real-world network behavior, and open the door to new levels of power efficiency. Once they can redirect flow as required in this way, energy retailers can drastically reduce the risk of localized overloading or outages. This level of control will help utilities avoid overburdening transformers to the point of failure, and preclude the significant damage to network assets that these malfunctions can cause.

Ultimately, network management systems will allow energy utilities to unite complex processes across the grid to optimize load distribution, which will in turn help them accommodate the addition of major new energy sources such as localized generation centers and renewables. These solutions can also provide utilities with continuous updates on the status of their network assets, and therefore give them a valuable head-start on crucial maintenance and repair works.

Making a meaningful change

The search for more affordable and sustainable forms of energy production such as green power initiatives and renewables will continue to gain momentum. As the energy gatekeepers for the general public, utilities will need to facilitate change while maintaining a high standard of service.

An intelligent energy management strategy will be vital for grid operators as they work to achieve this. The data analytics tools and cutting-edge IT applications that support their smart grid operations will help them make sure green technologies integrate seamlessly with the national power infrastructure and provide the public with a meaningful and reliable energy supply.

This was a guest post and an exclusive from Mike Ballard, Oracle’s senior director of utilities strategy EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa).

Automation program aims to stabilize UK grid

Automation program aims to stabilize UK grid

via Greenbang:

A new smart-grid program being launched in the UK aims to help stabilize the power grid as more renewable energy sources come online.

Honeywell and power management company Stor Generation Ltd. are working with commercial and industrial users to temporarily trim their energy consumption when electricity demand threatens to overwhelm the grid.

Under the program, Stor Generation will pay companies to reduce their consumption using Honeywell’s automated demand response (ADR) technology. The technology automates short-term changes that reduce energy use by heating and cooling equipment, lighting and other building systems.

“The technology required to avoid a megawatt of consumption costs a fraction of that needed to pump out an additional megawatt,” said Jeremy Eaton, vice president of Honeywell Smart Grid Solutions. “From a cost-benefit standpoint, ADR is the most prudent option for reducing energy use and is the most clean, sustainable path to energy reliability.”

“Honeywell’s solution enables us to offer clients a new source of revenue, with little or no impact on a building’s operation or occupants,” said Azad Camyab, CEO of Stor Generation. “It also provides clients with near real-time visualization of energy consumption and gives them the ability to reduce costs by offering site load flexibility.”

Stick to an approach

If you have a valid setup idea and then if you stick to it for long period of time it works.

Sticking with a setup idea for long period allows you to master it and fine tune things.

Sticking with an approach does not mean sticking to exact parameters of a scan or trading mix but it means broadly keeping your logic behind the trade constant.

If your approach is breakout based, if you stick with it, over months , trades, years you gain valuable insight in to the setup and you will become good at it or will know when to be aggressive and when to be cautious with your setup.

One of the constant temptation in trading is to completely abandon an approach and jump at every new idea you hear about or read about in book or on some site. The grass is always greener on other side. People who constantly do it gather no enduring edge.

One of the other thing wonderful about the market is that most of the approaches that work are in public domain and have been around for hundreds of years.

Breakouts based trading has been around since markets started.

Pullback based trading has been around since markets started.

Growth investing has been around since market started.

Value investing has been around since market started.

Contrarian investing has been around for hundreds of years.

Trend following has been around for years.

For a short term traders the two most common approaches are breakouts and pullbacks. Traders have developed variations of these two approaches. Those variations involve small nuances. But the basic setup remains intact. 95% breakout +5% nuance or 95% pullback with 5% nuance is the most common approach.

Most people do not have patience to stay with an approach. They give up at first hint of trouble or when things don’t work for a period of time they abandon the complete approach.

As a trader you have to be willing to persist with an approach, many trades may not work, in a year there will be months when you will feel miserable but if you follow a setup by end of the year you might be more than compensate for that period.

Stick with an approach for sufficient number of trades or months.

One of the benefit of methods traded here is that you will have very little draw downs if you follow my approach. If you see over years the approach has been to take as little risk as possible and yet compound the money.

Drawdowns can drain your energy and put you offtrack. Low drawdown methods allow you to stick with method and gain confidence.

New light on dark energy, cosmic speed-up: Big Bang afterglow shows Earth has no special place in expanding universe

Astronomers have ruled out a controversial theory that the accelerating expansion of the universe is an illusion. While the findings don’t explain the cosmic speed-up, they eliminate one provocative possibility that our planet, solar system and galaxy are at the center of the universe and that there is no dark energy.

via ScienceDaily: Top Science News:

Nov. 7, 2013 — In a new study, Dartmouth researchers rule out a controversial theory that the accelerating expansion of the universe is an illusion. While the findings don’t explain the cosmic speed-up, they eliminate one provocative possibility that our planet, solar system and galaxy are at the center of the universe and that there is no dark energy. The findings appear in the journal Physical Review D.The 2011 Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. One leading idea to explain the acceleration is a new, mysterious substance called dark energy, which is thought to make up nearly three-fourths of the energy of the universe. But another alternative is that Earth, our solar system and Milky Way galaxy are at the center of the universe. That theory violates the standard assumption that the universe has no center, but if true, then cosmic acceleration could be explained without dark energy or any new laws of physics. But Dartmouth researchers found that this model can’t hold up to other observational tests. The sky glows with light left over from the Big Bang, also known as the Cosmic Microwave Background, so they calculated how that glow would be affected. Their findings show that the model’s prediction is completely contrary to the glow that has been measured.”Essentially, we held a mirror up to the universe and asked if the reflection was special,” says Robert Caldwell, a professor of physics and astronomy who co-wrote the article with undergraduate physics major Nina Maksimova. “The reflection shows that we do not appear to live in a special location, and decisively excludes this explanation for the universe’s accelerating expansion. It would be a great relief to be able to understand a basic problem of cosmology within the known laws of physics, but our research is an important step in explaining the physics responsible for the cosmic acceleration.”

Studies have shown that vibrant colors stimulate the brain and I’m quite fascinated by this finding:

In 1979, Dr. Alexander G. Schauss presented his findings on how color affects humans. Dr. Schauss wrote, “Colors are electromagnetic wave bands of energy. Each color has its own wavelength. The wave bands stimulate chemicals in your eye, sending impulses of messages to the pituitary and pineal glands near the brain. These are the master endocrine glands that regulate hormones and other physiological systems in the body. Stimulated by response to colors, glandular activities can alter moods, speed up heart rates and increase brain activity.” With that said, I hope you enjoy my picks here..
