Why work with a partner? Combining Mercy Corps' experience mobilizing communities in remote regions and working in complex, challenging situations, along with Xylem's specialized knowledge in water technology, means the pair can reach more people in need. And, they can offer more intensive, holistic solutions through Xylem's technical expertise.

Xylem is one of world’s largest providers of equipment to treat and transport water. Focused on sustainable resource use, Xylem designs pumps, treatment plants and water quality tests for agricultural, commercial and residential use.

In 2008, Mercy Corps first partnered with Watermark, Xylem’s corporate citizenship and social investment program, to provide safe water after natural disasters in Indonesia, Kenya, Haiti and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

When floods devastated Pakistan in 2010, Watermark and Mercy Corps quickly brought clean water to relief camps.

Although Xylem’s technology is sold in more than 150 countries, it has the greatest presence in the United States and Europe. By partnering with Mercy Corps, Xylem can fulfill its mission to improve water access globally.

But the partnership is about more than immediate, humanitarian aid.

To prevent future water emergencies, Mercy Corps and Xylem work together to improve community water systems, install better filtration and purification infrastructure, and train local communities on water safety.

“The greatest number of lives can be saved by addressing water-related risks before a disaster occurs,” said Michael Fields, Director of Corporate Citizenship at Xylem.

“We desperately need new solutions, and the challenge to private companies and nonprofits globally is to find new ways of working together to help vulnerable communities prepare before disaster strikes.”

Watermark and Mercy Corps worked together in 2009, for instance, to help a Sri Lankan community get outfitted with a new water system (above).

By working with a leader in the water industry, Mercy Corps is able to match big problems with big solutions.

For example, when the largest earthquake in Japan’s recorded history struck the country in 2011, the accompanying tsunami destroyed a salmon hatchery in Minamisanriku. The hatchery played a critical role in the region’s salmon fishing industry.

Watermark’s Emergency Response Fund supported Mercy Corps’ work to rebuild the hatchery. Together, the organizations provided holding tanks, vehicles, fishing nets and other necessary supplies. The hatchery released 5 million baby salmon just one year after the quake.

Today, one of the world’s greatest water challenges is in Jordan. Already one of the most water scarce countries in the world, Jordan is buckling under the strain of absorbing an influx of more than half a million Syrian refugees.

Mercy Corps is working with Xylem to provide water at the Zaatari refugee camp. Together, the organizations built deep-water wells and a system to supply clean drinking water. Now refugees are supplementing these water sources with rainwater catchment systems.

Before the conflict in Syria, the Zaatari camp (above) was an open desert. Now up to 120,000 refugees live on the land, making it the fourth largest city in Jordan.

Wells and holding tanks at the Zaatari refugee camp help families get the clean water they need to drink, cook and clean.

Partnerships are powerful. Working together, Mercy Corps and Watermark have helped give more than 1.6 million people access to clean water so far, as well as improved water systems in communities across the globe.

The results from the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), which are being released on Tuesday, show that teenagers in the U.S. slipped from 25th to 31st in math since 2009; from 20th to 24th in science; and from 11th to 21st in reading, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, which gathers and analyzes the data in the U.S.

Here are highlights of the newly released 2012 scores from the Program of International Student Assessment, an exam given every three years to 15 year olds around the world in reading, math and science. In this administration of PISA, 65 countries and education systems participated. Connecticut, Florida, and Massachusetts each participated for the first time as international benchmarking systems and received separate scores.

These results are part of a release on the PISA results from the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics.

Key findings:

MATHEMATICS LITERACY:

Average scores in mathematics literacy ranged from 613 in Shanghai-China to 368 in Peru. The U.S. average score was 481, which was lower than the OECD average of 494. The U.S. average was lower than 29 education systems, higher than 26 education systems, and not measurably different than 9 education systems.

Massachusetts and Connecticut mathematics literacy average scores were 514 and 506, respectively. Massachusetts’ average was higher than the OECD and U.S. averages and Connecticut’s was higher than the U.S. average but not measurably different than the OECD average. Florida’s average score (467) was lower than the OECD and U.S. averages.

The U.S. mathematics literacy average score in 2012 was not measurably different than any earlier comparable time point (2003, 2006 and 2009). There was no measurable change in average mathematics literacy scores in 33 of the 62 education systems, including the United States, that participated in PISA in 2009 and 2012, but 18 education systems’ average scores increased between 2012 and 2009. Percentages of top performing 15-year-old students (those scoring at PISA proficiency level 5 or above) in mathematics literacy ranged from 55 percent in Shanghai-China to nearly 0 percent in Colombia and Argentina. In the United States, 9 percent of 15-year-old students scored at proficiency level 5 or above, which was lower than the OECD average of 13 percent. The U.S. percentage was lower than 27 education systems, higher than 22 education systems, and not measurably different than 13 education systems.

The percentage of 15-year-old students performing below PISA proficiency level 2, which is considered a baseline of proficiency by the OECD, ranged from 4 percent in Shanghai-China to 76 percent in Indonesia. In the United States, 26 percent of 15-year-old students scored below level 2, which was higher than the OECD average of 23 percent. The U.S. percentage was higher than 29 education systems, lower than 26 education systems, and not measurably different than 9 education systems.

In Massachusetts and Connecticut, 19 and 16 percent of students, respectively, were top performers in mathematics, scoring at PISA proficiency level 5 or above and 18 and 21 percent, respectively, scored below level 2. In Florida, 6 percent of student scored at level 5 or above and 30 percent scored below level 2.

SCIENCE LITERACY:

Average scores in science literacy ranged from 580 in Shanghai-China to 373 in Peru. The U.S. average science literacy score was 497. This was not different from the OECD average of 501. This was lower than the average in 22 education systems. The U.S. average was higher than 29 education systems and was not measurably different than 13 education systems.

Massachusetts and Connecticut science literacy average scores, 527 and 521, respectively, were higher than the OECD and U.S. averages. Florida’s average score (485) was lower than the OECD average and not measurably different than the U.S. average.

The U.S. science literacy average score in 2012 was not measurably different than either earlier comparable time point (2006 and 2009). There was no measurable change in average science literacy scores in 43 of the 62 education systems, including the United States, that participated in PISA in 2009 and 2012, but 13 education systems’ average scores increased between 2009 and 2012.

Percentages of top-performing 15-year-old students (those scoring at PISA proficiency level 5 or above) in science literacy ranged from 27 percent in Shanghai-China and 23 percent in Singapore to nearly 0 percent in eight education systems. In the United States, 7 percent of 15-year-old students scored at proficiency level 5 or above, which was not measurably different from the OECD average of 8 percent. The U.S. percentage was lower than 17 education systems, higher than 27 education systems, and not measurably different than 15 education systems.

In science literacy, the percentage of 15-year-old students performing below PISA proficiency level 2, which is considered a baseline of proficiency by the OECD, ranged from 3 percent in Shanghai-China and 5 percent in Estonia to 67 percent in Indonesia and 68 percent in Peru. In the United States, 18 percent of U.S. 15-year-old students scored below level 2, which was not measurably different from the OECD average of 18 percent. The U.S. percentage was higher than 21 education systems, lower than 29 education systems, and not measurably different than 14 education systems.

In Massachusetts and Connecticut, 14 and 13 percent of students, respectively, were top performers in science, scoring at PISA proficiency level 5 or above and 11 and 13 percent, respectively, scored below level 2. In Florida, 5 percent of student scored at level 5 or above and 21 percent scored below level 2.

READING LITERACY:

Average scores in reading literacy ranged from 570 in Shanghai-China to 384 in Peru. The U.S. average score was 498, which was not measurably different from the OECD average of 496. The U.S. average was lower than 19 education systems, higher than 34 education systems, and not measurably different than 11 education systems.

Massachusetts and Connecticut reading literacy average scores, 527 and 521, respectively, were higher than the OECD and U.S. averages. Massachusetts was outperformed by only three education systems, and Connecticut by four. Florida’s average score (492) was not measurably different than the OECD or U.S. averages.

The U.S. reading literacy average score in 2012 was not measurably different than any earlier comparable time point (2000, 2003, and 2009). There was no measurable change in average reading literacy scores in 34 of the 62 education systems, including the United States, that participated in PISA in 2009 and 2012, but 21 education systems’ average scores increased between 2009 and 2012.

Percentages of top performing 15-year-old students (those scoring at PISA proficiency level 5 or above) in reading literacy ranged from 25 percent in Shanghai-China and 21 percent in Singapore to nearly 0 percent in 3 education systems. In the United States, 8 percent of U.S. 15-year-old students scored at proficiency level 5 or above, which was not measurably different from the OECD average of 8 percent. The U.S. percentage was lower than 14 education systems, higher than 33 education systems, and not measurably different than 12 education systems.

In reading literacy, the percentage of 15-year-old students performing below PISA proficiency level 2, which is considered a baseline of proficiency by the OECD, ranged from 3 percent in Shanghai-China to 60 percent in Peru. In the United States, 17 percent of U.S. 15-year-old students scored below level 2, which was not measurably different from the OECD average of 18 percent. The U.S. percentage was higher than 14 education systems, lower than 33 education systems, and not measurably different than 17 education systems.

In Massachusetts and Connecticut, 16 and 15 percent of students, respectively, were top performers in science, scoring at PISA proficiency level 5 or above and 11 and 13 percent, respectively, scored below level 2. In Florida, 6 percent of student scored at level 5 or above and 17 percent scored below level 2.

Counselors Key to Getting Students from High School to College

In spite of all these warning signs, counselors’ caseloads are so big that this may be the only time for at least a year that many of these students will ever see her or any other counselor. The best she can do is reach out each fall to Campbell’s 800 first-year students in groups like these, to try to give them an idea of what life might be like beyond their early teens.

Campbell High, in Smyrna, a fast-growing city about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta where one in five children under 18 lives in poverty, began holding the group meetings this year. They’re among several attempts the school is making to counteract a vexing but largely unseen problem nationwide: a critical shortage of competent counselors capable of giving advice to college-going high school students, precisely when the country needs more Americans to get degrees — and when getting into college is more expensive and more confusing than ever.

A single public school counselor in the United States has a caseload of 471 students, on average, according to the American School Counselor Association, or ASCA. In high schools, where counselors are often the primary source of information about college — especially as increasing numbers of students become the first in their families to consider it — each one is responsible for an average of 239 students, the ASCA says. In California, the ratio is an even more unwieldy 1-to-500. A Georgia School Counselors Association survey puts the number in that state at 1-to-512.

To make matters worse, budget cuts are forcing counselors to perform more duties unrelated to their traditional roles, such as monitoring the school cafeteria or proctoring exams, says Eric Sparks, the ASCA’s assistant director.

And if that wasn’t cause enough for concern, what little time counselors have to advise students about college is not as productive as it could be, since most get scant training in the subject before taking on the job, reports Alexandria Walton Radford, a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education who has studied the issue.

The result is an overtaxed system in which many students fall through the cracks and either never go to college, go to institutions that are the wrong matches for them, or never learn about financial aid for which they may qualify.

The average school counselor in the United States has a caseload of 471 students.

Examples range from low-income, nonwhite, and ethnic minority valedictorians and first-generation college applicants who shy away from elite schools to freshmen who rely more on friends and relatives than counselors for advice about college.

Those are among the findings of Radford’s research. She says many high school counselors have no choice but to “talk about the average student,” leaving higher-performing classmates to fend for themselves. And if the parents or other relatives of those students happen to have little knowledge of college — as is the case with many immigrants and nonwhites — they may never learn that elite schools are likely to not only accept them, but offer them financial aid.

“Counselors want to do well, but they’re constricted by caseload and the other duties assigned to them,” says Radford, author of Top Student, Top School: How Social Class Shapes Where Valedictorians Go to College.

This problem arises at precisely a time when the economic downturn has made clearer than ever the link between a college education and jobs, leading to a push at the federal and state levels for more people to get degrees.

The complexity of information coming from colleges makes matters even worse, says Barmak Nassirian, director of policy analysis at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. There are 4,000 universities and colleges, Nassirian says. And when the huge variety of prices and financial-aid programs are taken into account, “That’s cacophony. It might as well be a random process.”

Counseling should be a source of help in this cacophony. But, he says, “Counseling is time-consuming and labor-intensive. It is perceived … as an administrative add-on and not funded adequately. With overcrowded classrooms, we’re robbing Peter to pay Paul.”

It’s revealing that three out of four private high schools, where parents expect to get their children into good colleges, have counselors who specialize in advising students about their higher educations, Radford says. And counselors in private schools have a median caseload of only 106.

A new Georgia law will require schools to factor in previously unaccounted-for student populations when assigning budgets for counselors — students who are classified as gifted, have learning disabilities, or are learning English as a second language. The goal is to lower the statewide ratio of counselors to students to a still-high ratio of 1-to-450. Sparks, of the ASCA, says other states, including North Carolina, have passed laws to stop counselors from being assigned to other duties. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a private juggernaut when it comes to education research and policy. In recent months, as Congress has faced education-related issues ranging from the fiscal cliff and sequestration to a failing to reauthorize federal student loan rates, the government shut down and impending retooling of the Higher Education Act (HEA), the Gates foundation has sponsored dozens of research projects designed to offer guidance as to the future shape of Higher Ed in the United States. At the forefront is Melinda Gates.

According to the Associated Press, Gates, easily one of the most influential women in American education, said she gives the U.S. public school system a C-plus, but adds there are spots of improvement that give her optimism for the future.

Gates said she bases her assessment on international comparisons of student achievement and on the fact that only a fraction of American high school students are ready for college when they complete their studies.

“I see pockets of improvements. The neat thing about the pockets of improvements is they’re getting larger all the time and they’re across the nation,” she told The Associated Press during an interview this week in her Seattle office overlooking the Space Needle at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Those pockets are growing in places like New Orleans and in Florida, New York, New Orleans and Colorado, Gates added, because districts are talking to each other and sharing their best practices.

For the past decade, the Gates Foundation has studied education, influenced public policy and spent billions of dollars toward improving student outcomes by supporting education reform and demanding better results. Since 2000, the foundation has spent about $5 billion on education grants and scholarships.

Their focus has influenced the national agenda, as the U.S. Department of Education has pushed for similar reforms such as adoption of the national academic standards known as the common core, as well as insisting on improvement in state teacher-evaluation systems.

The foundation has given some states money and assistance to prepare their applications for federal grant programs and some top officials in Washington, D.C., are former employees at the foundation in Washington state.

Some see the foundation as a critic of American teachers because of their emphasis on teacher evaluations, but Gates said that impression is wrong. She hopes teachers see the foundation as partners in figuring out how to help them do their jobs.

“We fundamentally believe in teachers. My gosh, they’re incredible,” she said, after a day listening to 110 teachers from around the nation compare notes and talk about what they need to improve at a gathering at the Seattle foundation.

At a forum for teachers and foundation staff on Tuesday morning, educators talked about needing more time outside the classroom for training and collaboration.

“Time is a great barrier to the many innovative things we would all like to do as teachers,” said JoAnn Miller, a biology teacher in Oconto Falls, Wis., who was one of three educators sitting on the podium with Gates.

The relatively new teacher, who came into the classroom seven years ago after serving in the U.S. Navy, would like to see protracted mentorship programs for teachers and more time to work together on self-evaluations.

Gates said the foundation is conducting experiments in Fresno, Calif., and Bridgeport, Conn., to see how districts can give teachers more planning and training time.

She said teachers need some of that time for learning about the new national academic standards known as the common core, which have been adopted by 45 states and are considered by Gates to be one of the most important education initiatives right now.

Also on the top of the foundation’s agenda is improving teacher evaluation systems and professional development. The foundation’s third main education initiative involves helping teachers use technology to support their work, such as online forums for sharing lesson plans.

“I know the difference a great teacher can make,” said Gates, who has three children, one each in elementary, middle and high school.

One of the foundation’s first big education initiatives focused on creating smaller schools out of large comprehensive high schools.

The widespread and expensive experiment was considered mostly a failure by education experts, but Gates said the small schools initiative helped the foundation learn what was really important: the teacher at the front of the classroom.

That’s what led to years of research on what makes a great teacher and how schools can use various evaluation methods to study teachers and help them improve. That initiative is now influencing many states in redesigning their teacher evaluation systems, at the insistence of the federal government.

The foundation also has invested money into charter school networks and continues to support charter schools as laboratories for innovation, Gates said.

“You get these pinpoints of light from charter schools,” she said, adding that parents can evaluate their own children’s schools by looking for successful reforms first tried in charter schools.

Gates said she is very excited to see charter schools finally coming to her home state. Last November, Washington voters approved adding up to 40 of the independent public schools within five years.

Building inclusive markets is a key approach that allows the poor to join with powerful partners in fighting poverty. If you’re wondering what this aid approach looks like, here are four programs that promote market-based solutions to poverty.

Growing Inclusive Markets – UN Development Program

Like its mothership, the United Nations, the Growing Inclusive Markets initiative is a research-producing machine. The initiative states that massive economic growth in developing countries will only be achieved if the poor are seen as consumers, producers, business owners and employees, and not just the beneficiaries of corporate social responsibility dollars.

If you want case studies, Growing Inclusive Markets has case studies – the UN initiative counts more than 120 inclusive business models, "rigorously documented and reviewed," that follow its advice on how to include the poor in core business activities.

What it doesn’t do: Anything that's purely philanthropic. A development program may be altruistic but if it's not commercially sustainable, Growing Inclusive Markets isn't interested.

What it looks like on the ground: In Burkina Faso, the French organic cosmetics company L’Occitane invested in local women’s cooperatives, helping 15,000 employees produce and export quality shea butter and generate US $1.2 million in profits. Growing Inclusive Markets wants more of these success stories, and it is documenting as many examples as possible to make it easier for the next company to follow suit and, ultimately, alleviate poverty.

Opportunities for the Majority – Inter-American Development Bank

Mirroring its parent business, Opportunities for the Majority focuses on projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. The initiative helps poor people become key players in expanding local markets and earning profit by sponsoring building projects in sectors ranging from agriculture to infrastructure, and improving the poor’s access to these newly-created jobs.

The initiative promotes sustainable business models that connect companies, local governments and communities to the poor. The ultimate task is to identify local demand for quality products and show all parties that partnering with the poor can be both profitable and sustainable.

The Bank offers a variety of financial services to encourage engagement with poor communities, creating incentives for companies to expand operations and build long-lasting partnerships with the poor. And those at the bottom of the economic pyramid reap the benefits by receiving affordable goods and services, greater job opportunities and access to the formal economy.

What it looks like on the ground: In 2011, Opportunities for the Majority loaned US $2 million to support FINAE, a Mexican financial institution that provides student loans to middle- and low-income students.

The FINAE loans cover all tuition costs, and include training and tutorial support to the students. In turn, students must be in good academic standing to receive a loan. They pay only the interest on the loan while in school, and repay the full amount progressively after they leave school and find jobs.

Inclusive Business Models Group – International Finance Corporation

The International Finance Corporation, an arm of the World Bank, promotes inclusive business as a private sector approach to provide goods and services to the poor. By thinking of poor people not only as customers but also as potential suppliers, distributors, and retailers, the group develops successful partnerships with the poor while building up inclusive business models across the globe.

In 2012, the companies that worked with the IFC reached over 173 million farmers, students, patients, and utility customers directly, provided more than 13 million microfinance loans and created 284,000 jobs.

The Inclusive Business Models Group offers its business clients a collection of resources and networks to help scale up their models and in turn, develop more mutually beneficial partnerships with the poor.

What it looks like on the ground: ECOM Agroindustrial Corp. Ltd, a business client of the IFC, works directly with small scale coffee farmers throughout Central America. By providing opportunities for farmers to finance their production and access business training and technical support, ECOM has given farmers the tools to get both more quantity and quality out of their crops, boosting the value of their produce and the cash in their wallets. Between 2006 and 2012, ECOM purchased more than 81,000 metric tons of certified coffee to sell to branded product manufacturers like Starbucks and Nestlé Group, providing an additional $14.7 million in income for farmers.

Private Sector Development – The Donor Committee for Enterprise Development

The Donor Committee for Enterprise Development champions private sector development to help the poor find jobs, improve income and escape dependency on foreign assistance.

The committee uses a number of approaches that encourage risk-taking in public-private partnerships and takes into account the potential failure of markets or governments. By nudging investment behavior in a new direction, the committee seeks to expose uncharted investment opportunities that can promise profit for firms while improving markets and opportunities for the poor.

Expanding the private sector means that governments of developing countries can boost tax revenues needed to invest in health care, education and public infrastructure.

What it looks like on the ground: Vietnamese entrepreneurs used to face hundreds of regulations, making it nearly impossible to start new businesses, generate additional income or create job opportunities. The committee, in collaboration with Australia and the UN Development Program, provided support to the Vietnamese Parliament to draft and implement a new Enterprise Law, which was enacted in 2000. In just three years, 55,000 new businesses had registered, creating more than 1 million jobs. The law now creates an estimated 750,000 jobs annually by reducing some of the largest barriers involved in starting and operating a business in Vietnam.

These four programs prove that poor people can be important partners in the fight to eradicate poverty. When influential donors and aid organizations nudge businesses, governments and communities to promote inclusive markets, they create a powerful solution to poverty. The best solution, after all, will be one that lasts long after the dust has settled, and all of the aid workers have packed up and gone home.

Oct. 17, 2013 — A study of 69,000 Medicare patient records led by Johns Hopkins researchers shows that people with spine compression fractures who undergo operations to strengthen back bones with cement survive longer and have shorter overall hospital stays than those who stick with bed rest, pain control and physical therapy.Although so-called interventional augmentation procedures were initially more expensive than conservative medical management of the fractures, the researchers say the former were associated with lower in-hospital mortality and increased survival compared with non-operative management.”Our results suggest that the beneficial impact of minimally invasive surgery for vertebral compression fractures reaches beyond the acute phase and improves post-discharge survival and morbidity,” says Richard L. Skolasky Jr., Sc.D., associate professor at The Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Spine Outcomes Research Center.Osteoporosis, which mostly affects the elderly, is responsible for more than 700,000 vertebral compression fractures and an estimated 150,000 hospitalizations annually in the United States, Skolasky notes, and can cause significant pain and disability in the elderly. Traditional medical treatment is almost always tried first, while interventional procedures — known as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty — consist of injecting bone cement through a small hole in the skin into a fractured vertebra. Skolasky noted that vertebral compression fractures are associated with a substantial economic burden, a medical management cost estimated at $13.8 billion in 2001.In a report on the new study, published in the October edition of The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, the researchers said that vertebral augmentation procedures not only appear to be associated with greater patient survival than non-operative management, but also that kyphoplasty — which uses balloon inflation to create an opening for the cement — tends to have a more striking association with survival than vertebroplasty.”Treating vertebral compression fractures with vertebral augmentation procedures is associated with acute pain relief and improved mobility, but direct comparisons are limited,” said Skolasky.For the study, Skolasky and his colleagues conducted a “post-hoc” analysis and comparison of information on some 69,000 patients sorted into three categories of fracture care: non-operative, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. The team examined differences in survival at six months, one year, two years and three years along with complications, length of hospital stay, charges assessed by the discharging hospital and/or the health care provider delivering services, 30-day readmission rates and repeat procedures.Results showed that the overall survival rate for the entire study population was 77.8 percent at one year and 49.6 percent at three years. The kyphoplasty group had the highest survival rates at one and three years, at 85.2 percent and 59.9 percent, respectively. When examined by age, individuals in the kyphoplasty group consistently had higher survival rates. The study also discovered that patients treated non-operatively on average were hospitalized approximately eight days longer. The total charges for kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty were $12,032 and $7,805 more than those treated non-operatively.Skolasky said that the study showed that there was no statistically significant difference in postoperative infections and neurologic complications between surgical and non-operative patients. …

Stocks continued their rally Thursday following President Obama’s early morning signing of a bill reopening the government (through January 15) and suspending the federal debt ceiling (until February 7), with the S&P 500 closing at a new high. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ, which closed at a 13-year high, climbed 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened the Thursday down more than 140 points or 0.9% and gradually fought its way back to roughly breakeven on the day, penalized by three stocks that reported disappointing third-quarter results: IBM (-6%), UnitedHealth Group (-5%) and Goldman Sachs (-2%). All three companies missed on Q3 revenues, and UnitedHealth issued reduced guidance for 2014 on changes resulting from the Affordable Care Act. Together the three stocks …
