The challenges facing high school counselors, who are tasked with discussing college and career choices with students, can be difficult. The challenges facing high school counselors, who are tasked with discussing college and career choices with students, can be difficult. As a piece from the Hechinger Report illustrates, a counselor at Campbell High, in Smyrna, GA, when asking about her students’ goals, was greeted with indifference and wisecracks like “Become a drug dealer.”
Later, when asked to sit at computers and go through a questionnaire to help determine what courses of studies and careers would be good fits for them, several of the same students struggle with the words on the screen, English still foreign to them.
In spite of all these warning signs, counselors’ caseloads are so big that this may be the only time for at least a year that many of these students will ever see her or any other counselor. The best she can do is reach out each fall to Campbell’s 800 first-year students in groups like these, to try to give them an idea of what life might be like beyond their early teens.
Campbell High, in Smyrna, a fast-growing city about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta where one in five children under 18 lives in poverty, began holding the group meetings this year. They’re among several attempts the school is making to counteract a vexing but largely unseen problem nationwide: a critical shortage of competent counselors capable of giving advice to college-going high school students, precisely when the country needs more Americans to get degrees — and when getting into college is more expensive and more confusing than ever.
A single public school counselor in the United States has a caseload of 471 students, on average, according to the American School Counselor Association, or ASCA. In high schools, where counselors are often the primary source of information about college — especially as increasing numbers of students become the first in their families to consider it — each one is responsible for an average of 239 students, the ASCA says. In California, the ratio is an even more unwieldy 1-to-500. A Georgia School Counselors Association survey puts the number in that state at 1-to-512.
To make matters worse, budget cuts are forcing counselors to perform more duties unrelated to their traditional roles, such as monitoring the school cafeteria or proctoring exams, says Eric Sparks, the ASCA’s assistant director.
And if that wasn’t cause enough for concern, what little time counselors have to advise students about college is not as productive as it could be, since most get scant training in the subject before taking on the job, reports Alexandria Walton Radford, a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education who has studied the issue.
The result is an overtaxed system in which many students fall through the cracks and either never go to college, go to institutions that are the wrong matches for them, or never learn about financial aid for which they may qualify.
The average school counselor in the United States has a caseload of 471 students.
Examples range from low-income, nonwhite, and ethnic minority valedictorians and first-generation college applicants who shy away from elite schools to freshmen who rely more on friends and relatives than counselors for advice about college.
Those are among the findings of Radford’s research. She says many high school counselors have no choice but to “talk about the average student,” leaving higher-performing classmates to fend for themselves. And if the parents or other relatives of those students happen to have little knowledge of college — as is the case with many immigrants and nonwhites — they may never learn that elite schools are likely to not only accept them, but offer them financial aid.
“Counselors want to do well, but they’re constricted by caseload and the other duties assigned to them,” says Radford, author of Top Student, Top School: How Social Class Shapes Where Valedictorians Go to College.
This problem arises at precisely a time when the economic downturn has made clearer than ever the link between a college education and jobs, leading to a push at the federal and state levels for more people to get degrees.
The complexity of information coming from colleges makes matters even worse, says Barmak Nassirian, director of policy analysis at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. There are 4,000 universities and colleges, Nassirian says. And when the huge variety of prices and financial-aid programs are taken into account, “That’s cacophony. It might as well be a random process.”
Counseling should be a source of help in this cacophony. But, he says, “Counseling is time-consuming and labor-intensive. It is perceived … as an administrative add-on and not funded adequately. With overcrowded classrooms, we’re robbing Peter to pay Paul.”
It’s revealing that three out of four private high schools, where parents expect to get their children into good colleges, have counselors who specialize in advising students about their higher educations, Radford says. And counselors in private schools have a median caseload of only 106.
A new Georgia law will require schools to factor in previously unaccounted-for student populations when assigning budgets for counselors — students who are classified as gifted, have learning disabilities, or are learning English as a second language. The goal is to lower the statewide ratio of counselors to students to a still-high ratio of 1-to-450. Sparks, of the ASCA, says other states, including North Carolina, have passed laws to stop counselors from being assigned to other duties. But at a time of stretched resources, money to lower the caseloads “has been limited.”

In October, artisans in Africa gained a direct link to shoppers around the world through a mobile shopping app launched by Soko.
Soko, the online shopping site founded by Ella Peinovich, Gwendolyn Floyd, and Catherine Mahugu, connects artisans and shoppers around the world through mobile technology. Using the Soko application on a mobile device, designers and artisans don’t need bank accounts or computers to upload and sell their jewelry online.
“At Soko we believe that the global marketplace should be accessible to all artisans in the digital age,” Floyd said in a statement. “Artisans everywhere deserve equitable access to the means to support their craft… while consumers consistently demand access to world goods”.
In addition to building relationships between consumers and artisans, Soko provides merchants with tools and strategies to form profitable and sustainable businesses.
Initially introduced in Kenya, the free app is available to any artisan in a developing market with mobile coverage and banking systems. Artisans can create profiles and upload images and details of products to reach international consumers.
Soko functions similarly to Etsy, an online marketplace in which vendors selling vintage or handmade pieces can select the payment method offered to consumers. Soko accepts credit card payments from shoppers, and transfers the payment into mobile money payment for the vendor.
Although many social enterprises have incorporated mobile technology into their business, the practice is not yet completely mainstream. Several apps specifically designed to support social enterprise endeavors have hit the scene.
The market for mobile technology in social enterprise is growing. More and more companies like Soko are seizing opportunities to build business through mobile apps, ultimately benefiting their cause.
“We want to truly empower [artisans] by providing, through simple mobile technology, the practical industry knowledge required to flourish as artisans and.. participate in the global marketplace, becoming a driver of social and economic development in their community” Floyd said.

via The Simple Dollar:
The reality of retirement savings comes down to a very simple decision.
Each paycheck or each week or each month, you have a choice to make. You can either put a certain amount of money away for retirement, or you can keep it and spend it on other expenses as you see fit.
Every time you choose to put some money away, it essentially disappears out of your life for a long while. It goes into a 401(k) or an IRA or some other savings vehicle and it grows slowly, ideally earning a bit of a return each year.
When you actually reach retirement age – around 60 for most of these plans – you can access that money without penalty and, ideally, that money has grown quite a bit. Let’s say, hypothetically, that it has quadrupled.
So let’s look at it that way. If you could put a dollar into a machine knowing that it would spit out four dollars when you’re old, would you do it? How many times would you do it?
It’s easy to think of it as a simple exchange. You’re thinking about having a coffee at Starbucks, but then you realize you could just drop $5 in the machine instead, knowing that you’ll have $20 when you’re older. You choose to skip this little forgettable thing and that little forgettable thing, knowing that by doing so, you’re passing money to yourself that you might really need later.
In other words, it seems very reasonable to skip out on some of the most inessential items in life if you know that by doing so you’ll help yourself with the essentials of life later on.
Here’s the problem, though, and I think it’s why a lot of Americans don’t save for retirement or don’t save enough.
It’s easy to make that choice in the moment with regards to one little inessential expense that’s right in front of us. The choice to forego a little treat or something like that is an easy one in the moment.
It’s a lot harder to make that decision outside of the moment when you’re looking at a bunch of inessential expenses at once.
What’s the difference? When you look at a bunch of inessential expenses at once, you don’t see the loss of three cups of coffee and two magazines. You see the loss of freedom of choice. The idea that you would choose to bring home a smaller paycheck seems very painful because it means that you have fewer opportunities.
The thing to always keep in mind is that every dollar you put into retirement is only eliminating the least essential things you might buy. Putting away $20 a week for retirement means $20 you’re not spending on a bigger cup of coffee at Starbucks or a celebrity gossip magazine or a song downloaded from iTunes. It’s $20 not spent on the most forgettable stuff in your life.
Now, roll the clock forward to retirement. Your only income is Social Security plus whatever you chose to put away during your working years. Over that time, your $20 has turned into $80. $80 on top of Social Security makes a big difference in terms of making ends meet.
Saving for retirement simply means dropping the least essential expenses today so that you have the money for highly essential expenses later.
If you’re afraid to sign up for retirement because you don’t want to lose a little bit out of your paycheck, keep this idea in mind. You’re not losing freedom. You’re simply choosing to give up some of the least important ways you spend money so that you’ll have enough money to keep food on the table later on.

There are a lot of things that business owners have to think about when establishing a startup. However, nothing is more important and challenging than finding investors who are willing to listen to a pitch and possibly provide funding for business startups.
Unfortunately for entrepreneurs, finding an investor is not an easy task. Sometimes, one has to talk to at least fifty persons just to find someone who is willing to provide capital for the business startup. The number is even higher in case of startups that focus on special fields such as medicine, among others.
Despite this challenge, there are a number of resources that could help a potential million-dollar business reach the top. Here are some things that could help a business startup owner attract investors:
Establish Social Media Presence
There are a number of social media sites on the Internet that could help an entrepreneur find an interested investor. Having a profile in such sites makes it easier for investors to understand your business and gain their possible trust for a partnership. Browsing through other profiles can also help business owners establish connection to a number of investors who are based in other areas.
Create a List of Possible Investors
The problem with neophyte business owners is that they usually think that all investors are interested in what they have to say. This is not true. In fact, the possibility of getting an investor on board is highly dependent on their interests.
So as not to waste time pitching to someone who is not interested, a business owner must create a strategic list of people who are known to be interested in the kind of business that they are planning to start. Entrepreneurs must keep in mind that some investors only put money on specific fields such as medicine or information technology. Knowing the interests of the investors will surely remove some of the time that has to be spent looking for financial support.
Maximize Networks
Securing an investment requires a lot of trust on the part of both the investor and the business owner. This is usually a problem for owners because some investors would refuse their proposals out right because they don’t know them
In order to avoid this frustrating situation, business owners are advised to use their connections to get acquainted with a potential investor. Having someone introduce you to a possible partner is a good way to get his or her approval. This is clearly much better than having to introduce a business without the support of a network.

With a small investment, Truong hired 35 women to begin producing the quilts, initially sold to friends. Now, 12 years later, Mekong Quilts has seven shops and employs over 340 women full time.
Mekong Quilts is one of many examples of a successful social enterprise program. Around the world, businesses and organizations are applying investment strategies to improve human and environmental well-being and make a financial return.
Several social investment forums brought social investment into the mainstream in 2013 and helped create and viable finance social investment and enterprise projects in Vietnam. At the Social Investment Forum in August in Hanoi, social investment experts discussed Vietnam’s potential and readiness for social investment, as well as ways to increase accessibility of social investment opportunities .
In 2012, there were 200 self-identified social enterprise organizations in Vietnam. But social investment totalled just $2 million, and another 165,000 organizations could become social enterprises, forum organizers said. The large gap between actual and potential social enterprises in Vietnam reflects the lack of legal structure for social enterprises, according to The Guardian. Organizations that could be considered social enterprises instead identify themselves as charities or simply as a business. The Social Investment Forum recommended creating a legal structure for social enterprises that would include tax relief for investors and policies that would incorporate and value social impact.
Other social investment forums held this year targeted Western investors, policy makers, philanthropists, and students to engage in the social investment movement. Here are four of the top annual forums to check out for next year:
Thanh Truong proved that a vision and small financial expenditure could dramatically improve the quality of life of the women with whom she works. These international forums confirm that similar commitments made by businesses and organizations around the world would be beneficial to investors and communities alike.
