The group picked up tips and tricks during a recent workshop at Nike's Beaverton, Ore., headquarters. Amidst buildings named for Nike’s biggest sports legends, the analysts listened eagerly for tidbits that could help them improve business in their home countries, like Saudi Arabia, El Salvador, Bahrain, and Tunisia.

Know when to take a leap

Nike co-founder Phil Knight started his shoe career as a distributor for Onitsuka Tiger, a sneaker company based in Japan. Once he was successful in the industry, Knight decided to manufacture sports shoes, and launched his own company. “Nike” was the Greek goddess of victory.

Inspiration is everywhere

Bill Bowerman, the legendary track coach and co-founder of Nike, experimented with pouring plastic into a waffle iron to create a lightweight track shoe outsole with plenty of traction. With the signature outsole, Nike sprinted past competitors to become the athletic empire it is today.

Go against the rules

In 1985, Nike and Chicago Bulls basketball star Michael Jordan created the black-and-red Air Jordan 1 basketball shoe. The design was controversial and the NBA outlawed the shoes because they were not the standard white. Jordan wore them anyway, and the shoes were a slam dunk.

Come up with a revolutionary campaign

In addition to the company’s iconic “swoosh” logo, Nike devised several slogans that are synonymous with its name.“There is no finish line” and “Just do it” are part of the American lexicon.

Don’t lose sight of what you’re trying to build

Reflecting fondly on his days at the University of Oregon, Knight modeled Nike headquarters after a college campus to evoke learning, innovation, community, and competition to produce cutting-edge gear for athletes at all levels.

And if you visit the campus on the right day, you might see you might see Rory McIlroy on the campus putting green, or Maria Sharapova practicing her backhand on the tennis court.

Oct. 24, 2013 — An international research consortium led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the University of Chicago has answered several questions about the genetic background of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette syndrome (TS), providing the first direct confirmation that both are highly heritable and also revealing major differences between the underlying genetic makeup of the disorders. Their report is being published in the October issue of the open-access journal PLOS Genetics.”Both TS and OCD appear to have a genetic architecture of many different genes — perhaps hundreds in each person — acting in concert to cause disease,” says Jeremiah Scharf, MD, PhD, of the Psychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Genetics Unit in the MGH Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology, senior corresponding author of the report. “By directly comparing and contrasting both disorders, we found that OCD heritability appears to be concentrated in particular chromosomes — particularly chromosome 15 — while TS heritability is spread across many different chromosomes.”An anxiety disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions that disrupt the lives of patients, OCD is the fourth most common psychiatric illness. TS is a chronic disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics that usually begins in childhood and is often accompanied by conditions like OCD or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Both conditions have been considered to be heritable, since they are known to often recur in close relatives of affected individuals, but identifying specific genes that confer risk has been challenging.Two reports published last year in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, with leadership from Scharf and several co-authors of the current study, described genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of thousands of affected individuals and controls. While those studies identified several gene variants that appeared to increase the risk of each disorder, none of the associations were strong enough to meet the strict standards of genome-wide significance. Since the GWAS approach is designed to identify relatively common gene variants and it has been proposed that OCD and TS might be influenced by a number of rare variants, the research team adopted a different method. Called genome-wide complex trait analysis (GCTA), the approach allows simultaneous comparision of genetic variation across the entire genome, rather than the GWAS method of testing sites one at a time, as well as estimating the proportion of disease heritability caused by rare and common variants.”Trying to find a single causative gene for diseases with a complex genetic background is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack,” says Lea Davis, PhD, of the section of Genetic Medicine at the University of Chicago, co-corresponding author of the PLOS Genetics report. “With this approach, we aren’t looking for individual genes. …

With a small investment, Truong hired 35 women to begin producing the quilts, initially sold to friends. Now, 12 years later, Mekong Quilts has seven shops and employs over 340 women full time.

Mekong Quilts is one of many examples of a successful social enterprise program. Around the world, businesses and organizations are applying investment strategies to improve human and environmental well-being and make a financial return.

Several social investment forums brought social investment into the mainstream in 2013 and helped create and viable finance social investment and enterprise projects in Vietnam. At the Social Investment Forum in August in Hanoi, social investment experts discussed Vietnam’s potential and readiness for social investment, as well as ways to increase accessibility of social investment opportunities .

In 2012, there were 200 self-identified social enterprise organizations in Vietnam. But social investment totalled just $2 million, and another 165,000 organizations could become social enterprises, forum organizers said. The large gap between actual and potential social enterprises in Vietnam reflects the lack of legal structure for social enterprises, according to The Guardian. Organizations that could be considered social enterprises instead identify themselves as charities or simply as a business. The Social Investment Forum recommended creating a legal structure for social enterprises that would include tax relief for investors and policies that would incorporate and value social impact.

Other social investment forums held this year targeted Western investors, policy makers, philanthropists, and students to engage in the social investment movement. Here are four of the top annual forums to check out for next year:

• Finance for a Sustainable Future 2013, sponsored by the Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investments last May in Chicago, connected investors, consultants, analysts and other financial professionals to research, education and leadership opportunities in sustainable investment. Speakers discussed new trends, approaches and policy developments in the field.


• Responsible Investment Forum 2013 was dedicated to reducing social inequalities and environmental damage.The London forum, hosted by Private Equity International in June, explored the impact that environmental, social and governance issues have on debt, and how private equity managers can navigate emerging markets while considering these issues.


• The Social Enterprise World Forum is hosted by a different country each year. The 2013 forum, earlier this month in Calgary, sought to bring representatives from all social enterprise sectors to launch the social enterprise movement into the mainstream. The topics ranged from innovation to systemic change, but the theme of the forum centered on community organization and empowerment. The forum spotlighted organizations such as the Okanagan Changemakers and Groupe Convex that exemplify this theme by promoting community involvement and meaningful employment.


• The theme for the Social Enterprise Summit 2013 in May in Minneapolis was “Building an Economy on Purpose,” reflecting the host’s belief that social enterprise is the most hopeful way to create successful global economies that serve the common good. The Summit brought together organizations to share success stories and learn from each other.

Thanh Truong proved that a vision and small financial expenditure could dramatically improve the quality of life of the women with whom she works. These international forums confirm that similar commitments made by businesses and organizations around the world would be beneficial to investors and communities alike.
