RBI Not Likely to Lossen Policy Until Next Year Says Poll

The Reserve Bank of India will probably wait until the second quarter of next year to loosen policy as it wants to cool inflation before trying to spur growth, a Reuters poll found ahead of a policy review meeting next week.

All but three of 46 economists surveyed over the past week said the bank would leave its key repo rate unchanged at 8.0 percent when it meets on Sept. 30.

The survey showed that the RBI is also unlikely to alter either the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR), setting banks’ minimum bond holding requirements, or the cash reserve ratio (CRR) that sets the percentage of depositors’ balances that banks must keep with the central bank.

And 16 of 21 economists polled said it will not cut the ceiling on debt that must be held-to-maturity (HTM).

Analysts also pushed back expectations for when the first interest rate cut is likely to happen.

Week in FX Asia – USD/JPY Touches Six Year High

  • USD/JPY Rises to 6 year high

  • Japan PM Reshuffles Cabinet

  • Bank of Japan maintains positive economic view after meeting

The USD/JPY continued its upward trend even after the disappointing Non Farm Payrolls numbers did take a bit out of the USD on Friday. The decision by the European Central Bank to cut rates and introduce asset back securities purchases had more impact than the US employment figure coming in under expectations. The USD had a steady pace the whole week. The setback on Friday proved to be minor, although it has implications in how soon the Fed will raise interest rates which could further depreciate the JPY.

The week started for the USD/JPY at 104.20 and the dollar never looked back after the central Banks of Australia, Canada, England and Japan made no changes to their monetary policies. Europe continues to be caught in a deflationary spin and ECB President Draghi is running out of options. After announcing last month that they have selected BlackRock as their asset back securities consultants they announced that they will launch a program like QE, but without the sovereign implications.

The announcement boosted the USD across the board as the ECB provided action to their rhetoric of low rates for longer. The Bank of Japan did that last year in March, but has stuck to words rather than economic action since then. The sales tax needed to be higher if Japan wants to achieve fiscal health, but it puts the nascent economic recovery in jeopardy.

PM Shinzo Abe gets a do over in one of his more criticized moves after assuming the role. His cabinet had a far right leaning this of course did not help matters with China. Now Abe is replacing 12 of his 18 member cabinet with appointments to China friendly diplomats although the tension between the two countries will continue as Japan revisionist history minimizes the war crimes committed against China and Korea, now two of its most important trade partners.

Shinzo Abe’s main partner on the economic front continues to be Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda. The central banker continues to be optimistic about Abenomics’ inflation targets. The sales tax hike introduced in April has had a negative effect in the pace of the economy. It has gone from a transitory ailment, to something that could be more permanent, yet Kuroda is not convinced is here to stay and is onboard to keep to the schedule to increase again in December.

Next Week For Asia:

The week that ended focused heavily on the Western hemisphere. In particular central banks enjoyed a lot of attention and while the BoE issues no changes. The ECB started to cave in to the outside and inside European pressures building in the market.

Next week China will issue new loans figures. Given the rise of shadow banking in China, it is an important indicator on how the financial system matures in the Asian nation. Inflation and Producer Prices will be released as well.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand will issue a rate decision. Having already hiked a couple of times it is unlikely that they will need to further adjust the benchmark rate. The current rate is expected to stay unmoved at 3.5%

The Bank of Japan will issue the minutes from its policy meeting. The sales tax impact has already been hinted by Kuroda, but the central bank remains steadfast in maintaining their positive assessment of the economy. The published minutes will not break with the previous speeches from Governor Kuroda.

After the roller coaster week that had a Russia-Ukraine escalation and ceasefire and the ECB finally announcing their asset backed securities program to try and get Europe back into growth territory next week’s schedule seems tame in comparison.

As someone who is starting to divide opinion on the global policy maker circuit Bank of England Governor has enjoyed both the title “rockstar” and “unreliable boyfriend” added to his resume. He will address the Trades Union Congress on September 9. Employment is the main indicator for the BoE and the Fed regarding raising rates, so the market will be paying attention to what Carney has to say in Liverpool.

V bounce is now becoming inverse V.

Momentum massacre continues and shows no sign of stabilization as of now.

But the selling still is narrowly focused on stocks that went up a lot in last 18 months.

This correction was overdue and is part of normal market action. In last 18 months the extensive Fed support created a abnormal market action.

A 10% or more correction would set the market up for another up leg in this market in second half of the year.

The trick is not to get wiped out or take big draw downs during these periods. As you might have read some trading bloggers are down 30% plus in last few weeks. That is not a very good situation to be in.

If there is more downside, it will be punctuated by many bounces and will be very volatile.

Price level 1.6600 corresponds to the neckline of a possible Double Top reversal pattern being established around 1.6450 (61.8% Fibonacci).

Thinking Private School? Look beyond FAFSA.

This is the time of year when students and parents are running around the house, gathering financial information, receipts and pay stubs in order to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). While the need for an annual round of the FAFSA Tango is generally well known, there’s another financial aid application out there that more and more schools are using: The College Board’s CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE. Nearly 400 private colleges and universities require students to submit a CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE — I’m just going to call it “the CSS” from here on out — in order to determine non-federal aid eligibility.

CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Overview

Schools that require students to file a CSS use the information they gather to administer grants, scholarships and private loans. Because these types of aid funds tend to be more competitive — and therefore run out more quickly — the deadline for getting your CSS in to the school tends to come up sooner than that of the FAFSA. The deadlines vary by school, so be sure to ask if your school needs you to fill out a CSS and when it is due. Unlike the FAFSA, you can fill out and submit your CSS in the fall for the next academic year.

One more thing to keep in mind, particularly if you’re a prospective freshman applying to multiple schools, is that the CSS is not free (unlike FAFSA). The cost for submitting a CSS is $5 plus $18 for each school or scholarship program you send the CSS to. This is another argument for making a decision about where you’re attending school as early as possible.

CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Tips

The CSS is available as an online application. Before you start, however, the College Board recommends you gather all the necessary information in order to make the process go more smoothly. Before you sit down at the computer, gather up:

  • Your current year federal income tax return(s), if completed;

  • Last year’s federal income tax return(s);

  • W-2 forms and other records of money earned last year;

  • Records of untaxed income and benefits for the last two tax years;

  • Current bank statements;

  • Current mortgage information;

  • Records of savings, stocks, bonds, trusts, and other investments;

  • In the case of divorced parents, the noncustodial parent’s email address.

While it’s usually a better bet to have your taxes filed before completing the CSS, the earlier deadlines and the need to get your application in early may not always make this a feasible option. You can always estimate your income using pay stubs, W-2s and last year’s taxes.

For students whose parents are divorced, the custodial parent should fill out the CSS. However, unlike colleges that look only at the FAFSA, schools that use the CSS may require additional financial information from the non-custodial parent. The CSS also requires a minimum financial contribution from the student, which is also a departure from FAFSA.

One thing that can work to students’ advantages is that the CSS leaves much more of the eligibility decisions to the professional judgment of the individual colleges’ financial aid administrators. This allows more leeway for you to describe your own specific financial situation and not simply be pegged as an EFC and left at that.

Is 2014 the year you start your first post-college job? Alison Green, a management expert, offered are some tips in U.S. News that will help you to quickly build a strong reputation and ensure that your first job is a success.

1. Listen more than you talk. Soak up information about how the organization works, and the reasons why, before you offer “helpful” alternatives.

2. Don’t segregate yourself with people in your age group. Get to know older workers too. Your peer group may be more fun for happy hours, but those coworkers who are a decade or more older than you can possibly help with your career. (And you might find out you enjoy their company too!)

3. Don’t become part of a workplace clique. As much as you might like some coworkers, you should maintain professional boundaries. Don’t get drawn into gossiping, and don’t take on other people’s workplace battles just because you consider them friends. Too many young workers have harmed their own careers by focusing on chitchat over work, or by deciding to dislike the boss just because a coworker does.

4. Take mistakes seriously. There’s nothing more frustrating than an employee who made a mistake and doesn’t seem to think it’s a big deal. When you make a mistake, immediately take responsibility for it, figure out how you’re going to fix it, and make it clear that you understand its seriousness. Responses like “my bad” or worse, no response at all, signal that you don’t take work seriously.

5. Take notes. Your boss expects you to remember the specific instructions you were given—and that includes nuances, not just the overarching idea. For most people, that means taking notes. And while a good manager is happy to answer questions, she won’t be if the questions are ones she already answered when you weren’t bothering to pay attention.

6. Don’t use social networking sites or instant-messaging with friends throughout the workday. When you’re at work, you should focus 100 percent on work. There’s no quicker way to make a bad impression than to be spotted on Gmail or IM’ing with friends when you should be working.

7. Do what you say you’re going to do and by when you say you’re going to do it. Always, always sticking to your word will establish you as someone reliable and trustworthy, someone who is on top of their game—and it’s such rare behavior that you’ll stand out for it.

8. Pay attention to the culture. This is hugely important, and when new employees don’t do it, they come across as tone-deaf. Observe how others act and you’ll pick up a ton of information about cultural expectations. Are people compulsively on time for meetings? Do they take a real lunch or eat at their desks? What hours do most people work? Is there a lot of chitchat during the day, or do people stay focused? Do people primarily use email to communicate or do they talk in person? While you don’t need to become someone you’re not, you do want to try to roughly fit into cultural parameters.

9. Be open to learning. You may have learned lots of theory in the classroom, but it tends to change drastically when human behavior gets involved. College gave you theory; work is going to give something entirely different, so stay humble and realize your first job is going to be largely about learning.

10. Thank people who help you. When your boss or another coworker takes the time to help you with something, give them a sincere thank you. People who feel appreciated are more likely to go out of their way for you again. If you don’t seem to care, they probably won’t bother again.

Hi traders. The year has come to an end and what a year it was. I made a video that looks back at the overall market action for 2013 and gives a prediction for what I expect to see in 2014. One more day of trading left in 2013 and the overwhelming theme for me recently has been the IPO market. Perhaps this is all due to the overwhelming success (the last two days not withstanding) of Twitter, but my scans have seemingly been overpopulated by IPO bases for a few weeks now. I have traded some, but haven’t held them as I am still wary of a correction to start the year, something I will discuss in my next post on Wednesday. I really don’t know if all of these bases I am seeing in new names is a good thing or a sign of froth. “We have either too few jobs for college grads in general, or too many degrees misaligned with the jobs available in the workplace,” said Brandon Busteed, executive director of Gallup Education, in a blog post.

Researchers based the engagement findings on workers’ assessments of different workplace elements related to performance outcomes, such as productivity, customer service, quality, retention, safety and profit.

For those with a high school diploma or less, about 33 percent said they felt engaged. But as workers climbed up the educational ladder, they became increasingly more likely to report feeling the opposite.

Just more than 50 percent of workers who completed technical school or had some college education said they do not feel engaged at work, meaning they are satisfied with their workplace but are not emotionally connected to it. Another 20 percent said they were “actively disengaged,” meaning they are “emotionally disconnected” from their work and workplace and jeopardize their team’s performance, the survey says.

College graduates were less likely to say they feel engaged at work, with about 28 percent giving a positive answer. And although that percentage increased slightly for those who moved on to postgraduate education, up to 30.1 percent, the number is still lower than those with a high school education or less.

The findings reinforce a common criticism of the American higher education system: colleges are not preparing students for the types of jobs they want or need. “If Americans are judging the colleges they choose based on whether they can get good jobs, they may be better off not choosing college at all,” Busteed said.

Several studies have shown that college graduates are becoming increasingly underemployed, despite society’s insistence that getting a college education will benefit them later on.

A 2012 poll from Gallup and the Lumina Foundation found that half of recent graduates have jobs that do not require a college degree. And earlier this year, the Center for College Affordability and Productivity painted a grimmer picture. Nearly half of all college graduates, not just recent graduates, held relatively low-paying and low-skilled jobs in 2010, the center’s study found.

But it’s not just recent graduates who report feeling disengaged at work. The Gallup poll surveyed American workers of all ages in several different occupations. The results were the same across all ages and occupations – college-educated workers are less likely to find their jobs fulfilling.

The implications of having a less-engaged workforce are significant, the survey says.

“As workplace engagement is itself a key to economic growth, a workforce with so many highly educated workers who are either not engaged or actively disengaged is bad for the U.S. economy,” the survey says.

Finding a solution to disengagement is important not just to the economy, but also to the educational system, according to the survey.

“The implications of this are so profound that it will literally change everything in higher education,” Busteed said. “From rethinking what its ultimate purpose should be, to the very basics of how we teach, coach, mentor, and develop learners.”

FX Outlook: Thin Conditions Dominate | Zero Hedge

The lack of participation in the global capital markets, in general, and the foreign exchange market, in particular, can make for erratic price action punctuating an eerie calm. Order flow and position adjustment (passive, as in triggering of stops, or more active ahead of year end) may exert greater influence than is often the case.Here is an overview on how we see the technical condition of the dollar against a selected group of foreign currencies into the year end.Euro: After posting a big reversal day on December 18 in response to the Fed’s tapering, the euro moved lower. In the following two sessions, (December 19-20), the euro slipped another half cent to test the initial retracement objective of the advance from early November (~$1.2755) that …

‘Twas 3 Nights Before Christmas (updated Nasdaq version)

‘Twas 3 Nights Before Christmas (updated Nasdaq version)

I’ve been posting and updating the “Twas 3 Nights Before Christmas” study on the blog here since 2008. The study will kick in at today’s close. This year I will again show the Nasdaq version of the study. While all the major indices have performed well during this period, the Nasdaq Composite stands out as the big winner. The stats in this table are strong across the board, and the note at the bottom shows reliability that has been nothing short of incredible. Traders may want to keep this one in mind over the next couple of weeks.

If You Want a New Year’s Resolution to Actually Succeed, Start Now

via The Simple Dollar:

Many people make New Year’s resolutions – I do it myself some years.

They’re usually made with the best of intentions, with the hopes of creating some level of self-improvement. They also usually start off like gangbusters and then fall by the wayside by the start of February.

Why does that happen?

For starters, resolutions are often poorly planned. People rarely think of them seriously – or at all – until very close to the turn of the year. Sometimes, they don’t even think about it until after the calendar flips.

Another problem is that the focus is on a very specific end result that sets up failure even in the face of success. “I’m going to lose fifty pounds this year” sounds impressive, as does “I’m going to pay off all of my credit cards this year.” The problem is that even if you lost 40 pounds this year or you paid off all but one credit card, you’re still going to “fail” in terms of your goal.

Also, “big” goals can be inspiring, but they also make it easy to just say “it’s impossible” and give up on it once you blow through that initial rush of effort. Speaking of which…

A third problem is overdoing it early on. You’ve decided to exercise four times a week. You hit the gym on January 2nd like a ton of other people and you do four miles on the treadmill. You feel pretty good, but a little bit worn out because you went from essentially doing nothing to walking/jogging four miles. You wake up the next day and your legs feel like lead, plus you have foot blisters. You’re miserable. You push yourself to go a few more times, but you begin to associate those gym trips with misery and before long, you’ve written off the goal.

Another example: you’ve decided to improve your diet, so the first three days you eat like a raw vegan. On the fourth day, you’re practically starving, so you decide to “cheat” a little and have a slice of pizza. That barely does anything at all to your pent-up hunger and a day or two later, you’re eating like you’re ravenous. See you later, diet!

Another example: you decide to cut down on your unnecessary expenses. You don’t splurge for a week, but then a friend calls you up to go do something fun that you wouldn’t have thought twice about before. You decide you’ve been “good” and go do it because it’s “social” and it’s not really “spending money.” At the end of the month, you realize you’ve spent almost as much as you did in December, so you decide it’s all foolishness and give up.

This type of pattern repeats itself over and over again with all kinds of goals.

So, how do you build a New Year’s resolution that actually works?

First, know yourself. No matter how much you believe in your goal, you’re not going to have drastically different behaviors or fitness level or anything after the year changes. Don’t choose a goal that would require you to exhibit a behavior for a year that you can’t even pull off for a few days in a row right now, because it’s not going to happen.

Second, set up a goal that allows you to succeed every day. Rather than saying, “I’m going to lose fifty pounds this year,” simply say that “I’m going to eat a ‘vegan before six’ diet each day this year” or “I’m going to put at least a quarter in a jar under the sink each day this year and live off of the rest of my income.” That way, the goal for success each day is really clear so you can judge your success or failure solely in the short term.

Third, set up a goal that’s easy to succeed at but puts you in a place to achieve more each day. Don’t make your daily goal something that you’re going to have trouble pulling off in a row of days. For example, if you’re not used to exercise, saying “I’m going to run three miles each day this year” is begging for failure. Instead, simply say “I’m going to stand on the treadmill and turn it on each day this year.” Why? Your goal really is to just go to the gym or the exercise room each day, because if you get yourself to that point, you’re likely to exercise at least a little bit.

For that “jar” goal I mentioned above, the simple act of going to that jar to put in money is the success, but in the act of doing so, you’re likely to want to put in as much money as you can each day because it feels like an even bigger win.

Finally, remind yourself of that goal. I like sending text reminders to myself at roughly the time of day where I’m most likely to do it. A text reminder to exercise at a time that’s right near my first morning “eye strain prevention” break can really push me to go exercise, for example.

Take what you want from the year. Break it down into a daily goal. Make that goal really easy to achieve. Make that goal one that puts you in a place to do even more so it feels like a “big win” each day. Remind yourself of that goal so that it’s right in your mind.

Why start now? Thinking through a goal like this takes thought. You have to think about where you’re at. You have to think about what you really want. You have to devise a goal that really works. Most importantly, you need to have whatever support you need for that goal in place before it starts so that you can step right into it.

Now’s the time to start planning.
