For farmers in some weak and troubled states, growing opium poppies or coca can be the only way to earn a decent income. Aid groups and governments are trying a new approach to successfully transition them away from these illicit crops for the long haul.

War-ravaged Afghanistan is the source of much of the world’s opium, and farmers there face many risks. Many have had their carefully cultivated poppy fields destroyed by intermittent government raids. If they manage to harvest, selling their crop means dealing with criminal or extremist organizations, including the Taliban. And while a successful poppy harvest can earn a farmer many times the best legal alternative, criminal processors and distributors make most of the profit from end products, like heroin and morphine.

The U.S. government and its aid arm, USAID, have allocated billions of dollars toward training Afghan farmers to grow legal crops like wheat, and for free or low-cost supplies like seeds. But these efforts have mostly failed to achieve long-term results. A principle reason: Afghan farmers lack what they need to make these new crops profitable.

“We are expecting [farmers] to produce tons of fruit and vegetables, to transport them on trucks they do not have, on roads that literally do not exist, to sell in globalized markets against which they cannot compete,” said Sanho Tree, a development expert and director of the Drug Policy Project.

One of these possible alternative crops is the pomegranate, an ancient and prized fruit in Afghanistan. Afghan varietals are widely known in agricultural circles for being especially delicious.

Demand for pomegranates in first world markets has spiked in recent years, as health food enthusiasts tout the fruit’s anti-oxidant superpowers. Rising demand and prices have created an opportunity to develop a sustainable supply chain from Afghan farmers to the outside world.

London-based Plant for Peace is working to create just that: a complete Afghan pomegranate export market, from startup seeds to paying customers. In 2011, the group worked with 800 Afghan farmers to plant more than 100,000 pomegranate saplings.

While Plant for Peace provides training and start-up supplies, the group's commercial partner, Funktional Foods Ltd., works to “develop and satisfy demand” for raw Afghan crops and more finished products, like fruit bars.

Working to create change in a place like Afghanistan can be daunting. A top official recently warned a U.S. Senate committee that opium production in Afghanistan surged in 2013 to an all-time high, despite 10 years and $7 billion worth of counter-narcotics efforts by the U.S.-backed Afghan government.

James Brett, founder of Plant for Peace, has seen his share of setbacks while working in Afghanistan. His admiration of the Afghan people and belief that providing a competitive livelihood to poppy farming could help create a lasting peace keeps him motivated

“Whenever I’ve gone to Afghanistan in the last six or seven years of my life, whatever home I’ve passed, whatever door I might have knocked, every door has been open,” he told his hometown newspaper in January. “They have nothing and they give their all.”

While the majority of the world’s opium comes from Afghanistan, Columbia and Peru are the dominant sources for another ancient crop that is used to make an illicit drug.

The coca leaf has been chewed or made into tea as a modest, caffeine-like stimulant in several indigenous Latin American cultures for thousands of years. Coca is also the principal ingredient in cocaine, however, and has largely been outlawed across the globe.

Impoverished farmers in these countries face many of the same incentives–and dangers–as Afghan poppy growers.USAID has had success stories in following the supply chain model over the last 10 years by partnering with the Colombian and Peruvian governments to provide more than just seeds.

These partnerships have helped farmers form large cooperatives and connections with international businesses who are interested in their newly grown crops, like cocoa and coffee beans.

Officials acknowledge that the gains are fragile, however. Colombia’s coca cultivation has declined from a peak in the mid-2000’s, but much of it may have simply migrated to neighboring Peru.

While helping to create a complete supply chain for alternative crops is generating some promising results, reducing international demand for illegal drugs may be the only long-term way for these crops to truly compete.

I have read hundreds of books on all sorts of financial topics — general money management, investing, retirement, and on and on. Unfortunately the vast majority of them aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. They are poorly written and contain little valuable information.

That said, there are many books that stand out for one reason or another — and I mean this in a positive way. They do have good information and are worth anyone’s time in reading.

However, there are only two books that I believe warrant a whole-hearted endorsement from me. They are both general money management books and both, if read and applied, will change a person’s financial life for the better (they have changed mine, that’s for sure). In fact, if applied over a lifetime, they will almost certainly make a person wealthy.

The Millionaire Next Door

I first read The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthystudy richest personal finance millionaire life kids investment income book babylon american personal finance shortly after it was published in 1996. I was out of graduate school, married, and a few years into my career. I had been working on eliminating debt from my life (yes, including my mortgage), but this book pushed my financial vision into over-drive.

The book’s message is that most millionaires in America aren’t the ones living in huge homes, driving expensive cars, and taking extravagant vacations. In reality the average American millionaire is just your typical guy next door. He’s unassuming and someone most people would never pick as being wealthy. That’s what made this book such a phenomenon — its findings turned conventional thinking on its head.

The book highlights seven common denominators among those who successfully build wealth. They are:

1. They live well below their means.

2. They allocate their time, energy, and money efficiently, in ways conducive to building wealth.

3. They believe that financial independence is more important than displaying high social status.

4. Their parents did not provide economic outpatient care.

5. Their adult children are economically self-sufficient.

6. They are proficient in targeting market opportunities.

7. They chose the right occupation.

After reading the book, I applied every one of the learnings above except #5 (since I don’t have adult children). And my finances benefitted greatly from doing so.

The Richest Man in Babylon

Shortly after reading The Millionaire Next Door, I stumbled upon The Richest Man in Babylon: George S. Clason’s Bestselling Guide to Financial Success: Saving Money and Putting It to Work for You, an equally life-changing personal finance book.

The Richest Man in Babylon is a parable of a wealthy man in ancient Babylon who gives a friend “seven cures for a lean purse” as follows (along with a summary of each):

Cure #1: Start Thy Purse to Fattening – Save 10% of your income.

Cure #2: Control Thy Expenses – Keep spending low.

Cure #3: Make Thy Gold Multiply – Invest to grow your wealth.

Cure #4: Guard Thy Treasures from Loss – Don’t lose money when you invest – protect your principal.

Cure #5: Make of Thy Dwelling a Profitable Investment – Own your own home.

Cure #6: Insure a Future Income – Turn your wealth into a retirement income.

Cure #7: Increase Thy Ability to Earn – Study to become wiser so you can make more money and manage it better.

Just look at those tips! All of them are extremely solid! I think we’ve heard a lot of these from the millionaires we’ve talked to.

Applying the concepts in these two books did one thing for me: made me a much, much better money manager. But really, if a person just read and applied either one of them over a decent period of time, he would be wealthy.

That’s why I can wholeheartedly recommend these books to ANYONE looking for a good book on personal finances. If you haven’t read either of them, do so immediately. Then do your loved ones a favor and have them read these — especially your kids, relatives you have that are graduating college and high school, and so forth. Doing so will change their lives forever and the earlier someone begins applying these principles, the better!

My goal over the next eighteen days is to write a first draft of a novel.

Eighteen days to get about 150,000 words of a rough draft down on paper. That’s on top of writing articles for The Simple Dollar and all of my other life responsibilities.

I’ve had this idea in my head for a long while and I decided that the best way to do something about it is to just get down to business. I also know enough about myself to know that I work best under pressure.

Over and over again in my life, I’ve found that if I set an incredibly difficult goal for myself over a month or two, I almost always find some way to rise to that challenge.

I turned our financial disaster into something that was at least tolerable in about a month.

I turned The Simple Dollar from a vague idea into a fully-designed site that was pushing out multiple posts a day within about three weeks.

I designed, from the bottom up, a rather complex scientific data interface in about a month and a half (in my previous career), something that I was told would take a team of people at least a year to do.

Setting an “impossible” short-term or mid-term goal drives me and pushes me to achieve something more than I would have ever believed that I could.

There’s only one question, though: why doesn’t this translate to long-term goals?

Whenever I try to bite off an “impossible” long term goal, I never seem to succeed. I think there are two reasons why.

First, burnout is an issue. If you bear down on something too hard for too long, you burn out. You completely lose your motivation to continue. With a shorter-term “impossible” goal, you achieve your goal before burnout occurs.

Second, the longer the term, the more likely it is that life will simply upend your goal. I can bear down on a short term goal for a few weeks and likely avoid any crises and also avoid any major family problems. If I turn a few weeks into six months, my odds of dodging a major crisis and also avoiding family problems becomes much, much more difficult.

A shorter “impossible” goal gives you some breathing room on either end, while a longer goal does not.

This brings us back to you.

What do you think you could accomplish in the next one to three months if you really, really devoted yourself to that cause? Could you sell off the half of your possessions that you don’t really use and move into a smaller place? Could you pay off your scariest debt? Could you write the first draft of a book? Could you put the foundations in place for that great business you’ve dreamed of?

Never let the thought that it’s “impossible” stop you from trying. Sure, sometimes you’ll fail and fall flat on your face, but you’ll learn a lot from that process.

What could you accomplish before the end of the year if you really gave it your all? It might just be more than you think.

Is global heating hiding out in the oceans? Parts of Pacific warming 15 times faster than in past 10,000 years

In a reconstruction of Pacific Ocean temperatures in the last 10,000 years, researchers have found that its middle depths have warmed 15 times faster in the last 60 years than they did during apparent natural warming cycles in the previous 10,000.

via ScienceDaily: Top Science News:

Oct. 31, 2013 — A recent slowdown in global warming has led some skeptics to renew their claims that industrial carbon emissions are not causing a century-long rise in Earth’s surface temperatures. But rather than letting humans off the hook, a new study in the leading journal Science adds support to the idea that the oceans are taking up some of the excess heat, at least for the moment. In a reconstruction of Pacific Ocean temperatures in the last 10,000 years, researchers have found that its middle depths have warmed 15 times faster in the last 60 years than they did during apparent natural warming cycles in the previous 10,000.”We’re experimenting by putting all this heat in the ocean without quite knowing how it’s going to come back out and affect climate,” said study coauthor Braddock Linsley, a climate scientist at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. “It’s not so much the magnitude of the change, but the rate of change.”In its latest report, released in September, the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) noted the recent slowdown in the rate of global warming. While global temperatures rose by about one-fifth of a degree Fahrenheit per decade from the 1950s through 1990s, warming slowed to just half that rate after the record hot year of 1998. The IPCC has attributed the pause to natural climate fluctuations caused by volcanic eruptions, changes in solar intensity, and the movement of heat through the ocean. Many scientists note that 1998 was an exceptionally hot year even by modern standards, and so any average rise using it as a starting point would downplay the longer-term warming trend. The IPCC scientists agree that much of the heat that humans have put into the atmosphere since the 1970s through greenhouse gas emissions probably has been absorbed by the ocean. However, the findings in Science put this idea into a long-term context, and suggest that the oceans may be storing even more of the effects of human emissions than scientists have so far realized. “We may have underestimated the efficiency of the oceans as a storehouse for heat and energy,” said study lead author, Yair Rosenthal, a climate scientist at Rutgers University. …

via ScienceDaily: Top Health News:

Oct. 31, 2013 — Researchers at Johns Hopkins say they have found that a gene already implicated in human speech disorders and epilepsy is also needed for vocalizations and synapse formation in mice. The finding, they say, adds to scientific understanding of how language develops, as well as the way synapses — the connections among brain cells that enable us to think — are formed. A description of their experiments appears in Science Express on Oct. 31.A group led by Richard Huganir, Ph.D., director of the Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, set out to investigate genes involved in synapse formation. Gek-Ming Sia, Ph.D., a research associate in Huganir’s laboratory, first screened hundreds of human genes for their effects on lab-grown mouse brain cells. When one gene, SRPX2, was turned up higher than normal, it caused the brain cells to erupt with new synapses, Sia found. When Huganir’s team injected fetal mice with an SRPX2-blocking compound, the mice showed fewer synapses than normal mice even as adults, the researchers found. In addition, when SRPX2-deficient mouse pups were separated from their mothers, they did not emit high-pitched distress calls as other pups do, indicating they lacked the rodent equivalent of early language ability.Other researchers’ analyses of the human genome have found that mutations in SRPX2 are associated with language disorders and epilepsy, and when Huganir’s team injected the human SRPX2 with the same mutations into the fetal mice, they also had deficits in their vocalization as young pups.Another research group at Institut de Neurobiologie de la Méditerranée in France had previously shown that SRPX2 interacts with FoxP2, a gene that has gained wide attention for its apparently crucial role in language ability. Huganir’s team confirmed this, showing that FoxP2 controls how much protein the SRPX2 gene makes and may affect language in this way. …

Like humans, young rats that give birth have a reduced risk of breast cancer later in life. But a new study shows that this protective effect in animals is negated if they’re exposed to an obesity-linked hormone during pregnancy.

via ScienceDaily: Top Health News:

Oct. 29, 2013 — Like humans, young rats that give birth have a reduced risk of breast cancer later in life. But a new study shows that this protective effect in animals is negated if they’re exposed to an obesity-linked hormone during pregnancy. The study, to be published online Nov. 1 in Cancer Prevention Research by Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center scientists, suggests an important direction for research in women’s health, particularly given obesity rates worldwide. In humans, pregnancy initially increases breast cancer risk within the first five to seven years after birth, and then either permanently reduces the risk by nearly half in younger women, or increases the risk in women older than 30. The same pattern is seen in rats. The link between obesity, pregnancy and breast cancer risk is only now being explored.”We know that pregnant women who gain an excessive amount of weight have high blood levels of leptin — a hormone made by fat tissue — and that they have an increased risk of developing breast cancer after menopause,” explains Leena Hilakivi-Clarke, PhD, a professor of oncology at Georgetown Lombardi, and lead author of the new study. “By studying these factors in animals, we hope to understand how they’re linked.”For the study, the researchers looked at breast cancer risk after pregnant rats were exposed to leptin and what, if any, gene changes could be observed.Their findings showed that similar to women, female rats had an initial increase in breast cancer risk after birth, but the risk eventually diminished to a level that was lower than in rats that did not give birth.”This suggests pregnancy has a life-long protective effect against breast cancer in animals as it does in women,” Hilakivi-Clarke explains. But breast cancer risk in the rats exposed to leptin during pregnancy did not decrease. “This is concerning, as it suggests the exposure to the obesity-linked hormone negated the protective effect of birth on breast cancer risk.”To discover possible reasons for the differences in breast cancer risk, the researchers looked at gene patterns in the mammary glands of all the rats. “We saw a much different pattern among the rat groups,” Hilakivi-Clarke says.In women and animals, pregnancy permanently turns on genes that allow healthy breast cells to protect themselves against insults that can initiate cancer. These gene changes are believed to explain the dramatic drop in breast cancer risk in women who had a child before age 20.”It appears that treating rats with leptin during pregnancy prevented the protective changes in genes from happening,” Hilakivi-Clarke explains. “This work points to an important direction for research to prevent breast cancer in women since obesity is an epidemic,” Hilakivi-Clarke concludes.

via The Simple Dollar:

Every single one of us makes mistakes.

We sleep in too late. We forget to call someone. We spend more money than we should. We eat a ridiculously unhealthy meal. We don’t put in full effort at work. We forget an appointment.

Whenever I make a significant mistake, two things happen. First, I have to deal with the consequences of the mistake. I have to make things right, in other words. Second, I look for ways so that I don’t have to repeat that mistake.

After all, in the words of George Santayana: “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Sometimes I’m successful at finding ways to avoid repeating mistakes. Sometimes, I’m not and the mistake repeats itself.

Still, I’ve found that after watching my own repeated fumbles and occasional successes at overcoming mistakes, one simple thing works above all else in terms of eliminating a repeat of that mistake.

I simply change something about my routine.

Something I did in the course of my regular routine caused me to make this mistake, so it is vital that I dig down and figure out what part of my routine caused that mis-step and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

That’s harder than it sounds, and it’s also kind of vague, so I’ll give you a detailed example.

Let’s say I bought more books than I should have while visiting a bookstore. It’s a common mistake I used to make.

At first, I believed the poor routine to be the fact that I drove by a bookstore on my way home from work, which made it really easy to give into temptation.

This drastically reduced the frequency of overspending at bookstores, but it didn’t solve the problem.

Next, I figured that the problem might be solo trips to bookstores, but that turned out not to be the problem, either.

Eventually, I figured it out. If I am in a bookstore and I allow myself to browse, I am simply going to talk myself into buying a book. The longer I browse, the more books wind up under my arm.

The solution, then, is to only go to bookstores when I have a spending allowance and only when I have a specific item in mind that I’m looking for. In other words, the problem was the routine of browsing in a bookstore.

Once I realized that, I changed one simple thing about my routine. I do not go into bookstores at all unless I’ve decided in advance that I can spend a certain amount there or I have a very specific purchase that causes me to completely avoid browsing. If neither of those things are true, I simply don’t go to bookstores. They’re very dangerous places for my wallet.

I made a mistake, so I looked at the routine that led me to that mistake – driving by a bookstore each day. I changed that routine and it cut down on the mistakes.
