Dealing with human waste has become a health crisis in many poor communities, but residents of a Kenyan slum have found a solution that turns poop into profit.

Working directly with residents of Mukuru, one of Nairobi’s largest slums, an MIT spin-off company called Sanergy has developed a promising new method to improve sanitation. Instead of promoting sanitation through education, Sanergy has addressed the core reason why many residents must still defecate in pits or in the street: a lack of access to toilets.

But contrary to the idea behind last year’s Reinvent the Toilet Challenge by the Gates Foundation, Sanergy co-founder David Auerbach says that access to innovative toilets alone isn’t enough to spread sanitation practices.

“When it comes to sanitation, it’s no longer a question of, ‘Can you bring someone a good toilet?’” said Auerbach. “If that’s the answer we would have already solved it.”

“You need to address the entire sanitation value chain to solve the challenge,” he continued.

Sanergy’s toilets are low-tech and low-cost, but they have a key feature: they come with removable waste cartridges. Local entrepreneurs buy and operate the toilets, charging users a small monthly membership fee. Sanergy then collects the waste and processes it into organic, sellable fertilizer. Soon the company plans to process the waste into biogas, biochar and several types of plastic, as well.

Creating business relationships means that toilet operators earn steady income from their investments and waste treatment pays for itself. It benefits people you would expect like the toilet users who now have access to a clean and private space to go to the bathroom, and people you wouldn’t like the farmers who pay less for the processed, organic fertilizer.

sanergy project private president people mit king human competition company social entrepeneurship

Around the world, a lack of sanitation put 2.5 billion people at risk of diseases like dysentery, cholera, typhus fever and typhoid. Every year 1.6 million children die from preventable, sanitation-related diseases. A lack of clean toilets and clean water is “a compound magnifier of poverty, ill-health and mortality,” said U.N. General Assembly President John Ashe.

Sanergy grew out of a MIT class on building entrepreneurial ventures in developing countries. When students learned the depth of the global sanitation problem, they saw a business opportunity. Human waste, they believed, didn't have to be waste at all.

Sanergy’s answer is ‘no.’ Since opening its first toilet for business in 2011, the company has installed 330 toilets, collected 1,800 tons of waste and created 350 jobs in Mukuru, an area with 40 percent unemployment.

Local toilet operator Agnes Kwamboka says the project changed her life. Before working with Sanergy, Kwamboka sold an illicit beer called chang’aa to support her family.

“People look at you and think you are a prostitute,” Kwamboka said about that time of her life. “When I used to sell chang’aa, many men used to enter my stall. They thought they could just use me like a broom. Policemen used to demand a bribe of 500 shillings each day.”

Now, as a Fresh Life Toilet operator, Kwamboka feels secure. “The Fresh Life Toilet has given me peace of mind. My children used to steal, but now they don’t have to,” she said. “I keep all my profits and I’m able to provide for my family and also pay off my debts.”

Sanergy aims to expand in Mukuru and start producing renewable energy as well from the collected human waste. The company’s founders hope to expand into other areas in Kenya, then Africa, and eventually into Asia, where sanitation needs are critical.

Right now, though, the company is focused on its work in Mukuru. “We need to get it right in the community we’re serving first,” Auerback said.

The project has won widespread recognition. It took first in the 2011 MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition and has received awards from MassChallenge, MIT’s Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship, and the Lemelson Foundation.

What makes Sanergy’s project so strong? It is a great example of developing a sanitation solution that is scalable and sustainable.

  • Market-driven. Participants pay, but the benefits they gain far outweigh the cost. For example, people get to use safe, clean and private bathrooms for a small monthly fee. The toilet operators must invest in their business, but they earn more than enough to pay back that investment and support their families.

  • Fits local needs. Sanergy focused on addressing major local issues, such as the lack of sanitation and unemployment, and tapped into the existing entrepreneurial spirit. And to make sure the project would be locally profitable, Sanergy tested toilet and waste processing designs in Mukuru and another slum, Kibera, before scaling up the project.

  • Sanergy’s work connects participants and innovates new solutions as needed. Pay toilets already existed in Mukuru, but they were not designed so that the waste could be collected. Toilet owners had a hard time making a profit. In addition to creating a better toilet design, Sanergy also developed the waste-to-fertilizer factories–the major gap in the value chain from poopers to planters.

But the most exciting feature of Sanergy’s sanitation value chain is that it can be used anywhere. Sanergy’s success in Mukuru shows that sanitation can be solved around the globe.

For farmers in some weak and troubled states, growing opium poppies or coca can be the only way to earn a decent income. Aid groups and governments are trying a new approach to successfully transition them away from these illicit crops for the long haul.

War-ravaged Afghanistan is the source of much of the world’s opium, and farmers there face many risks. Many have had their carefully cultivated poppy fields destroyed by intermittent government raids. If they manage to harvest, selling their crop means dealing with criminal or extremist organizations, including the Taliban. And while a successful poppy harvest can earn a farmer many times the best legal alternative, criminal processors and distributors make most of the profit from end products, like heroin and morphine.

The U.S. government and its aid arm, USAID, have allocated billions of dollars toward training Afghan farmers to grow legal crops like wheat, and for free or low-cost supplies like seeds. But these efforts have mostly failed to achieve long-term results. A principle reason: Afghan farmers lack what they need to make these new crops profitable.

“We are expecting [farmers] to produce tons of fruit and vegetables, to transport them on trucks they do not have, on roads that literally do not exist, to sell in globalized markets against which they cannot compete,” said Sanho Tree, a development expert and director of the Drug Policy Project.

One of these possible alternative crops is the pomegranate, an ancient and prized fruit in Afghanistan. Afghan varietals are widely known in agricultural circles for being especially delicious.

Demand for pomegranates in first world markets has spiked in recent years, as health food enthusiasts tout the fruit’s anti-oxidant superpowers. Rising demand and prices have created an opportunity to develop a sustainable supply chain from Afghan farmers to the outside world.

London-based Plant for Peace is working to create just that: a complete Afghan pomegranate export market, from startup seeds to paying customers. In 2011, the group worked with 800 Afghan farmers to plant more than 100,000 pomegranate saplings.

While Plant for Peace provides training and start-up supplies, the group's commercial partner, Funktional Foods Ltd., works to “develop and satisfy demand” for raw Afghan crops and more finished products, like fruit bars.

Working to create change in a place like Afghanistan can be daunting. A top official recently warned a U.S. Senate committee that opium production in Afghanistan surged in 2013 to an all-time high, despite 10 years and $7 billion worth of counter-narcotics efforts by the U.S.-backed Afghan government.

James Brett, founder of Plant for Peace, has seen his share of setbacks while working in Afghanistan. His admiration of the Afghan people and belief that providing a competitive livelihood to poppy farming could help create a lasting peace keeps him motivated

“Whenever I’ve gone to Afghanistan in the last six or seven years of my life, whatever home I’ve passed, whatever door I might have knocked, every door has been open,” he told his hometown newspaper in January. “They have nothing and they give their all.”

While the majority of the world’s opium comes from Afghanistan, Columbia and Peru are the dominant sources for another ancient crop that is used to make an illicit drug.

The coca leaf has been chewed or made into tea as a modest, caffeine-like stimulant in several indigenous Latin American cultures for thousands of years. Coca is also the principal ingredient in cocaine, however, and has largely been outlawed across the globe.

Impoverished farmers in these countries face many of the same incentives–and dangers–as Afghan poppy growers.USAID has had success stories in following the supply chain model over the last 10 years by partnering with the Colombian and Peruvian governments to provide more than just seeds.

These partnerships have helped farmers form large cooperatives and connections with international businesses who are interested in their newly grown crops, like cocoa and coffee beans.

Officials acknowledge that the gains are fragile, however. Colombia’s coca cultivation has declined from a peak in the mid-2000’s, but much of it may have simply migrated to neighboring Peru.

While helping to create a complete supply chain for alternative crops is generating some promising results, reducing international demand for illegal drugs may be the only long-term way for these crops to truly compete.

Although we’re still in the midst of the holiday season, it’s time to start making post-holiday shopping plans. For those of us who try to be frugally-minded, after-Christmas sales offer an excellent opportunity to save money and plan ahead. Even if you don’t actually buy anything in the immediate aftermath of the holiday season, now is a good time to start planning for next year. And not just Christmas or Hanukkah: Valentine’s Day, Mothers and Fathers Days, and birthdays, as well.

Many times, for me at least, gifts sneak up and become unexpected expenses that can throw off my budget for a week or two. As important as it is to save money when buying gifts, planning ahead and budgeting appropriately can have just as positive an effect on your fiscal bottom line. For the most part, though, gift giving occasions are not really surprises. We know long in advance when we will have to pony up for our friends and loved ones. With the new year approaching, what better time could there be than now planning our fiscal generosity over the next twelve months?

Project and Budget

Look at all your gift giving occasions coming up in the next year. Gauge the importance of the occasion and how much you feel it is necessary to spend on each person for each occasion. Your mom’s birthday may require a bigger gift than your best friend’s cousin’s bar mitzvah, for example. Then total the amount that you will need for the year. That will be your twelve-month target savings amount.

Unfortunately, though, gift-giving occasions are not distributed evenly throughout the year. In my own case, I have two very concentrated stretches from February to April (thank you IRS for that extra bit of stress) and again in August and September. Of course, December can be tough for many of us, as well. So you will have to use shorter term targets, at least in the first year, while planning your gift giving. It helps to have a dedicated account — even if it’s just a mayonnaise jar on a shelf — for gift giving. Using myself as an example, I need to save more from January to April to take care of the gift giving occasions that come up during those months, than I will in the ensuing months during which I’ll have more time and can salt away smaller amounts over a longer period of time. Putting them in a different place will help you keep gift funds segregated so that they don’t commingle with your other money, thus keeping the rest of your budget on track and cutting down on any possibility for fiscal confusion.

Be Creative with Gifts (at Least During the College Years)

We are trying to be frugal. We want to get through college with a degree and with as little debt as possible. In order to accomplish this, it is possible that we may need to reframe some of our gift-giving ideas. Especially if you are a student who is paying your own way through college, people will be understanding. If they’re not, they probably don’t deserve a gift anyway.

Financial planner and author Ken Clark suggests writing meaningful letters to people rather than buying and giving gifts. According to Clark, “I’ve forgotten who gave me 90 percent of the gifts I’ve ever received and half of them don’t even get used anymore…. Chances are they’ll keep that letter a lot longer than that new sweater.” A letter is a great idea, but if you have a talent or a craftiness and want to do something more substantial, you can make something for your recipients.

I know its seems a little elementary school, but people on your list will happily accept handmade gifts from you while you’re toiling away in academia. Even if they’re not happy about it, they won’t say anything. During my undergraduate years, for example, I drew cityscapes of the downtown area near the university and matted them. These I gave as gifts to some of my out of town relatives who I knew would be more appreciative of them than some of my other potential gift receivers (i.e. my younger brother).

Apart from after-Christmas sales and making your own presents, you can just be creative in the way that you buy things. Look at CraigsList and eBay for deals on second-hand or used items that would make people on your list happy. If you have specific things in mind well ahead of the gift giving occasion, set up an alert for the items and keep an eye out so that you can get the best deals on them. There’s nothing a seller loves to see more than a last minute shopper who absolutely has to have the item that they are selling RIGHT NOW.

Plan ahead. Budget wisely. Be creative, and shop smart. Do these things and shopping for gifts will have a less negative impact on your college budget.

How did supermassive black holes grow so big?

Galaxies may look pretty and delicate, with their swirls of stars of many colors — but don’t be fooled. At the heart of every galaxy, including our own Milky Way, lies a supermassive black hole.

Oct. 23, 2013 — A paper in a recent issue of the journal Science [18 October] pits the front-running ideas about the growth of supermassive black holes against observational data — a limit on the strength of gravitational waves from pairs of black holes, obtained with CSIRO’s 64-m Parkes radio telescope in eastern Australia. The study was jointly led by Dr Ryan Shannon, a Postdoctoral Fellow with CSIRO, and Mr Vikram Ravi, a PhD student co-supervised by the University of Melbourne (Australia) and CSIRO.”For the first time, we’ve used information about gravitational waves as a tool in astrophysics,” said Dr Shannon.”It’s a powerful new tool. These black holes are very hard to observe directly, so this is a new chapter in astronomy.””One model for black-hole growth has failed our test and we’re painting the others into a corner. They may not break, but they’ll have to bend,” said Mr Ravi.Einstein predicted gravitational waves — ripples in space-time, generated by bodies changing speed or direction. Bodies, for instance, such as pairs of black holes orbiting each other. When galaxies merge, their resident central black holes are doomed to meet. They first waltz together then enter a desperate embrace and merge.”Theorists predict that towards the end of this dance they’re growling out gravitational waves at a frequency we’re set up to detect,” Dr Shannon said.Played out again and again across the Universe, such encounters create a background of gravitational waves, like the noise from a restless crowd.Astronomers have been searching for gravitational waves with the Parkes radio telescope and a set of 20 small, spinning stars called pulsars.Pulsars act as extremely precise clocks in space. We measure when their pulses arrive on Earth to within a tenth of a microsecond. As gravitational waves roll through an area of space-time, they temporarily swell or shrink the distances between objects in that region. “That can alter the arrival time of the pulses on Earth,” said Dr Michael Keith of the University of Manchester in the UK.The Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) project and an earlier collaboration between CSIRO and Swinburne University together provide nearly 20 years’ worth of timing data.”We haven’t yet detected gravitational waves outright, but we’re now into the right ballpark to do so,” said the project leader, CSIRO’s Dr George Hobbs.Combining pulsar-timing data from Parkes with that from other telescopes in Europe and the USA — a total of about 50 pulsars — should give us the accuracy to detect gravitational waves “within ten years,” he said.Meanwhile, the PPTA results are showing us how low the background rate of gravitational waves is.The strength of the gravitational wave background depends on how often supermassive black holes spiral together and merge, how massive they are, and how far away they are. So if the background is low, that puts a limit on one or more of those factors.Armed with the PPTA data, the researchers tested four models of black-hole growth. They effectively ruled out black holes gaining mass only through mergers, but the other three models “are still in the game,” said Dr Sarah Burke-Spolaor of California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

L’acquisto di uno SmartPhone rappresenta sempre un momento particolare…AJAXAjax is the acronym for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML and is a group of interrelated web development techniques used on the client-side to create asynchronous web applications. With Ajax, web applications can send data to, and retrieve data from, a server asynchronously (in the background) without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page. Data can be retrieved using the XMLHttpRequest object. Despite the name, the use of XML is not required (JSON is often used instead), and the requests do not need to be asynchronous. AJAX is not a new programming language, but a new way to use existing standards. AJAX is the right way of exchanging data with a server, and updating parts …
