Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.
1. Kennedy on conformity
“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” – John F. Kennedy
It’s pretty hard to have different results than the people around you if you’re doing everything just like the people around you.
2. Evgeni Koroliov playing Bach’s 107 Canon alla Ottava
Short, sweet, and breathtaking.
3. C. S. Lewis on gradual change
“Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back, everything is different.” – C. S. Lewis
It’s easy to find milestones when you look back, but at the time, those milestones often seem like normal days.
4. A natural stone bridge in the Badlands
As I mentioned a few days ago, I’m planning on visiting all of the national parks in the next several years. The Badlands are one of the closest to where I live. Thanks to the National Archives for the image.
5. William James on thinking without thinking
“A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.” – William James
If you’ve ever found yourself nodding in agreement over and over again while listening to a radio or television program, this quote is there.
6. Carl Rogers on people
“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don’t find myself saying, ‘Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner.’ I don’t try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.” – Carl Rogers
This is one of the most difficult balances of parenting. When is correcting them merely enforcing conformity? Sometimes, it’s obvious, but at other times, it’s a grey area.
7. Acadia
Acadia, on the other hand, is quite far away from Iowa, as it is located in Maine. Thanks to Doug Kerr for the image.
8. Steve Prefontaine on doing your best
“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” – Steve Prefontaine
Whatever your talents are, it’s a shame to let them go to waste.
9. Smoky Mountains
However, Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee is likely the first one we will visit, early this summer. Thanks to E Photos for this image.
10. Hemingway on listening
“When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” – Ernest Hemingway
In conversation, it’s far too easy to just spend your time thinking about the next thing you want to say instead of actually listening to what the other people are saying. I find that the next thing to say usually comes almost automatically if I simply focus on listening.
