If You Want a New Year’s Resolution to Actually Succeed, Start Now

via The Simple Dollar:

Many people make New Year’s resolutions – I do it myself some years.

They’re usually made with the best of intentions, with the hopes of creating some level of self-improvement. They also usually start off like gangbusters and then fall by the wayside by the start of February.

Why does that happen?

For starters, resolutions are often poorly planned. People rarely think of them seriously – or at all – until very close to the turn of the year. Sometimes, they don’t even think about it until after the calendar flips.

Another problem is that the focus is on a very specific end result that sets up failure even in the face of success. “I’m going to lose fifty pounds this year” sounds impressive, as does “I’m going to pay off all of my credit cards this year.” The problem is that even if you lost 40 pounds this year or you paid off all but one credit card, you’re still going to “fail” in terms of your goal.

Also, “big” goals can be inspiring, but they also make it easy to just say “it’s impossible” and give up on it once you blow through that initial rush of effort. Speaking of which…

A third problem is overdoing it early on. You’ve decided to exercise four times a week. You hit the gym on January 2nd like a ton of other people and you do four miles on the treadmill. You feel pretty good, but a little bit worn out because you went from essentially doing nothing to walking/jogging four miles. You wake up the next day and your legs feel like lead, plus you have foot blisters. You’re miserable. You push yourself to go a few more times, but you begin to associate those gym trips with misery and before long, you’ve written off the goal.

Another example: you’ve decided to improve your diet, so the first three days you eat like a raw vegan. On the fourth day, you’re practically starving, so you decide to “cheat” a little and have a slice of pizza. That barely does anything at all to your pent-up hunger and a day or two later, you’re eating like you’re ravenous. See you later, diet!

Another example: you decide to cut down on your unnecessary expenses. You don’t splurge for a week, but then a friend calls you up to go do something fun that you wouldn’t have thought twice about before. You decide you’ve been “good” and go do it because it’s “social” and it’s not really “spending money.” At the end of the month, you realize you’ve spent almost as much as you did in December, so you decide it’s all foolishness and give up.

This type of pattern repeats itself over and over again with all kinds of goals.

So, how do you build a New Year’s resolution that actually works?

First, know yourself. No matter how much you believe in your goal, you’re not going to have drastically different behaviors or fitness level or anything after the year changes. Don’t choose a goal that would require you to exhibit a behavior for a year that you can’t even pull off for a few days in a row right now, because it’s not going to happen.

Second, set up a goal that allows you to succeed every day. Rather than saying, “I’m going to lose fifty pounds this year,” simply say that “I’m going to eat a ‘vegan before six’ diet each day this year” or “I’m going to put at least a quarter in a jar under the sink each day this year and live off of the rest of my income.” That way, the goal for success each day is really clear so you can judge your success or failure solely in the short term.

Third, set up a goal that’s easy to succeed at but puts you in a place to achieve more each day. Don’t make your daily goal something that you’re going to have trouble pulling off in a row of days. For example, if you’re not used to exercise, saying “I’m going to run three miles each day this year” is begging for failure. Instead, simply say “I’m going to stand on the treadmill and turn it on each day this year.” Why? Your goal really is to just go to the gym or the exercise room each day, because if you get yourself to that point, you’re likely to exercise at least a little bit.

For that “jar” goal I mentioned above, the simple act of going to that jar to put in money is the success, but in the act of doing so, you’re likely to want to put in as much money as you can each day because it feels like an even bigger win.

Finally, remind yourself of that goal. I like sending text reminders to myself at roughly the time of day where I’m most likely to do it. A text reminder to exercise at a time that’s right near my first morning “eye strain prevention” break can really push me to go exercise, for example.

Take what you want from the year. Break it down into a daily goal. Make that goal really easy to achieve. Make that goal one that puts you in a place to do even more so it feels like a “big win” each day. Remind yourself of that goal so that it’s right in your mind.

Why start now? Thinking through a goal like this takes thought. You have to think about where you’re at. You have to think about what you really want. You have to devise a goal that really works. Most importantly, you need to have whatever support you need for that goal in place before it starts so that you can step right into it.

Now’s the time to start planning.

Is Innovation Destroying Jobs? Or Creating Them?

Is Innovation Destroying Jobs? Or Creating Them?

via MoneyNing:

There’s been a flood of technological advancements in the last few decades, many of which have dramatically streamlined processes in our everyday lives. These innovations have led to more efficiency in many sectors, including business and manufacturing.

As a result, some outdated systems, equipment, and job titles are quickly becoming obsolete. Businesses or even entire fields have gone under, a mass of unemployed workers in their wake.

We’ve seen this happen most clearly in manufacturing. Robotics and automation have increased production efficiency and eliminated the need to employ as many workers, forcing many people to seek entirely new careers later in life.

When Innovation Affects Your Career

Being unexpectedly forced to change careers, or the focus of your company, can be traumatic and life-altering. It also leaves everyone feeling a little less secure about their future (if it happened to others, it can happen to you).

There’s no doubt that finding yourself suddenly unemployed is a difficult situation. If you have little or no savings set aside, your finances will be strained and your lifestyle threatened.

Finding a new job may also prove difficult, because you have to either:

  • Settle for a job below your skill level and/or current salary

  • Learn a new trade or return to college to acquire a new degree

These steps aren’t easy and can cause financial stress, but are necessary in order to move on. Many people do both: settling for a lower-paying job temporarily while completing training for a new career.

Because of these effects, it’s easy to see why people have been opposed to technological advancements throughout the years.

But are advancing technology and innovation really to blame for unemployment? Well, yes and no.

Innovation = Loss of Jobs

In the short term, yes, certain advancements will immediately result in a loss of jobs. The more large-scale the advancement, the greater the number of displaced workers. We can see this demonstrated in history during any major change to industry.

It’s no wonder many people are distrustful of new technology in the form of robotics and computerization; being replaced by a machine is a fate no one desires. It’s also natural to blame companies who benefit from technological advancements that enable them to downsize their workforce and, therefore, reap a higher profit.

Innovation = Future Opportunities

On the other hand, though innovation in science, engineering, and mechanics will cause immediate losses, it’ll also create equal, if not greater, opportunities in the future. Innovations save everyone time, money, energy, and other resources while increasing efficiency and efficacy. Even though there are some negative effects due to the changes they require, the ultimate result is usually good.

What’s more, advancements almost always create new jobs, opportunities for growth, and new business opportunities.

Even losing your job and being forced to return to college or trade school can be a blessing in disguise. We all know that it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and lose our ability to adapt and learn new things. Would you rather be very good at one thing (that may lose its usefulness) or be moderately good at many things?

Being forced to to learn a new skill set or begin a new career enables us to better ourselves by:

  • Revealing hidden talents, abilities, and aptitudes

  • Utilizing abilities we’re good at or enjoy, but weren’t able to use before

Since technology and career fields are changing so fast, it’s necessary to do market research into your chosen field to see if there’s room to grow, or if the demand for that job is dying out. You may still be caught off guard, but if you’re willing to learn, work hard, and, most importantly, change with the changing of the times, you’ll have no difficulty finding your new niche and means of financial security.

What do you think? Is innovation helping or hurting our jobs?

Week in FX Americas – Canadian Dollar A Thanksgiving Target

Week in FX Americas – Canadian Dollar A Thanksgiving Target

via MarketPulse:

Everyone and their mother must have heard Goldman’s recommendation for the loonie earlier this week – “Sell Mortimer, Sell.” It’s certainly not new news to the forex market; however, their target is a tad steeper than most – 88c or $1.12CAD within a year.

The Goldman team have highlighted that “since the global financial crisis, significant external imbalances have built up in the Canadian economy.” In 2008, the current account balance fell from a surplus of +1% of GDP to a deficit of -3% – and it has remained stable at this level ever since. The main culprit has been a decline in manufacturing exports, which has fallen by about -30% in five-years.

Goldman notes that capital flowing into the economy of the US’s largest trading partner has slowed markedly, and interest rates are low, and are expected to stay there. This is in contrast to the IMF’s way of thinking that sees the CAD benchmark-lending rate doubling by the end of 2015. Interest rate differential plays a big part; the BoC would never allow Canadian rates to move too far away from the US overnight.

Many continue to see the loonie as being overvalued, but nothing like Governor Stevens Aussie dollar. Combined with the weak current account position, there are good fundamental reasons for a weaker CAD. The commodity sensitive economy needs to see an improvement in Canada’s resource product prices and a measured pick-up on global growth in order to see the current account deficit actually narrow.

Foreign direct investment has slowed for the second consecutive quarter while that by Canadians rose. The current account deficit shows that Canada remains dependent on capital inflows. Analysts note that a high percentage of those inflows are coming in the form of “easily-reversible portfolio investments” – which leaves the loonie vulnerable especially if investor confidence turns sour on Canada. Obviously a stronger US economy and softer CAD would help narrow the gap.

The loonie ends the week trading at a two-year low north of $1.06 erasing earlier gains after a better than expected Q3 GDP report (+2.7%). Low liquidity exasperated the CAD slide in this holiday shortened trading week. Market momentum continues to favor the US dollar – dollar-buying orders are beginning to stack up below ahead of 1.0550 level. Dollar sellers are raising their orders.

Oil Flat Due to Higher Inventory

via MarketPulse:

West Texas Intermediate traded near the lowest price in almost six months and at the steepest discount to Brent since March, as crude stockpiles rose for a 10th week in the U.S., the world’s biggest oil consumer.

Futures were little changed in New York after declining 1.5 percent yesterday, the most in two weeks. Crude inventories climbed by 2.95 million barrels to 391.4 million, the highest level since June, Energy Information Administration data show. Supplies were forecast to increase by 750,000 barrels, according to a Bloomberg News survey. Oil’s moving averages have formed a “death cross,” a bearish technical signal.

via ScienceDaily: Top Science News:

Nov. 27, 2013 — Two months ago astronomers created a new 3D map of stars at the centre of our Galaxy (the Milky Way), showing more clearly than ever the bulge at its core. Previous explanations suggested that the stars that form the bulge are in banana-like orbits, but a paper published this week in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society suggests that the stars probably move in peanut-shell or figure of eight-shaped orbits instead. The difference is important; astronomers develop theories of star motions to not only understand how the stars in our galaxy are moving today but also how our galaxy formed and evolves. The Milky Way is shaped like a spiral, with a region of stars at the centre known as the “bar,” because of its shape. In the middle of this region, there is a “bulge” that expands out vertically. In the new work Alice Quillen, professor of astronomy at the University of Rochester, and her collaborators created a mathematical model of what might be happening at the centre of the Milky Way. Unlike the Solar System where most of the gravitational pull comes from the Sun and is simple to model, it is much harder to describe the gravitational field near the centre of the Galaxy, where millions of stars, vast clouds of dust, and even dark matter swirl about. In this case, Quillen and her colleagues considered the forces acting on the stars in or near the bulge. As the stars go round in their orbits, they also move above or below the plane of the bar. When stars cross the plane they get a little push, like a child on a swing. At the resonance point, which is a point a certain distance from the centre of the bar, the timing of the pushes on the stars is such that this effect is strong enough to make the stars at this point move up higher above the plane. (It is like when a child on the swing has been pushed a little every time and eventually is swinging higher.) These stars are pushed out from the edge of the bulge. The resonance at this point means that stars undergo two vertical oscillations for every orbital period. …

App Engine using MySQL, PHP and Ajax – open to bidding by midnightgameclub

L’acquisto di uno SmartPhone rappresenta sempre un momento particolare…AJAXAjax is the acronym for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML and is a group of interrelated web development techniques used on the client-side to create asynchronous web applications. With Ajax, web applications can send data to, and retrieve data from, a server asynchronously (in the background) without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page. Data can be retrieved using the XMLHttpRequest object. Despite the name, the use of XML is not required (JSON is often used instead), and the requests do not need to be asynchronous. AJAX is not a new programming language, but a new way to use existing standards. AJAX is the right way of exchanging data with a server, and updating parts …

How to Avoid Black Friday and STILL Save on Gifts

How to Avoid Black Friday and STILL Save on Gifts

via MoneyNing:

I can’t remember the last time I went shopping on Black Friday. Yet, somehow I always manage to find good deals on quality gifts.

While I do think there are some good deals to be had on Black Friday, I also think it’s overrated. Plus, shopping on Black Friday can lead to a lot of overspending. It’s hard to maintain self-control when your mind is telling you that everything really is a good deal – even when it’s not.

If you’d rather skip the madness of Black Friday, there’s good news: you can still find those bargain gifts. Here’s how.

Make a List

Before you go deal hunting, make a list of everyone you have to buy for, along with a few gift ideas for each person. This way, you won’t be tempted to save money by purchasing someone a bad gift.

Once you have your list and gift ideas, you can get down to business!

Shop Cyber Monday

A great way to avoid the crowds and still score awesome deals is to shop for gifts on Cyber Monday.

Once the Cyber Monday ads start coming out, pull out your gift list and cross-reference it with the ads. See something for sale that matches one of your gift ideas? Make a note.

Check all of the stores that are most likely to have deals on the items you need. Every time you see an awesome deal, write it down. When Cyber Monday rolls around, go to all of the websites that have the deals you want. Quickly add the item to your cart and check out.

Beware of browsing too much. Remember: you’re not saving money if you buy something you don’t need just because it’s a deal.

Shop Locally & Negotiate

If you’re not much of an online shopper, you could help your community by shopping locally. Check with the local merchants in your area to see if they have what you need.

If the merchandise seems to be a little overpriced, ask if there will be any holiday promotions. If you still don’t have any luck, try negotiating.

My family owns a couple of local department stores, and I’m here to tell you people negotiate on just about everything — all the time. Don’t feel embarrassed asking for a lower price; just make sure it’s reasonable. The merchant is much more likely to give you a lower price than let you walk out of the store empty-handed.

Negotiation can do wonders for your holiday gift budget.

Shop at Thrift Stores

If you have little kids to buy for, shopping at thrift stores is the perfect solution. Most young children could care less whether their gift is new or used. All they care about is having something fun to entertain them.

Browse your local thrift shops for gently used items. A lot of times, you can find awesome deals on merchandise that still has the tags on it.

And, if you have family members who enjoy books, a thrift store might be a good place to find gifts for them. Most thrift stores have very gently used books — sometimes, you can’t even tell they’re used.

Forget the holiday madness that comes with Black Friday. If you make a list and check around, you’ll end up saving more money and coming back with better gifts.

Are you shopping on Black Friday? How do you save money on your holiday gifts?
